OK, MIRREN IS THE GREAT FAVORITE FOR THE GOLDEN GLOBE AND THE OSCAR, BUT NOBODY CAN´T TELL US THAT PENELOPE CRUZ ISN´T A GREAT RIVAL FOR MIRREN.
IF HELEN MIRREN IS THE MORE REWARDED ACTRESS OF THE YEAR, PENELOPE CRUZ IS THE SECOND.
FOR ME THE STONG POINT OF PENELOPE CRUZ IS THAT BEFORE VOLVER VERY MANY PEOPLE THINKS SHE WAS A BAD ACTRESS, ONLY A PRETTY FACE, AND SUDDENLY AFTER VOLVER...... SHE HAVE THE CRITICS CRAZY FOR HER.
IN MY OPINION MIRREN IS INCREDIBLE IN THE QUEEN BUT THE HAIR STYLE AND MAKE-UP HELP HER TO CREATE THE ROLE, BUT PENELOPE CRUZ IN VOLVER IS GORGEOUS AND HER PERFORMANCE REMOVE YOUR HEART.
AND YOU NEVER KNOW................... IN HOLLYWOOD CAN WOULD HAPPEN ANYTHING.

I agree that Penélope Cruz is great in "Volver", but if you are a Cruz fan, don't set up useless expectations: Helen Mirren is going to win the 2006 Best Actress Academy Award, and that's just what will happen. Ain't no possible surprise. Helen Mirren is an acclaimed actress, she had two other nominations in the past, and her extraordinary performance is totally award-baity. She got wonderful reviews from every critic in the whole planet, she has won every single award she was in competition for, and she plays a marvellous biographical role (Queen Elizabeth II) in a film built all around her character. Plus, "The Queen" has received a lot of raves from both critics and audience, has won several critics awards for Best Picture or Best Director until now, will probably get the Academy Award nominations in these categories, and has brought 4.5 million people in the theatres in the US only (and 8.5 million worldwide), with an international gross of $ 56 million dollars. The Academy Award for Helen Mirren is a 100% sure thing. No hope for Penélope Cruz this year (and a Best Cast Award at Cannes Film Festival is not enough). This is my prediction-list of the most voted actresses at the next Academy Awards:
1. Helen Mirren, The Queen
2. Kate Winslet, Little Children
3. Judi Dench, Notes on a Scandal
4. Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada
5. Penélope Cruz, Volver
