On this date, May 2, in the year...
1781: Marines participated in the capture of the
British brig Adventure and a snow by the Alliance in
the Atlantic Ocean.
1799: A Paymaster was added to the Headquarters staff
of the Marine Corps.
1842: Marines and seamen from McLaughlin's Florida
Squadron made an expedition into the Everglades.
1896: Marines and seamen from the USS Alert landed at
Corinto, Nicaragua, to protect American lives and
property during a period of political disturbance.
1927: The 6th Marine Regiment (-), commanded by Colonel
Harold C. Snyder, arrived at Shanghai, China, on the
USS Henderson, to be joined with the 4th Regiment to
form the 3rd Marine Brigade.
1942: On Midway, CinCPac conferred with the senior
Marine officer on the island and directed him to submit
a detailed list of all supplies and equipment need to
defend the atoll against a strong attack.
1944: In the Bismarcks, Marine Fighter Squadron 115,
the first squadron of the Marine Aircraft Group 12
garrison on Emirau Island, St. Matthias Islands,
arrived and flew its initial combat air patrol.
1945: On Okinawa, the 27th Division, USA, officially
passed to Island Command control. The 165th Infantry,
USA, was assigned responsibility for the 1st Marine
Division sector, and the 105th and 106th Infantries,
USA, were sent north to relieve the 6th Marine Division
on Motobu Peninsula and in the areas farther north.
In Europe, Berlin fell, and German forces in Italy
surrendered.
1946: Marines helped quell a prison riot at Alcatraz
Island, California.
1967: President Lyndon B. Johnson posthumously awarded
Staff Sergeant Peter S. Connor the Medal of Honor for
action in Vietnam in February 1966.
Marines succeeded in taking Hill 881 from North
Vietnamese forces. This prevented the Communists from
using the high ground for an attack on Khe Sanh.
