Pick up a basic book on machine practice. The flea markets often have piles of old books from the 1940's that will walk you through every step of the machining process. I'm a toolmaker by trade and love collecting these old books.
I personally never liked single pointing threads so I hesitate to offer advice. I've been fortunate enough to always have access to the proper dies or threading head.
