Dear Gunny G,

I am seeking information and copies of photographs that any
Marines may
have of the late CWO Charles Ream Jackson. I am in the process
of
putting together his biography, which Random House Inc., will
publish in
2002.

As a Marine Corps historian (I have written 6 books about
Marines), I
want to do the best job possible in describing Jackson before
his
assignment as SgtMaj of 2d Battalion, Fourth Marines, before he
was
taken prisoner in 1942, and after his return to the States. (The
last
keeper of SooChow.)

I know that Jackson came from Petersburg, VA; he and his brother
attened
VMI and, later, the Military Academy at West Point, Class of
1919.
Jackson served for nearly 8 years as an Army officer before he
resigned
his commission and enlisted in the Marine Corps. I would like to
learn
why he resigned his commission? After he enlisted he served in
Haiti,
Nicaragua, Cuba, China, the PI, and on the West Coast, before
joining
the 4th Marines in Shanghai, in 1940. He retired as a CWO-4, and
later
took his own life, in 1971. Before he died he had written about
his
experiences as a POW. These short stories are the focal point of
the
book. It will be titled; I AM ALIVE!
I hope that you and fellow men of the 4th Marines can assist me
in
painting a clear picture of just who C. R. Jackson was. Pass the
word at
the 4th Marine reunuion in San Diego, May 10-12 of this year!
Thank you very much for your assistance with this project.
Semper Fidelis,

Maj. B. H. "Doc" Norton, USMC, (Ret.)
