Those are really good choices this early in the game. But, I am an avid Nicholson fan and I am just praying and hoping maybe his performance in The Bucket List will bring him a nod. So, here is my list:
1] Jack Nicholson-the bucket list
2] Tom Hanks-charlie wilsons war
3] johnny depp-sweeney todd
4] juoquian phoenix-reservation road
5] Russel Crowe-american gangster
I hope that the academy will come to their senses and decide to give depp a nomination for his performance, and maybe even a win, but that would be a stretch. I would LOVE to see nicholson get a nod even if just because they shamefully overlooked his performance in the departed. So there are my predictions for this years best actor.

*Jared Leto Chapter 27
*Jack Nicholson The bucket list
*Daniel Day- Lewis There will be blood
*Emile Hirsch Into the wild
*Joaquin Phoenix Reservation Road
I've seen Chapter 27 and I really think Leto will be a darkhorse when the oscars arrives. Leto is a lock IMO and I just saw the trailer for Into the wild and was blown away. I have a feeling both the film and Hirschs performance will be getting alot of buzz as soon as it hits theaters.
The other three are getting alot of buzz, specially Lewis and Phoenix they both have baity roles and I think one of them will probably end up winning the statue. Oh and lets not forget about Jack for just simply being Jack.

I can't see Day-Lewis not getting a nomination at least, Johnny has the love, I think the character will fit his strong suits well. Look out for John Cusack's FYC campaign, he has the Weinsteins behind him, and you all know what that can do. As for Denzel, I feel he's going to be take this movie over. Joaquin for the win, he's due enough.

I am just stating the fact that I like them and they are amazing actors. Nobody has seen there movies and you're right, but they have no problem saying they think they WON'T win. And I know people who have sen screenings of the possible nominees and they said their performances were average. So in realoty, nobody has a right to say who should win until ALL movies are out, but that hasn't stopped everyone on this board from predicting winners and nominees.

Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood

James McAvoy - Atonement
John Cusack - Grace is Gone
It's looks as if (sadly) Joaquin has fallen off. Brutal. Anyways, now Day-Lewis is leading the pack, but Johnny has the Comedy/Musical GG locked up, so that will translate into a nod, but a win? It's still hard to say. I expect the critics to warm up to three people involved with this film (Depp, Bonham-Carter, Burton) and expect them all to get nods. I think it could become neck-and-neck between these two. Denzel will take himself to a nod and doesn't need any help. McAvoy has the young man nod probably, as there is no one who can steal his spot for now. Also, the fact that Ryan Gosling was Canadian, and he is Scottish, doesn't hurt his chances. I see John Cusack getting the nod, but it's not looking good for the film itself, which could hurt him.
ALTERNATES
Viggo Mortensen - Eastern Promises
I wasn't impressed by him in A History of Violence, but this performance looks completely developed. I have high hopes for him, but little faith.
Tom Hanks - Charlie Wilson's War
He is so loved by the Academy, it would be easy for him to be nominated. But they aren't sick of nominating him yet? He doesn't get any points for doing The Da Vinci Code either.
Emile Hirsch - Into The Wild
James McAvoy's only enemy in this race, but McAvoy has the edge as of now.

John Cusack- Grace is Gone
Daniel Day-Lewis- There Will Be Blood
Johnny Depp- Sweeney Todd
Tom Hanks- Charlie Wilson's War
James McAvoy- Atonement
Reasoning:
Tom Hanks and Daniel Day-Lewis are former winners with great buzz and industry respect, as long as their films are good they should find their way into the race. I don't think Sweeney Todd will click with the Academy but I think they love Depp enough to give a nod ala Pirates. John Cusack is the anchor of Grace is Gone and AMPAS should embrace the loving father character. Finally, James McAvoy should be nominated as he is the breakout star this year and is heralded as Atonement's scene stealer. However, these actors should look out for Emile Hirsch, especially if the film takes off at the box office, he will be the first to jump up and replace one these above mentioned nominees.

Denzel Washington - American Gangster
John Cusack - Grace is Gone
James McAvoy - Atonement
Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood
Viggo Mortensen - Eastern Promises
I think Joaquin's pretty much out of the race, seeing as how the film was so poorly received. Denzel Washington's a lock I think, he has the industry support and well I haven't seen AG, but the trailer looked amazing! McAvoy(sp?) will probably get a nod too judging from the Atonement buzz now. Daniel Day-Lewis is another lock in my opinion. As for Viggo, EP and his performance are gaining huge buzz as of now. And there's John Cusack, who's really long over-due of a nomination. Hollywood loves him, plus he's got Weinstein behind him, so I think he has a good chance.

I have a really hard time keep McAvoy in there though. The Academy just doesn't seem to like him. But, I have to believe they'll go the way of Ryan Gosling and give him the nod as new upcomer. But really none of these films have been released yet, so will have to wait and see.

i just recently saw 2 trailers, Sweeney Todd and Charlie Wilson's War. they were both disappointments. Day-Lewis seems to be a lock for a nom, maybe the win. Denzel is in, McAvoy is pretty safe. Johnny can't win, but he'll have a GG which he has never won, so that's a start. all the critics are raving about benecio del toro's latest performance, which is no surprise to me because he is one the most talented actors working. consensus is ADVANTAGE=DAY-LEWIS

........................................................
the last spot is open for me. there are 3 contenders for it.
1. John Cusack - Grace is Gone
he seems to be a shoe-in with a baity role, no nominations in the past so he could be considered due, the Weinsteins behind him, combined with a late release and he could be looking at his first nod. the things holding him back are some negative response to the film itself, also a very busy category.
2. Ryan Gosling - Lars and the Real Girl
it's the kind of role that does get looked at and does get nominated, and i dont really think it's too early for nod #2 bcus it might be the right role, completely different from the last one that got him nominated. the things holding him back are the low success rate for lead actors in comedies to get nominated lately (Aaron Eckhart-TYfS, Paul Giamatti-Sideways, Jeff Daniels-TSatW, Jim Carrey-ESotSM, even Sacha Baron Cohen) so i think that will ultimately hold him back.
3. Benecio Del Toro - Things We Lost in the Fire
he's an excellent actor and he has received amazing reviews. the role is somewhat baity, and i'm sure he's done wonders with it. but will it be enough to get him into this category?
what i would really love to see is a competitor come out of nowhere to get nominated, but its not happening. i'de be happy with Gosling getting nominated to break this comedy curse for lead actors

This category is going to be interesting. Right now it seems to be a two-horse race with Johnny Depp and Daniel Day-Lewis. We can blame Kris Tapley's article The Oil Man vs. The Demon Barber for getting that started. Nearly everyone got on the bandwagon and these two are at the top of most, if not all, prediction charts.
Now, after seeing the infamous 17 minutes of the film shown at Lincoln Center and gauging audience reaction, columnists at the New York Post, New York Daily News, Fox News and a few others have all dropped the words Oscar and Oscar-worthy about Depp's performance in their write-ups of the evening and the number of people who believe that he's the frontrunner is increasing.
We've yet to see how these two films are received by the general public and AMPAS. Many viewers feel that, despite its magnificence as a film, There Will Be Blood is too divisive, his character too monstrous and lacking in redeeming qualities, and in turn DDL's chances at a win, possibly even a nomination, may be less. Some even predict that there will be a DDL backlash and he won't even be nominated, which leaves Johnny Depp as the clear frontrunner and little by litte he seems to be emerging as such.
Maybe this year is Depp's year. Very good buzz, Oscar-baity role in a movie based on what is considered one of the greatest musicals ever written, if not the greatest. He's a lock for a C/M lead actor Golden Globe nomination and I don't see him losing there (though, of course, we could be surprised). His buzz and momentum will only keep growing as the movie's release date draws near. And everyone loves him and is routing for him. Unless this film does badly with audiences and critics (which I don't think it will) it doesn't seem like he can lose. I still use the word seem because it's early.
I'm glad you mention John Cusack as a possible dark horse, josh. I would be very happy to see him get a nomination finally, but I don't know how likely that is. And a win is even more of a stretch.
As the rest of the films are released and the dust clears we'll know more of course. Today it's looking to me like this category is Depp's to lose, with DDL right behind unless he's shut out due to the nature of the film and his role (although based on reports of his performance it seems to me that it would be impossible to deny him a nom - and I still can't wait to see him and TWBB). But I'm also keeping an eye on the other contenders in this category, even the ones further down on the list, and wondering which one might be the dark horse that surprises everyone. Tom mentioned McAvoy and Hirsch in his article, but I'm looking at a few other possibilities too.

BEST ACTOR
1. Daniel Day Lewis - There Will Be Blood
2. Johnny Depp - Sweeney Todd
3. George Clooney - Michael Clayton
4. Viggo Mortensen - Eastern Promises
5. Emile Hirsch - Into the Wild
Alt: Ryan Gosling - Lars and the Real Girl, Denzel Washington - American Gangster, and Frank Langella - Starting Out in the Evening
Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood*
George Clooney - Michael Clayton
Johnny Depp - Sweeney Todd
Viggo Mortensen - Eastern Promises
Ryan Gosling - Lars and the Real Girl
Day-Lewis looks safe as ever now that Johnny has been snubbed at the SAGs. he pretty much has this one locked up. Clooney is a lock for a nod whether i like it or not. Johnny, you can't win this year. maybe playing Dillinger will bring better luck. Viggo Mortensen has ridden a wave of precursor love to become a lock (pretty much) but he's no real threat for the win. as for #5, Gosling is a good choice for me bcus, 1. he's received GG and SAG nods, which would make his snub almost as bad as Giamatti, 2. it's an unusual, baity role like Jimmy Stewart in Harvey (much, much different than his last nominated role), 3. he's young, and fresh in voter's minds from last year 4. he's proved that there's a lotta love for him in Hollywood. all these things seems to make him a shoe-in, but they are also the things that could hold him back.
ALTERNATES
Emile Hirsch - Into the Wild*
he's on the borderline of being nominated for me, doesn't mean it can't happen very easily
Denzel Washington - American Gangster
if the Academy decides to love this movie, he will probably get nominated
James McAvoy - Atonement
SAG snub is not a good omen for Atonement

4. Viggo Mortensen-Lock; Unlikely for win
5. Emile Hirsch- Likely; His film has more soild buzz that MacAvoy's or Washington's; unlikely for win
Unlikely spoilers:
1. James McAvoy- If they go ape shit over atonement

3. Ryan Gosling- If they go completly insane

These are my choices for Best Actor 2007--Not necessarily who I think The Academy will nominate:
BEST ACTOR
Emile Hirsch - Into The Wild
Samuel L. Jackson - Black Snake Moan
Phillip Seymour Hoffman - Before The Devil Knows You're Dead
James Macavoy - Atonement
Daniel Day Lewis - There Will Be Blood

Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will be Blood
Need I say more?
George Clooney - Michael Clayton
His buzz has been constant with the film. Hollywood's favorite player is due for nod #2.
Johnny Depp - Sweeney Todd
SAG snubb is alarming, but his star power plus great reviews should be enough to land him his third nomination.
Emile Hirsch - Into the Wild
His buzz has been growing, and his youthful "breakout" status gives him an edge in a category that desperately needs that sort of push.
Viggo Mortensen - Eastern Promises
The Golden Globe and SAG nods confirm that he's ready for his first nomination (about time, too).
Possible Upset:
Ryan Gosling - Lars and the Real Girl
I keep wanting to believe that this isn't happening. The film is just sooooooo strange that it doesn't even look like something they'd embrace. But Gosling has the trifecta of nominations and that has to mean something, right? I sure hope not, but on nomination morning, his name has to be one to considered when they call this category.
