I had a couple of office hours when I was in. I never recieved a good conduct medal. I was in for a 4 year hitch. Someone told me that because I have an honorable discharge I rate a good conduct medal. Is that true? On my DD 214 it say's,"Good Conduct Medal period commences 850520". I entered active duty 830119. My seperation date was 870118. I thought that you had to at least have 3 years with no trouble to rate a medal. Are they now giving one with an honorable? do I rate? Also who knows what the FMF medal is awarded for?

Let me know if you get any answers to your medal questions.I think you need to write St. Louis but I don't know that address. Someone reading this site will,I'm sure. I recently found out that those serving one 4 year hitch, about the time I did,got shut out on about5-7 ribbons. Some were issued just before & just after that 4 years. For the same things we did. The most important thing to know though,is that we earned & wore our Marine Corps Emblem. That Emblem can never be taken away from any of us!

After researching,it looks like 1 came only weeks before:OCCUPATION FORCES;1 just afterward:CHINA SERVICE;a 3rd one just before AND just after:NATIONAL DEFENSE.Later but before your enlistment era, up to 4 others.

The Good Conduct Medal is issued for
3 consecutive years of Good Conduct. You
stated that you had a couple of Office
Hours. The last one must have been on
850520 (20May1985). That means that your
Good Conduct period commenced on that date.
Had you stayed in and stayed out of trouble
then you would have received a Good Conduct
Medal on 880520; in other words 3 years
from the date of your last NJP. Hope this
answers your question. You have to have
3 straight years of Good Conduct to receive
the medal.
