Response to Deer shredded maple - can we graft?

Tim,

All I can say is give it a try, but I'm not sure the two are compatible. If you leave the silver maple as is it will develop new growth in the spring. From those new sprouts you can select the tallest, straightest one and train that as the new leader by staking it.

That would probably be my first option.

Field grafting can be done, but a graft union really needs warm temps to heal and graft nicely. So doing a graft outside this time of year may not be succesful.
