MILINET: The Spousal Support Act

Tony,

I'm wondering if any of our brethren are in the same boat
with me. I
retired from the service, and a number of years later was
divorced from my
wife of 18 years, 12 of which were while I was on active duty.
As a product
of the Spousal Support Act of a number of years ago, I am paying
a percentage
of my retirement to her as ordered by the Courts. Fine.

Less than a year later, she remarries, and I continue
paying....... The
point is, there isn't ONE State in the Union that requires a
spouse to
continue "alimony" after the other remarries, except for the
Government! The
House of Representatives, under Rep. Bob Salmon, drafted H.R.
71, which would
address this "oversight", as they referred to this problem, but
the major
problem is that the bill languishes in committee due to the lack
of pressure
by those of us in this situation.

What we need to do is establish a class-action suit to force
the Congress
to act on this bill. Why should any of us, being paid soooooo
well on our
retirements, be subjected to this anomaly of justice. In my
case, the
ex-wife is married to a GS-15, and with her income evident to a
GS-12, they
earn in excess of $100,000 a year, and she needs my paltry 500
bucks a
month!!!

I have written to Rep. Salmon, drafter of the bill, and he
said the
Membership of the House hasn't been pushed hard enough to move
the bill to
the top of the stack. So, I'm open to suggestions as to how to
proceed.
Also, how many are in my situation......

Thanks for the forum.
