Pain killer found in pet foods

ExperTox, a Texas lab, found acetaminophen (a fifth possible contaminant) in at least five samples of pet food that were submitted by pet owners and pet
manufacturers. The medication was mostly found with cyanuric acid, and hundreds of other samples that were sent in tested positive for melamine. The contaminants were found in pet foods that have not been recalled.

ExperTox said that the highest level of acetaminophen was found in a dog food sample submitted by a pet food manufacturer, but the lab is not identifying the company. The FDA is now investigating the findings from the lab and a FDA spokesperson says that: "what's significant is these things are there. They don't belong there."

Just insane

June 5 2007, 7:21 PM

So many pets had to get sick and or die. It's hard to think of any of these sweeties to my left and right on the forum getting sick. Their faces are all so expressive. They all seem to say, "Just love me and take care of me and I'll be your best friend." Imagine how bad the owners who fed thier pets contaminated food must have felt.

You're not kidding

Talk about guilt.

When I look at my sweet Buddy and know that he counts on us to take care of him, and how would I feel, however unbeknownst to me, if I was responsible for hurting him?

Where will it end?

NAFTA sucks!

June 6 2007, 1:44 AM

Trading with all those countries that would like to ruin us just may bring it about. Try buying something that isn't made in China? I can't even find anything made in the USA any more. I always check labels. However, in pet food, you have no idea where the additives are from. Guess I'll have to find those cat food recipes online.

... (of jobs going south) back in the 1990s in his opposition to NAFTA.

So far this year, I have found one thing imprinted "Made in the USA" - it was a note found inside a Chinese fortune cookie at the Cathay Inn!

On the serious matter of pet food contaminants, we maintain vigilance and a file of information and alerts (many of them thanks to schatze and other members of this forum). We watch our elderly (18) cat, 'Missy' very carefully for any signs of illness and feed her just one kind of dry cat food that she likes (with occasionally some fresh iceberg lettuce to nibble on the side).

That is Kit 'n Kaboodle, which is actually a Purina product. We also give some to our outside colony of TNR'd feral cats in cold weather. So far, so good.

Is anything safe?

June 11 2007, 10:43 PM

I ask only because Finn's almost out of food again, and I am too lazy to ccok for myself half the time, much less for him, too.

The place where JAG and I started working today actually does some melamine/chemical testing on (pet)food additives, so maybe I can pry the information out of one of the techs down the hall...

Beneful has not been on any list

that I've seen. And my babies love the stuff!

Recently both were put on a bland diet due to GI issues, and I cooked a batch of ground turkey and rice for them. It was very well received, to say the least! I added it to the crunchy stuff after a couple of days of feeding that by itself, until it was all used up. I'm sure they will appreciate it if I make another batch over the weekend.

and their website, www.naturapet.com, states that they don't use any foreign source of protein. The daughter of a co-worker works at a doggie health food store and she sent my boy some samples. We'll see how he likes it.

May have been a voluntary recall but I think it was a venison.
