Response to I little help

Ok, the basics then..

First of all go here.

http://www.help4newbies.fsnet.co.uk/outlook_guide.htm

Read it.
Read it again.
Go away and have a drink.
Read it again.
Print it out, take it to bed and read it.

Set up newsgroups in Outlook Express ( or whatever news reader you have ) and have a play.
Don't post anywhere, just read..Susbscribe ( all free..) to groups..Unsubscribe..Delete..subscribe to others..
Generally get a feel of " Usenet "

When you're happy with OE and Newsgroups.....

....Dump Outlook Express..Or at least don't use it for binaries.

OE is great for text posts ( much like these were doing now, but C R A P for binaries..)

Get X-News..I'll mail it you if ya like..S'only small, but you can download it..Do a search, it's free.

( At this point, it's worth pointing out that OE is fine for learning how to use binaries..For example, a large binary file will contin many, many files..just try downloading one, and see how it works..)

In X-News, you get a newsgroup list, like you do in OE.
( You should already be familiar with this by this stage..)
Choose the newsgroup you want (or input it ) then let it download all
the headers.

Find the article(s) you want, highlight them, press space bar to queue
them, then F4 to decode them.
You'll be asked where you want to save to, default is X-News's folder.

When it's done it's thing, you'll have a series of decoded files in your
downloads folder..
They might be a singular file, maybe an AVI or MP3, or they might be a
bunch of files, maybe a series of MP3's or a series of RAR files...(
Much like a ZIP file )

You'll need WinRar too, ( I could email you this too..Again, only
small, downloadable if you search, and free..)) as most binaries are compressed using this..Some are done with
Yenc, but X-News can handle this too.

Worth pointing out, a 56k dial up connection will take about 3 1/2 years
to download an AVI the size of video's.

56k is slow, but do-able for the MP3's though.

Try having a read here for some tips.

You mention you want to go to the newsgroup I put gigs on...There isn't a sspecific one yet, and my posts are few and far between.
Plans are afoot for a Stone Roses binary group..That's where I will post, if it materialises.

FTP is my way of doing things..I would suggest that way for you, but really, Usenet ( newsgroups ) is something everyone should use..Usenet is a great place to be, and never, ever quiet.

There are a handful of message boards we all post on.

There are thousands and thousands of newsgroups, and more are created every single week.

Hope that helps..!

No go read..!!

Mick.
