An unannounced surprise was in store for fans of Scottish tribute band THE COMPLETE STONE ROSES & of course THE STONE ROSES when they played at Dublin "Olympia Theatre" last November.
From the side of the stage, out steps a legend, to the absolute delight of the audience. Former STONE ROSES bassist "MANI" who now plays for legendary Glasgow band PRIMAL SCREAM and who also acts as the bands tour support DJ whenever he can, struts up on stage, makes his way to the tribute bands bassist, promptly takes the "Jackson pollocked" replica bass from him and announces to the audience that he is going to play one of the Stone Roses greatest hits "She Bangs The Drums". As one can imagine, the crowd, once they realised what was happening went absolutely berserk just as the "legend in their eyes", Mani, starts the famous bass line so familiar to this entire gobsmacked audience. The place erupts into cheers and yelling, the throng of people sways from side to side jumping up and down, rocking to the tunes of their heroes played by one of their heroes. From the side of the stage the band manager observes some strange goings on, girls screaming the names of their heroes to the tribute bands members "RENI, RENI, JOHN, JOHN, some of them not even old enough to have went to an original band gig but who are swept up in the excitement of the event, 2 guys, totally oblivious to the person watching them hug each other with sheer excitement and proceed to jump up and down as if their team has just won the world cup, mind you their are some who would argue that this, in fact, was better than any world cup. (You can see today's glamour football tournament every 4 years but you may only see this once or twice? in your lifetime). There are others just standing watching in total disbelief with a smile the size of the Irish sea whilst the massive majority go nuts roundabout them and yet who also seem to carry the shocked with them through a highly charged electric buzz that is sweeping the venue like a "last band of the night" festival vibe. Whilst all the adrenalin rushes right into the audience, the band too have their problems, here they are in one of the most renowned venues in Ireland, on stage playing tribute to the Stone Roses and actually playing with one of the STONE ROSES members. As this was a completely unrehearsed spur of the moment action, the band were probably just as gob smacked as the audience, never could they have imagined that they would get the ultimate compliment for what they do, by having an original member want to actually play the set with them on stage, there have always been tribute bands who have managed to get at least one of their heroes out to see them, maybe if just out of curiosity, but there are very few who can make the same claim as THE COMPLETE STONE ROSES By the end of the song, the entire place in thanks to what they have just seen burst into a chorus of MANI, MANI, MANI, MANI, MANI waving their hands in the now famous "we are not worthy manner" made famous by cult film "Wayne's world"
