Saw a great little MO Hockey/TotalHockey commercial while watching the San Jose-Anaheim game on VS Thursday night. I thought that was pretty good idea. Did they do that during the Blues game, because I didn't notice it until tonight?

Flawed marketing strategy.

You advertise during a versus non-st.louis hockey game.
Who is the primary/only audience of a non-Blues game? Hockey fanatics.
They don't need to be drawn into hockey, they are already there.

You need to grab youth early.
I am a great example. I can't skate and previous watched 1 out of 10 Blues games.
However, my son started with learn to skate at 4 years old and he's now hockey obsessed.
Obviously, posting here means I'm hockey obsessed.

If you want to expand hockey these are my 2 simple baby steps or suggestions.
1) Draw kids at a young age 3-4 like T-ball or soccer Learn to skate and LTP are key
Not every kid will become obsessed. But, those who do expand the base.
2) Find a cheaper way to get kids started. When I tell parents my son plays hockey their first quote is:
"Isn't that really expensive."

Marketing 101 - who is your target markets and what does it take to motivate them to action.

Maybe Total Hockey should advertise during Soap Operas in the afternoon? After all they are looking for future crazed hockey moms to shop at their store.

They probably got a hold of the spot during that game as part of a cheap media buy that was opened up to the local market. They knew there wasn't going to be a ton of people from the STL market watching but the price was right.

Its a big leap to get people off their couch and take their kids to the rink

I don't know how you can make it much cheaper, I think Affton does their LTP for $75 and gives out the equipment for a deposit check. I beleive another organization has it for less then that. At least they have started doing something. Maybe if they could work something out to air during the Cards game that would hit another demographic.
