Can any Marines tell me why Service Stipes were called Hash Marks? I figure if the answer is out there, it will be found here. Been awhile since I was here GyG. Got you bookmarked again and will visit often.

Gunny, I was in the Corps from '47 to '52. I ended up with one hash mark. I believe the name relates back to an old English word where 'hash" meant to cut on an angel. I could be mistaken. However, if you ever find the true answer, please let me know.
