Meerkat Manor

on Animal Planet. Comes on at 7 and 7:30 Friday nights. It's fascinating to watch these creatures. The show is like a soap opera with each animal having a name, a unique personality, domestic problems, and such. That part of it is all hype but the show is a kick. I think scientists are on-board to verify the validity of what the animals are up to.

I posted this on the What'cha Watchin' a few days ago but realize that our animal lovers here might enjoy the show.

Those fast-talkin' meercats

August 21 2007, 10:50 PM

are such fascinating creatures. And so cute, too! I've never watched an episode all the way through, but I watch snippets from time to time.

I was so taken with the meerkats

August 21 2007, 11:10 PM

that I was compelled to google them. Did'ja know that they are only about a foot and a half tall? And that they weight about a pound and a half? I always thought they were bigger.

Oops, I meant meerKats!

August 21 2007, 11:19 PM

Wasn't logged in so I couldn't correct! No, I didn't know they were so small. For some reason, I thought they were larger, more like a ferret size.

Cayenne gives thumbs up

If he had a thumb that is. He likes them AND Dog Whisperer the bestest. Dog Whisperer gives him dog fights and cute bitches though.

And, as I responded in the TV forum...

August 22 2007, 1:33 PM

... "I guess I can emerge from the closet and confess that I'm a 'Meerkat Manor' fan - it's the only soap opera that bears watching.

One has to root for the Whiskers clan in the occasional battles between the tribes - the noisy, scuffling conflicts are sometines like little furry allegories of relations between Orleans and Jefferson Parishes!"

What's fascinating is the amount of time that the meerkats spend standing up on their hind legs to look around above the savannah grass or whatever it is - as do many other mammalian species, ranging from rabbits and gophers (often) to bears and cats (occasionally).

But, while wonders whether our own very remote ancestors did that, the meerkats are clearly not truly bipedal*: they get back on all fours to scamper about and cover ground, as do all the non-human primates when they're not brachiating (swinging with their forelimbs) between trees.

[* So far as I've observed, only humans and the GEICO lizard are truly and naturally bipedal - able to walk and run on their hind feet; and it's only recently and with very sophisticated robotics that we've managed to get machines to do it.]
