Reading External ROMs?

by James C

Does anyone know how to read (not execute) a ROM? What I want to do is copy the code from my Script/Plus cartridge to a file, then move it to my emulator on my PC so I can use it on the emulator.

I've found ROM images of Calc/Plus, Jack Attack, and the Scott Adams games, but Script/Plus seems to be the elusive one.... if anyone has already done this, please let me know!

It's possible also in software

by

Well, if the ROM is not autostart, or it's possible to fall back somehow to "normal" mode, it's even possible to read the contents from software on the plus/4 itself (just a small machine code with ROM paging), like for example with the 3-PLUS-1 software.

But if it's autostart and you ccan't get out of it, it can only be done with appropriate hardware tools. A knew once a web site telling you haow to do it, but I don't have that anymore handy. Maybe you could make a search on Google?? (ROM dumping, or so)

Well you've got the right idea

by James C

You are thinking along the same lines that I am. However, the pages I'm finding online are for the C64, not the Plus/4 or C16.

I need to be able to do this with my Plus/4, as obviously the Script/Plus cartridge won't fit in my 128D's cartridge slot.

If you can wait for some days, I'm pretty sure

by

I had the dump of ScriptPlus.
I only have to find the time to search for it in my soft collection.
(Also nobody wrote a SW able to search inside multiple
D64 images )

I know where it ISN'T at....

by James C

Script/Plus is not in any of the 690 D64 images on Lando's site.... I've been through every one of them.

STARLIST from Star Commander website is great for making a text list of D64 archives. It chokes up on invalid directories, though. Once you have a text list of your D64s then you can so a simple text search with your favorite text editor for the file you need (presuming you can remember the filename).

That's how I did the txt listings for Lando.

Clarification of previous post

by James C

I did find a German version of Script/Plus, hacked into a PRG file, version 2.2, in D64 Archives numbers 277B and 285A. One of these two also had documentation that could be printed out. (version 872012)

However, I am looking for the English version as released on cartridge (version 1.13 from March or May of 1984).

I would prefer to have this as a ROM dump so that I can load it as a ROM in Minus/4 for Windows emulator.

Thank you for looking......(text follows)

by James C

Thank you for taking the time to look.

I imagine that if worse comes to worse, I can upgrade my motherboard to work with this #$%@ XE1541 cable I bought a year ago, so that I can write 1541 disks from the D64 images I've downloaded. THEN I can use a real Plus/4 to hack the 2.2 version and re-convert it back to English.

Expensive and a time-consuming process, wouldn't you agree?

There's no way I can do this before the end of the year, so if anyone comes across the original 1.13 release, I would be most grateful.

Thank you again for your help!

You might want to try here. . .

by

Hi,

Try Zsolt Prievara's site, he is the author of the excellent Winemu Plus 4 emulator.

Here is the link

http://winemu.emuunlim.com/

Then just click on the cheats link on the left hand side.

Regards,

Try this...

by Attila

It also depends on which version of Icicle Works you are playing. In case you use the one downloaded from Lando's site then the cheats at Zsolt's site won't work.

Further, if you use my emulator, Yape, you can directly edit the contents of the memory after pressing ALT+M (going into monitor)

Once in the Yape Monitor, you should try these:

Time will not decrease:
>6b0a e9 00

Infinite lives:
>62fb 4c

Make presents out of the ugly wolves:
>704c a2 0e

That's it! Have fun!

Could be cheaper to buy another P4

by Lando

Your fault sounds as if the TED is dead on both machines. Inside the machine there is a large mental case, the chip sat under that I would think at fault.

I`ve had a number of Plus/4 over the years most were dead and all had the same problem. If your lucky just by swapping this chip over with a working one it can sort the problem. Even though they may not work, they may be good for spares.....

Many Good Plus 4s Are Out There!

by

There are LOTS of great Plus-4s out there, especially on Ebay. I've bought three myself, and they are all working.

Here are some tips:
-But from someone who can at least hook the thing up to a TV/monitor to see if it works, don't go for this "Power light comes on" crap!

-Email the seller beforehand and get an idea of what it is you're buying.

-make sure there is a power supply with it! these are harder to get than the Plus 4 itself - although you can probably get one with a cheap ($5) C64 system, too!

Don't give up, it's a great machine

Look for a C16

by James C

Mike,

Look for a C16 in your local pawn shops, thrift stores, rummage sales..... the C16 uses the same processor and graphics chip that the Plus/4 does.

With a blank-screen symptom, the problem could be in either. The processor has to kick in to initialize the system before the graphics chip will know what to display.

Actually...

by Attila

.. it is more likely that the TED chip (MOS7360 or 8360 if I'm right) went wrong. It provides the CPU with clock cycles, so if it is gone, then the CPU won't even have any idea on what to do...

Flossie says "baa".

by

1: I have played complete versions of "Revenge of the Mutant Camels II" and "Ancipital" on the PC, done in Blitz Basic by the Guildhall mob, and they are mighty fine.

2: The "Llamasoft Virtual Machine", an environment intended to allow me to produce updated versions of Llamasoft games, is nigh on complete on both PC and PocketPC platforms.

Keep an eye on http://www.llamasoft.co.uk and as things happen there will be more information there.

Maybe I should do Mac as well. It really doesn't take too much time to add new platforms to the list of supported hardware.

3: I went out in the field this morning, and Flossie said "baa".

Head Over Heels for C16 - wow

by

Hi there!

As I grew up with an C16 AND an Amstrag CPC my favorite games of the eighties were those 3D-isometric action adventures, which were most beautiful on the Amstrad (because of its 16 kb of graphics memory and 27 colors).

But I never knew there was a C16 conversion (ripped from an original C64 release I think) of 'Head Over Heels'.

Anybody interested in action action adventures should take a look at this one - it's a real gem.

To all Plus/4 nutters alike

by Lando

Hi guys,
I sorry I have`nt responded to your messages and some emails you have or may have of sent

My fault, a big site comes at a price that I have to pay for. For the last 2 years my life was Work, Family and PLUS/4 day in day out. All my other intrests got pushed aside, I never washed my car in all this time, and still have`nt Me woman did it once she`s just saying to me now lol.

How it all started:
The way I saw things at the start of this site. Plus/4 emulation was gona die before it even started, as you all know it`s been a hard an long ride, (emulation coders not to blame) but more a fact of the C16/Plus4. Boy did we have a tuff time from day 1, but having said that she was the best and it wont be forgotten. NO SIR, I was shocked with the lack of C16/Plus4 related stuff online, but what people noramlly remember thier old machines by is some game or another they loved.

Of course I was the games man having had 300+++ originals (honest truth). Who was better to make a site all about games? I dought anyone, but because I was new to the web as a browser person it was time to have a play with HTML From that day on I never stopped, all my free time was Plus/4 releated. Yep I loved every moment of it, all the stuff we`ve shared and went through has been MAGIC!!!

Anyways on to the real story, I`m not pulling the plug, it time to take a back seat for a while and get on with other stuff I like doing before I go mad. Christ, since I`ve started the site I`ve seen my own Dreamcast die infront of me before I even turned the bugger on. Well almost like that I got some catchin up 2 do like play Shenmue for longer than an hour coz Shenmue 2 is almost here lol. Also if you take a close look at Luca`s Lone News 13, he not far from the truth. I`m also one of these people he was going on about...... Yep I`m a Ureil that own`s

It`s taken 15 or so years to get this far with the most respected help of many of you and all authors of this class software and it`s not over yet nor is my intrest in Plus/4 So smile, if I`m not updating then I`m here in spirit.

There is so much work 2 do that this is a job for life and not just for Xmas

C ya soon and take care,
Lando

This site, and all the work you've put into it has assured that the +4 will continue on for some years yet, and I am greatful!

I am not an old-time +4 user, although I did use other Commodore machines (from the C-64 to the Amiga 3000). I was always intruiged by the +4, but I never even saw one until I got one earlier this year.

Your site, and the others like it, have provided me with lots of resources that have allowed me to start enjoying this gem!

Okay a lame attempt at help

by James C

I presume you're playing Icicle Works online through the Minus/4 Java that is on this site.

The way it works is that the Java runtime and the game data are downloaded to your machine, and then the game runs.

Therefore a lag or slow responses are most likely due to the machine processor, configuration, RAM available, Windows swap space, or other programs that you might have running at the same time.

I doubt that IE or Netscape would be the cause as long as you are running a fairly recent version (within the last year to 18 months).

Do any other online games from that page run slow (such as Exorcist or Saboteur)? If so, it's in your machine.... if not it could be how the game is written and may not be 100% compatiable with how it's being implemented ..... in which case you may want to download and install an emulator and the game itself on your machine.

- Skelby [cover]

- Gnasher [cover]

- Galaxions [cover]

- Icicle Works [cover]

- Fire Ant [cover]

- Exorcist [cover]

- Crazy Golf [cover]

- Solo [cover]

- Leaper [cover]

If you want this stuff lemme know how to send it to you (format, pic size, email address, etc.)

1531 datassette cleanup question

by

I received a 1531 datassette (just after I FINALLY got that 26 games pack from Comtique... will post titles later if anybody's interested), and it's got a slight problem: the Play mechanism gets jammed. I suppose this is because it's bloody dirty, I opened it up and it's a bit grubbt, but if you push it back to its place, its OK.. so it surely needs a cleanup and proper lubrication.

Any tips about how to get this baby rolling?

Cartridges in question

EasyCalc 264 was released as Calc/Plus
SuperScript was released as Script/Plus
MagicDesk II was not released by Commodore. Status of software at time of discontiuation of project unknown. (This means that I don't know if the software was ever written, let alone ready to release before Commodore decided not to release it.)

I have a ROM image of Calc/Plus but am trying to find one of Script/Plus so I can submit both at the same time. If I don't have any luck within another week or so remind me and I'll post Calc/Plus.
