Response to Compost, caliche dirt and seed planting

Ples,

Caliche soil is a problem here in southern NM so I have dealt with it quiet often. Caliche soil is a sand and calcium carbonate mix that is as hard as fresh concrete and as permeable. It generally forms in pockets of various widths and depths. Planting in an area without caliche is the best solution. If that's not possible, two solutions are available: 1) raised beds, and 2) develop a 'vent' in the caliche.

A vent is a 1 inch, or so, hole placed through the caliche (maybe more will be needed). The hole is necessary to drain the water that would collect around the roots.

If your are not sure about the extent of the caliche, try filling the hole with water and see how fast the water drains out. If it drains within 24 hours, you should be good to go.

A signed copy of my book, "Easy Plant Propagation" is a great gift idea!
