I expect (and hope) that more buzz will appear on this site about Marion Cotillard's magnificent performance as Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose. Here are my Best Actress predictions at this point in the year so far:
Marion Cotillard - La Vie En Rose
Meryl Streep - Lions For Lambs
Vanessa Redgrave - Evening

Catherine Keener has it this year...I think playing an ugly role will impress the Academy (Charlize can win for playing a serial killer, right?)
-Catherine Keener in "An American Crime" (I read the "whole story" on Wikipedia; it's crazy.)
-Laura Linney in "The Savages" (My favorite actress...she is SO overdue for an award so I'd love to see her win too.)
-Meryl Streep in "Lions for Lambs" (They can't resist.)
-Halle Berry in "Things We Lost in the Fire" (They'll respect her return to form.)
-Cate Blanchett in "The Golden Age" (It'll be hard, but her performance in Elizabeth was amazing.)
I also wouldn't be surprised to see Julie Christie nominated for "Away from Her".
I think Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johannson will either disappoint, or if they pull it off, will cancel each other out--or only manage Supporting Actress nods. And we've seen that "Evening" doesn't stand a chance (like the new story on here says, it may stand a chance at the Globes (we saw Annette Bening nominated for "Running with Scissors" when it was panned)).
La Vie En Rose isn't necessarily an appealing film to me but I can certainly appreciate a great acting performance so I am interested to see Marion Cotillard in that.

I must say, I did just see El Cantante, and despite her past film roles and the reviews for the flick, Jennifer's got it, man. I thought she was great, and I think far worse performances have gotten oscars than that of Jennifer's performance. Maybe a surprise nod?

I agree with Brian. If anyone actually beleives that El Cantante will win any oscars or even be nominated for one film award you are out of your mind. Please leave these forums and come back when you have a little common sense. J-Lo will get an oscar when Richard Simmons has a kid.

Yea, but Sasha's right. Recently, worse performances have won. I thought she was a lot better than Reese Witherspoon. I doubt she'll win, but a nomination is possible. Unlikely, but possible.

She should get the Best Actress Oscar and I think she has big chances... she is getting RAVE REVIEWS for her performance in "Savage Grace", e.g.:
"...Julianne Moore, in her most challenging role in years, will win plaudits and attract mature audiences to a THOROUGHLY ABSORBING AND POLISHED PIECE OF WORK." (Hollywood Reporter)
"Moore — in a heartbreaking, harrowing performance... "Presented properly, Moore is likely to get a lot of award attention."..."Moore is the film’s greatest asset; that much cannot be disputed." (Foxnews)
"Moore is an undeniably SUPERB ACTRESS" (Variety)
Lopez has absolutely no buzz nor support for El Cantante. Anybody who predicts her has to be an absolute jackass. You're more likely to see John Travolta nominated before her.

BEST ACTRESS PREDICTIONS
Cate Blanchett, The Golden Age
Julie Christie, Away from Her
Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose
Keira Knightley, Atonement
Julianne Moore, Savage Grace
Cate Blanchett seems the absolute frontrunner at this point, and I think she's on the way for her second Oscar. Julie Christie is said to be amazing in "Away from Her", and she's such a great actress! Marion Cotillard has one of the best bio-pic / one-woman shows of the year, so she'll probably be nominated. Keira Knightley is the lead star in one of the most-anticipated movies of the year (and a likely Best Picture contender), plus she has get good reviews so far. Julianne Moore could give an astonishing performance in "Savage Grace", but she'll be nominated only if her film is pushed enough and it's not missed at the box-office. I would have put some hopes on Catherine Keener for "An American Crime", but I've got the feeling this film will not come out in time for the end of the year (and that's generally a bad sign!).

Cate Blanchett- The Golden Age
Julie Christie- Away from Her
Keira Knightly- Atonement
Laura Linney- The Savages
Ellen Page- Juno
Reasoning:
Cate Blanchett has earned plenty of buzz for her performance even if The Golden Age is going nowhere right now. Julie Christie earned the best reviews of the first half of the year and will be the veteran/old woman of the group. Knightly is in the top contender for best picture so she should ride the Atonement wave to a nomination. Laura Linney has been earning raves and has the industry support and Ellen Page has Roger Ebert, one of the biggest allies a best actress contender can have.(Just ask Charlize Theron and Halle Berry.)

It seems Cottilard, Jolie and Christie are back strong! I loved Jolie earlier this year in "A Mighty Heart," and I think she deserves a nomination. I have yet to see the other two. Where's Kerri Russell? Not look good for her.
I think Christie is the closest thing to a lock of the three, followed by Cottilard, then Jolie.
Only two of them (if any at all) will make it in. I hope Jolie is among the two. The two will probably join....
Laura Linney
Cate Blanchett
Kiera Knightley

Ellen Page - Juno
Cate Blanchett - The Golden Age
Marion Cotillard - La Vie en Rose
Julie Christie - Away From Her
Keira Knightley - Atonement
okay, this is becoming a really hard category to predict. Ellen Page seems safe enough, and honestly she's the only one i really see winning. Blanchett will get this nod probably to go along with her win for I'm Not There. Marion Cotillard is portraying a real person, she is French, and she's been getting raves all year, so she's safe. Julie Christie will get a nomination out of pure love (think Peter O'Toole last year) and i think this final spot will definately fluctuate for me, but for now it is Keira Knightly simply bcus the Best Actress category is usually very closely tied to Best Picture, she is "in" right now, and she probably gave a wonderful performance despite the fact that everyone is kind of siding against her chances. Page for the win, no one is as close as her (especially if she picks up the Indie Spirit or the comedy GG)
ALTERNATES
Amy Adams - Enchanted
she was fantastic in Junebug, and she's getting plenty of positive buzz, but a Disney movie? i don't think she's Julie Andrews quite yet...
Angelina Jolie - A Mighty Heart
she'll be a threat until the end of the year, but i think she'll stay just that, a threat, not a nominee.
Laura Linney - The Savages
she's got love, but there are too many Comedy/Musical contenders who could pick up the GG (Page, Cotillard, Adams, Russel, Bonham Carter, Kidman) so she's not safe...yet

Angelina Jolie - A Mighty Heart
Julie Christie - Away From Her
Julianne Moore - Savage Grace
Marianne Cotillard - La Vie En Rose
Kiera Knightly - Atonement
-reasoning-
JOLIE - I think she turns in the strongest performance of her career and probably of the bunch. The cons are somewhat stong - early release, not so strong reviews on movie as a whole. But the pros will win out: career best performance, "comeback" factor, high profile, and rave personal reviews. Anyone who counts her out is just silly.
CHRISTIE - She is a critical darling who has been out of the picture for a while. And the movie and performance are very stong. The film probably wont be awarded anywhere else, so they will throw all of their campaigning into her performance. She will be the dark horse.
MOORE - Another critical darling. I am throwing a lot of eggs into this basket as not much has been said of the film yet. However early reviews say that Moore gives one of her best performances, and the Academy loves her. So I think this will be another in a long list of nominations for Moore.
COTILLARD - She fits into the foreign actor snagging a nominee for the year. Not to downplay her performance - which was fantastic. She deserves all the acclaim she has recieved. Also released early - I think she will still slip in.
KNIGHTLY - Another "career best" talk is going on here. I think that she will be the "youngster" of the bunch, and also it will add another bigger named star to the list. I think she will slide in, where perhaps others should.
-
those who will be overlooked
ELLEN PAIGE - Juno - I would much prefer her in the running than Knightly but I do not know if it is her time or not. She will have her day soon though! Sooner than later I hope, shes fantastic.
AMY ADAMS - Enchanted - Wouldn't it be funny? Shes a golden globe lock, but I doubt the Oscar chances. Even though you know they want to make up for snubbing her for Junebug.
CATE BLANCHETT - Elizabeth - The reviews will do her in. A good performance but a highly flawed film. Shes wonderful in everything but this wont be another nom or win Im afraid.

BTW: You write well, have you considered applying to become a critic for the site?
I think the combination of Cottilard's rave reviews; a recent profile written about her in the NY Times, and the fact that every Oscar predictor on earth has her in the top 5 right now, tells us that she's a lock.
Getting the seal of approval from Roger Ebert means big things for Ellen Page, and "Juno" seems like the kind of film that starts out very strong, and only gets stronger by day!
Of the five women I'm predicting to earn Actress nominations this year, I've only seen one of the performances: Julie Christie's in "Away From Her." I was really impressed by this performance because it's not your typical "i've lost my mind" performance. She manages to keep the audience as confused about her character, as she is about her memories, and that's a monumental achievement. She's has moments where she's very sweet, and tender towards her husband, whom she seldom recognizes, but then there are the moments where we see something in her eyes that reveals that times weren't always good between them. Furthermore, her eyes are so absent, so unbelievably dead as her condition worsens, that it shows she really sunk her teeth into playing this part, and experiencing this woman's emotional anguish.
Laura Linney and Kiera Knightley are the only question marks in my top 5 right now. Sure, Linney has recieved excellent reviews for her work in "The Savages," but is it an Oscar friendly performance? And Kiera Knightley's film is set to dominate many categories, but since her role is small, and Saoirse Ronan is a scene stealer, could she become this year's Nicole Kidman in "Cold Mountain?" Renee Zellweger and Jude Law earned nominations, but Kidman, who was also good, was left in the dust just because they outshined her.
If any of these women lose buzz, then I think Cate Blanchett could sneak back in to this race, bad reviews aside. The reviews for her performance were very favorable to her, plus she's playing a historic figure. Finally, I think Amy Adams and Angelina Jolie are very much in this race for now. The next few weeks will tell us, however, wheteher there going to stay in the race.

the Indie Spirit nominations were announced, someone's buzz went up and someone's buzz went down
Ellen Page - Juno*
Marion Cotillard - La Vie en Rose
Julie Christie - Away From Her
Amy Adams - Enchanted
Angelina Jolie - A Mighty Heart
Ellen Page received her first big precursor nomination with an Indie Spirit nod, and she seems likely to take it home (probably along with an Oscar and GG). Cotillard is a lock for a nod, period. Julie Christie should find no trouble getting nominated this year like Peter O'Toole last year. Amy Adams' buzz has now become undeniable within a year of endless Comedy/Musical contenders. As for Angeline Jolie, she also received a Indie Spirit nod and her buzz has gone up but she is not a lock
ALTERNATES
Laura Linney - The Savages
a great, well respected actress in a buzz worthy film does not always equal nomination. she failed at getting an Indie Spirit nod and that will hurt her in the long run
Keira Knightly - Atonement
her chances are decent and getting better now that Linney is falling out of the race. also, dramatic performances aren't really filling up this category, and she could find herself in the top 5
Cate Blanchett - The Golden Age
this is unlikely but if enough contenders fall off, she has a fighting chance

NOTE:
I saw "El Cantante" at the Toronto Film Festival and loved it so much that I started to push everyone to gain Oscar buzz for Jennifer Lopez in it. I also called it one of the best films of the year because it was a visual treat (and because of Lopez's performance)....
watching it on DVD however....
I realized that without the big screen, the film isn't as dazzling, and because I wasn't being dazzled, I could see the flaws existing in the story, acting, and production...
this remains one of the only times I found a movie great in theaters (****) - but very bad on DVD (*1/2)

I definitely think Keira has a shot at at least an Oscar nod since most reviews about here have been pretty positive
"Without many critics or precursors on her side, she needs a huge boost from the actors' guild." I gotta say whoever wrote this on the front page obviously hasn't read a lot of the critics response or the consensus. You really have to ignore a lot of the reviews if you actually believe this stuff.

That list is pretty good, but *yuck*- Christina Ricci? I can't believe that at one time I thought she'd really develop into a great actress- it looks like she has done just the opposite. Wow, slutty and neurotic bimbo...that must have been a stretch! LOL. Actually, I should take it easy on her- she was very good in 'Monster'.
Anyway, I would say (with the exception of Ricci) that I'd be happy if any of these broads on your list won the statue. Happy Oscaring!!

Now, that looks much better...I LOVE Blanchett to death but I think the nom for Elizabeth is pointless when some other constantly overlooked actress could be there. I would say Helena Bonham-Carter for Sweeny Todd should be in Cate's place- c'mon wasn't she great? It's about time she has gotten her due...
But, in a nutshell, that's dead on...unfortunately!
