Unless they cut the role down, HBC and Natalie Portman will be leading if they are loyal to their respective source material.

There is no need for HBC to go supporting. She doesn't need to be bumped down to make room for a bigger star (I'm looking at you Velma and Effie) there is Johnny Depp but he has a penis and won't be in her way for lead.

Jennifer Jason Leigh is a big contender too

No score for this post
June 25 2007, 7:42 PM

Jennifer Jason Leigh will definitely be a big contender for Margot at the Wedding. She looks great in the trailer and has been raved in a test screening review on Aint It Cool, so she should probably be on everyone's predix from now on. My guesses as of June:

Romola Garai - ATONEMENT
Jennifer Jason Leigh - MARGOT AT THE WEDDING
Samantha Morton - THE GOLDEN AGE
Cate Blanchett - I'M NOT THERE
Mira Sorvino - RESERVATION ROAD

Agree that Jennifer Jason Leigh looks like a very strong contender now because of the trailer and advance screening review. She's also crazy-overdue for her first nomination, and she's the kind of dark horse who could sneak in out of nowhere and win on her first nod.

1. Jennifer Jason Leigh - MARGOT AT THE WEDDING
2. Romola Garai - ATONEMENT
3. Helena Bonham Carter - SWEENEY TODD
4. Evan Rachel Wood - IN BLOOM
5. Saoirse Ronan - ATONEMENT

Mine stands as :

Romola Garai - Atonement (just saw the movie and she is BRILLIANT in it)
Abbie Cornish - The Golden Age
Jennifer Jason Leigh - Margot and the Wedding
Evan Rachel Wood - King of California/In Bloom
Naomi Watts - Eastern Promises

Atonement is great and James McAvoy is a show in for a nomination and so is Romola. Keira seems more difficult has she has just about 30 minutes on screen and is pretty much overshadowed by either James or Saorise and Romola.

How about Kidman ?

How about Kidman in The Golden Compass ? It's a big film, her character is rich, multy-layered, she plays a villain, and she seems to steal the show based on the five minutes footage that was shown at Comic-Con. Word of mouth from people who have watched some scenes from the movie is also very good. Basically everyone says it's great casting and she's sure to attract new fans.

Jennifer Jason Leigh - Margot at thw Wedding
Jennifer Connelly - Reservation Road
Romola Garai - Atonement
Saoirse Ronan - Atonement
Evan Rachel Wood - In Bloom

Alternates: Susan Sarandon ( just heard her screen time is very little ), Abbie Cornish, Samantha Morton ( same as Sarandon, her role nothing short of a cameo), Catalina Sandino Moreno.

How do you figure she is a show in for an Oscar nod? Her current chances right now are a bit iffy due to the fact that she had to SHARE a role with with a few other actresses. Keira had maybe only 30 or 40 minutes of screen time but that's irrelevant because she's still the leading lady. Romola as good as she was had to share the role with other actresses who are considered far more superior by the reviewers. Not to mention Romola's chances according to quite a few people as of now are up in the air. If anything Keira has a MUCh better chance due to all the good reviews that surround her and the buzz she is getting that's not even a FRACTION to Romola's.

I think Danes is considered lead.

Not that it matters, because she and the film blew chunks all over the world.

I REALLY hope Nothing Is Private is released in time, so that Collette has a chance. She won't for Evening, sadly, even though she was one of the few bright spots.

Anyways....

Jennifer Jason Leigh, Margot at the Wedding
Kelly MacDonald, No Country for Old Men
Saiorse Ronan, Atonement
Susan Sarandon, In the Valley of Elah
Evan Rachel Wood, In Bloom

Alternates:
Abbie Cornish, Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton
Sigourney Weaver, The TV Set

Circa May-June:

Toni Collette, Nothing Is Private
Jennifer Jason Leigh, Margot at the Wedding
Vanessa Redgrave, Atonement
Michelle Williams, Synecdoche, New York (but it'd never be finished in time)
Evan Rachel Wood, In Bloom

Cate Blanchett- I'm Not There
Nicole Kidman- The Golden Compass
Jennifer Jason Leigh- Margot at the Wedding
Julia Roberts- Charlie Wilson's War
Saoirse Ronan- Atonement

Reasoning:
Blanchett and Leigh have earned plenty of buzz and are leading the pack. Leigh is seen as overdue for a nomination while Blanchett is having one of the best years in her career. Nicole Kidman should earn a nomination for the ever popular villain role especially if The Golden Compass earns a best picture nomination. Saoirse Ronan has earned raves from Cannes and should follow in the tradition of youngsters earning a nomination in this catergory. Finally Julia Roberts should earn a nomination while riding the Charlie Wilson's War wave.

I'm probably CRAZY for saying this, but I'll say it anyway. Susan Sarandon has a shot at a nomination. Her first would be to ride the Amy Adams wave (if there is one) and be nominated for Queen Narissa in Enchanted. Another possibility, one that I think is a further shot than Enchanted would be a nomination for Joan Deerfield in In the Valley of Elah.

I've seen "Enchanted" and while she is enjoyable, I think the Academy would really have to fall head over heels (and then some) in love with it for Susan Sarandon to get a nomination. She only has something like ten minutes of decent screen time. The rest is just her voicing the character.

I'm also thinking that Lisa Kudrow deserves a nomination. I'm sure that Kabluey could be her vehicle but it need to be release of course. P.S., I love you...I'm really hoping this movie to become a hit. I saw the trailer and Lisa was the best, hilarious. If she's a scene stealer I think she could sneak in such a weak race as the supporting actress. Go Lisa!

Cate Blanchett - I'm Not There*
Saoirse Ronan - Atonement
Amy Ryan - Gone Baby Gone
Jennifer Jason Lee - Margot at the Wedding
Marisa Tomei - Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

Blanchett has this one, sorry everyone. she received an Indie Spirit nod, which she will probably win, so she's a lock at this point. Ronan has a lot of love, as does her film so her chances are extremely good. Amy Ryan has a very solid chance as this is the type of breakthrough nod that is common, also when she was on Jay Leno, he said to her "..come back when you get the nomination.." which makes feel like this is a done deal. JJL's buzz has been fading up until her Indie Spirit nod, he chances of winning this Oscar are gone, but her nomination is very likely. As for Marisa Tomei, her buzz, also the fact that i think the Academy will be looking to nominate this film as much as possible, along with her Indie Spirit nod for this could get her into the top 5 easily

ALTERNATES

Tilda Swinton - Michael Clayton
the buzz is there and she is an underrated actress, but i'm waiting for a serioud precursor nod first

Romola Garai - Atonement
i'm getting some double-nod vibes from this film (like Babel, Chicago) but time will tell

Ruby Dee - American Gangster
her chances are better than u might think, expecially if Russel Crowe gets some love

Just because it would be so cool to have three actresses nominated for playing the same character...

1. Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) Winner
2. Romola Garai (Atonement)
3. Vanessa Redgrave (Atonement)
4. Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton)
5. Cate Blanchett (I'm Not There)

And Cate better stick to Supporting Actress for I'm Not There.

Vanessa Redgrave deserves the Oscar

I just saw Atonement and I think she was the best out of the three who played Briony. The other two were also very very good, but Redgrave provides, what I believe, the best and most heart-breaking scene in the whole movie. She brings understanding to the character that I didn't get from the other two.

Amy Ryan - Gone Baby Gone
This critical darling has just become the frontrunner while landing some key precursers (yay!).

Cate Blanchett - I'm Not There
It's a role that's pretty difficult to forget. The voters won't either.

Tilda Swinton
She's been riding the wave of buzz for a while now, and with her perfect trifecta of nods (BFCA, Golden Globe, SAG), I think she'll make the cut.

Catherine Keener - Into the Wild
I actually don't get why she's showing up, but a BFCA and SAG nod speak very loudly about her chances.

Ruby Dee - American Gangster
I had a feeling, once I saw the film, that she had a possiblilty of getting nominated. Her SAG nod just provided evidence for this feeling.

Possible Upset:
Saorise Ronan - Atonement
I actually think this race is pretty locked up and has no room for surprises. But if there were to be one, I think it would be from her. She's young talent, and that is always a positive. I really don't expect her name to be called, but if it had to happen, I would only be mildly surprised.
