So the opening weekend is almost over and the southwest conference is a wopping 1-8... was it a bad weekend or should they not be considered to be the 2nd best conference in midstates anymore?

Not much you can tell from this weekends games as all the Midget Minor and Bantam Major AAA and CSDHL kids out of town at Nike/Bauer tournament.

How can you tell? Webster never finishes their roster on MidStates with jersey numbers. One of the few teams that don't bother. Guess that way you can't tell who their goal scorers are. Should be required. Maybe someone will post their numbers here.

Point is, each team must roster the players at their game by name. Webster and every other team does that. If players are showing up on that roster that are not on their bench, there is a problem.

Coaches almost always list all players on the roster. Actually it is the score keepers responsibility to see who actually touches the ice during a game. He should check their names off as they get into the game and scratch any player that is on the roster but doesn't play.

You can roster 20 players and have them all dress and it only counts if you actually touch the ice during the game. If you ride the bench the entire game it does NOT count as a game played.

Actually very little of what you said is correct. You were correct that a coach can roster a maximum of twenty players for a midstates game. The score keeper has no responsibility to see who actually plays except for the goalie as shots and saves are recorded for the goalie. As an example of that, most teams dress two goalies even though only one will play in the game. BOTH goalies will be listed on the roster even though only one touches the ice during the game.

The coach gives the score keeper a list of the 20 players who will be rostered for the game. The scorekeeper will put those twenty on the score sheet. There is absolutely no relevance given to who "touches the ice" except for the shots and saves are recorded for the playing goal keeper. Also any penalties, goals or assists are placed on the score sheet.

After the game, the refs, score keeper and both coaches sign the score sheet to verify that the information listed on it is correct. That information of course includes verifying by the coaches that those 20 players were indeed the 20 that were dressed for the game.

9:01 you obviously are NOT familiar with the process. The score keeper is an off ice official and IS absolutely responsible to keep track of who participates. The coaches signatue only means that he recieved a copy of the score sheet.....that is it!!! It is the referee and off ice officials responsibility to fill out the score sheet and scratch names. The coach can point out any errors but the referee must approve.

The "relevance" of who touches the ice determines a players eligability to participate in the playoffs. You should try actually reading the rules.

A player plays in the game if he dresses and takes warm-ups. There is no correlation to actually playing during the game whatsover. In fact, teams have, and should, dress kids who are rehabilitating from an injury and in some instances I have seen AAA or CS players come and take warm-ups and then leave after war-ups conclude.

Whether or not a player participates in the play of the game does not matter. Many players who are Freshmen or Sophmores do not play but will be eligible for the playoffs. Anybody who says different is either lying or ignorant of the facts.

You have to dress for half the games.

NO - A kid doesn't even have to be at the rink to be one of the 20 on the "player list" that is submitted to the score keeper. You can have 25 on a roster, this simply means you are on the team.

NO - A player must "play in" 10 regular season games

It is the score keeper and referees responsibility

All the scorekeeper does it verify that the number of players listed matches the number on the roster sheet submitted by the coach/team. During warm-ups the scorekeeper is to verify that those listed are on the ice. After that the player is counted as having played in that game.

IN NO WAY does anybody keep track of whether or not he took a shift.

My son is in one of the better programs, there have been several games per year that kids do not actually get any ice time in the game yet still show up on the score sheet.

The rules say the coach gives a neatly printed or typed roster to both the opposite coach and the score keeper.

i guarantee you the ref does not scratch names off a score sheet after a game. he checks that coaches have signed, who by the way has the responsibility of scratching off names, and player and team total penalties.

What a bunch of whiners! Enough already. IF the kids are on the bench and don't hit the ice, then you should have nothing to worry about. They didn't hurt your chances of winning that game and most likely won't hurt you in any games in the future.

You have it all wrong, people use the excuse well we were missing our best players and yet you look at the score sheet and see them on the roster.

The coach DOES NOT have any responsibility what so ever when it comes to the score sheet except to sign it, indicating that he received a copy. That was pointed out earlier with the exact rule reference. The coach submits a "player list" to the scorekeeper not a roster two entirely different things. It is the scorekeepters responsibility to give the opposing coaches a copy of the other teams "player list".

It is the scorekeepers responsibility. The referee is ultimately responsible to make sure it is filled out properly, but agree he himself will not scratch a name. Coaches know this is not handled properly and will list all players on the player list hoping they don't get scratched off.... it a catch me if you can system.

I think there may be some confusion because a roster and player list are being used interchangeably.


In previous rules the varsity roster may contain up to 30 players and must be submitted to mid states at least 7 days before the first scheduled league game.

So each mid states roster may contain up to 30 players, of those 30 players the head coach will submit the 20 man player list before each game and that roster can change as long as those 20 players are contained within those 30 players.

Then for each game, there must be a player list of a maximum of 20 players submitted at least five minutes before game time. Actually two copies, one the score keeper hangs on to and the other he/she gives to the other coach.

That really wasn't the point, they are not lying. The point is they don't get scratched even though they were not there. Because missing players are often not scratched. That is why the coaches will always list everyone in hopes it gets missed and the game counts toward their total so those players who might otherwise be on the border of missing the playoffs are now eligable.

Did Midstates release the names of the players that were to serve suspensions from the end of last season? I recall the Founders cup ending in fights with several suspended. Did they serve their suspensions? If not they would be required to forfeit any games those players/coaches participated in without serving their suspensions.

Actually, coach turns in the game roster of up to twenty names. We list all twenty names, even if players are missing. When the game is over, we scratch any who did not make the game. We have players coming from other practices who may miss warm up but participate in the game or just sit on the bench. Even though they arrived late they would be considered as having dressed for the game, whether or not they particpated in the game, as long as they make it to the rink, to the bench, dressed out, before the game is over. If they arrive late and you haven't listed them, you have to take a penalty to add them to the score sheet. So list, then scratch if they don't make it. That is how we do it. The varsity scorekeepers do try to check off whether or not the players listed are actually on the bench. Some are better than others at noting no shows.

FHC was missing 4 of their top 6 forwards. This happens when HS conflicts with the select teams. FHC doesn't have the depth to replace the missing forwards.

If you guys really must know the Seckman coach called up the CBC coach and requested that they play each other. CBC was doing it as a favor because both coaches go back. The only reason CBC ran the score up was so they could leave early due to the mercy rule. Don't you think that Seckmand knew they were going to get killed they did it for the experience.

Ok, people who don't know anything about Midstates rules, here you go, each team must play a certain amount of "out of district" games. CBC has a hard time scheduling these games for obvious reasons. There are no favors being done and these are not practice games, they are included in the rankings done by the seeding commitee. Strength of schedule is one of the determining factors used when giving teams a seed for the Challange/Wick/Founders cup at the end of the season. I bet you all care more about the results of this game than either team or coach.
