On this date, March 15, in the year...
1848: Marines and seamen from the U.S. sloop Dale,
again, landed and captured the town of Cochon, Mexico.
1889: Marines were serving aboard the USS Trenton and
the USS Vandalia when they were lost in a typhoon while
in the harbor of Apia, Samoa.
1919: The First Marine Aeronautic Company returned from
the Azores in March, 1919, arriving at the Marine
flying field, Miami, Florida, on March 15.
1943: In the Pacific, the 1st Marine Raider Regiment
was organized for operations on Dragons Peninsula, New
Georgia.
(15-17 Mar): The 10th Defense Battalion relieved the
11th Defense Battalion.
1944: In the Pacific, Admiral Halsey, ComSoPac,
approved the operational plans for the seizure of
Hollandis; Brigadier General Alfred H. Noble, assistant
Division Commander, 3rd Marine Division, was directed
to command the landing force.
In the Solomons, Major General Hubert R. Harmon,
USA, relieved Major General Ralph J. Mitchell as
Commander, Aircraft, Solomons.
Marine medium bombers struck Japanese positions at
Rabaul.
1945 (15-18 Mar): In the Philippines, Marine Fighter
Squadrons 115, 211, 218, and 313, from Marine Aircraft
Group 12, flew onto Moret Field, Mindanao, from Leyte.
They were the first air units to arrive at the new
Marine air base.
1946: In the Palaus, the 26th Marines on Peleliu was
disbanded and the Marine Detachment (Provisional),
Peleliu, became the island garrison force.
1961: The 3rd MAW at El Toro received two new GV-1
Hercules prop-jet propelled aerial tankers manufactured
by Lockheed.
1968 (15-22 Mar): In Vietnam, a comparative lull in
ground fighting became apparent during this week
throughout most of South Vietnam. Enemy forces were
supposedly regrouping after suffering severe losses
during the Tet offensive.
1969: The percentage of high school graduates among
Marine Corps volunteers reached 55.4 percent, while
among inductees it was 71.5 percent. College graduates
among enlisted men numbered 1,071.
