Pet from my Past

Here is a picture of me with my lorikeet, Froot Loop, in 1989. I had her for about 8 years before she passed away. What a character she was! And, such a vocabulary and vocal variety...

Whenever I utter the word "exercise" I will rinse my mouth with chocolate!

What a gorgeous bird

Froot Loop looks like the perfect name for that baby. I have had birds and it's so interesting when they learn to talk. What did she used to say?

She said things like

July 5 2007, 5:00 AM

"I love you" "Good birdie" "Aak aak eek eek tookie tookie" "birdie night night" etc. Her voice changed based on how intent she was on us doing her bidding. She also had a distinct screech when an alien cat entered the back yard and did not stop until we chased the errant puss from her cat's territory. Birds are a lot of work, but very interesting companions.

Whenever I utter the word "exercise" I will rinse my mouth with chocolate!

My favorite childhood pet was Sam

July 5 2007, 11:54 PM

aka Sampson of Carrollton, as his papers read. My grandmother, Mimi (a Renaissance woman for sure), spent some years breeding Cocker Spaniels; she gave Sam to us on my 3rd or 4th birthday -- I still remember first seeing him with a big red bow around his neck on our porch on Leonidas Street (not far from Carrollton Lumber and Wrecking). Sam was a loving, mild-mannered, well-behaved, and intelligent creature who never hurt a fly but did accidentally scratch a friend (she remembers that to this day). Sam's temperament was so easy-going that he wouldn't retaliate after my Easter chick (another favorite pet from my yout) grew into a rooster who would fly and pounce and try to spur Sam. After a couple of attempts, that rooster was carted off to the hinterlands of Metairie when large plots of land were more common than suburbs and shopping strips (but I already told that story at least a few times).
