His personal physician, Dr. P. (a.k.a., Aunt Katie)pronounced him heartworm-free, but with a bacterial respiratory infection. She is guessing he picked it up on the street, or in the pound. Pill time is his favorite, since it comes wrapped in a piece of cheese. His dad accidentally moved a chair back and the leg came down on his paw. Boozoo is fine and all is forgiven; his dad should be over the trauma in a few weeks! Dr. P. suggested a possible catahoula connection as well, but hey, she's from Houma originally....
By the same token, our vet advised us not to walk Olive (our new puppy) for another six weeks. He said her immune system needs time to develop. I hadn't heard anything like that before.
You have to wait for them to get all of their shots to take them on public ground. I wonder if taking them to a vet is also a hazard? Lots o' germs there. Keep puppies on your lap there. I think it makes you miss prime time for gettig a puppy to learn to walk and follow you, but them's the rules.
I never heard of Parvo. My first Golden puppy tested positive for Parvo after a full day of , how shall I say this, losing fluids. Parvo is a killer of grown dogs but it's really bad for a puppy. Better safe than sorry when there are other nasties, too. They are also leary of giving too many vaccines at once for puppies. Your vet will do what he wants, but you might want to be aware of spreading them out a bit. Has she had rabies yet? That can wait, I believe. Callie was several months, close to a year before I gave her rabies vaccine. The recent protocols for vaccines have been to give them fewer. Dogs were getting over vaccinated. Is the baby girl chipped? After "K" I think chips good outweighs the bad, but chips can move around. I tell ya, it's like having a kid without the cost of education. If only you could put them on your medical insurance.
That's a good time to do it - when she's under anesthesia. That's in a few months if she's 3 months now. If you are unsure about her age, remember it's best to spay BEFORE she goes into her 1st heat.
Dougan's vet has gone to the three year inoculations where available. Her theory is that he is getting old, and the fewer invasive things we have to put in his corpulent little body, the better off he is. She also fells that especially since he has received all vaccinations promptly for the past 10 years that I have had him, that he probably has some good immunity for all of those diseases already and the three year shot is just fine for someone who is very gray around the muzzle.

"over immunization" of dogs and cats too. I read a lot about it. The life expectancy of domestic animals is declining and it is attributed to over meding. Obviously I am not trained in this field but I tend to believe it. Think of this, all the females that took the HRT touted to be the answer to so many menopausal problems to find years later, it may have caused more problems than it helped. Now they are thinking that child immunizations may be a link to ADD. There are too many unknowns. Hence I will only do the rabies shots as law requires it to be tagged. I wipe Bubby down with a natuaral insect repellent to avoid misquitoes hence heart worm. I know we dont have the severity of that up here as you do. I try to feed him as much table scraps as I can. There is something to be said about the natural way of life.
She tries to avoid all meds that she can but she lives in deer tick areas. She probably uses "natural" repellants. I know she recommends fewer inncoulations and not giving too many at once to puppies if you must give them. I waited till the Palm Sunday rabies shots were given at the school for Callie so she must have been 8 to 10 months old. My friend is also concerned about dog cancers. After the pet food recalls, I think lots of folks started feeding their pets from their own kitchen. I know we've talked about the BARF diet here. Bones and Raw Food.
Boozoo is supposedly a young adult, and whatever he picked up off the street was while he was living there, as he had the cough when they got him from the pound. They innoculated him for kennel cough, but I guess this was something he already had, or was coming down with. Whatever it is, it doesn't seem to be slowing him down much. His dad reports that a fast game of fetch, 3x a day, makes him very happy and content during his time in the house.
Good advice about keeping puppies home and off the floor at the vet's. I always cringe when I see a very new newborn (human)in church, especially during cold season. Presumably, if the baby is being nursed s/he has some immunities from Mama, but it seems to me to be tempting fate.

that you can also carry things home to your dog on your shoes. Trixie had kennel cough that she got at the SPCA. When she started coughing, I brought her to the vet and the vet pushed on Trixie's chest and Trixie coughed. The vet smiled and asked if that was the cough I heard. When I told her it was, she said as coughs go, that's a good one -- very treatable.
I used to regularly take my dog(s) to rescue club events such as dog walks and shows, but once both my beagle mix and my roommate's Schipperke came down with bronchitis after one such event. I still go to the events, but Dougan stays home.
