Feds Reading Your E-Mail?

No score for this post
August 18 2000, 1:21 AM

The Feds (and many State-level investigative agencies) can read your E-mail, just as they can read your regular mail if they get a court order or, in some states, a search warrant. In some instances, they don't read your mail---they do what is called a mail cover, i.e., pursuant to a court order, the Postal Service provides a description (including postmarks and return addressees) of any mail received. Have done many "mail covers" myself while working as an investigator but always had to go to Federal Court and convince a Federal Judge that a crime was being committed and the commission was being furthered or aided by using the mails.
