| Around here, we have LAPAW, whence came PawPaw Zeke. They also rescue from Animal Control, and do the PetSmart thing. Our vet works closely with them. That is a one-woman operation, with volunteer help. She got her 501(c)(3) status (government-ese for "official nonprofit") by using a book titled "Nonprofits for Dummies." After Rita, her animal building was okay, but her house was demolished. She had Zeke and 4 other of the neediest dogs in a 25' travel trailer, and was prepared to have it that way for some time. She almost cried when we said we'd take Zeke; she didn't realize what a joy and privilege it was for us. We also have Four Paws on the Bayou, which I believe is a similar operation. Animal Angels is a another organization based in Sulphur, doing good work with cats.
We all know some national organizations that do good work for animal protection, etc. A person might also take a look at the Assistance Dog Institute in Santa Rosa, CA (near you, Maria?). They research and train assistance dogs, therapy dogs, and their trainers--some of those trainers being at-risk youth in juvenile facilities. It was the first place I knew of to try having kids who were poor readers reading to dogs, who can be excellent listeners, etc.
So many good agencies, so few bucks. Maybe I'll let Juno and Earl pick!
