James Webb, former Navy secretary in the Reagan
administration,
author of five novels and the brains behind the film
"Rules of
Engagement," is off to Hollywood again, this time for
a television
pilot to be called "The Pentagon."
Speaking at a Nov. 15 conference in Arlington, VA,
Webb announced his
involvement with the new TV series, which is slated to
air on CBS.
Webb -- no relation to Jack Webb of "Dragnet" fame --
has been tapped
to write the script for the pilot, although CBS has
yet to purchase
the former Navy secretary's work, a CBS source told
ACR this week.
"The Pentagon" will be a drama set in the Office of
the Secretary of
Defense, Webb said. Story lines will focus on seven
workers inside
OSD.
The idea for a program set in the Pentagon came from
Ron Howard's Imagine TV.
Webb scoffed at the idea that the show will be
patterned after NBC's
popular "The West Wing," a fictional account of life
inside the White
House. The former Reagan official derided the NBC
drama for being too
liberal.
Though fictional, "The Pentagon" could give the
general public a
better idea about what goes on behind the scenes at
OSD, Webb said.
No word yet if outgoing Defense Secretary William
Cohen has signed on
as a consultant.
