i need advice about lilacs

i live in zone 4, surrounded by zone 3(No. Maine).My lilac, though beautiful, has grown to monsterous preportions, and i would like to .transplant some of the shutes. how do i know when she is dormant, and do i need to alter the dirt where i plant them? Also, can i plant several shutes in one hole? thankyou so much
