I really hope that Tim Burton gets nominated for Sweeney Todd. I love Burton, in fact it was him whose films first inspired me to pursue the career of becoming a film director. And I would think it very nice to see him with a nomination and a possible win. He should have gotten a nod for "Big Fish" but I hope Todd will reverse that mistake.

its chances will be killed eventually....)

Joel and Ethan Coen-No Country for Old Men(haven't seen it but I'm sure it will be great)
Tony Gilroy-Michael Clayton(I doubt it will happen but I think he deserves it)
Ang Lee-Lust, Caution(He did a great job)
Sean Penn:Into the Wild(Very Oscar bait director nod I think)
Ridley Scott: American Gangster(he doesn't deserve a nod in my opinion i saw a preveiw screening and its great but there are just too many better movies this year. but as a make-up oscar he does deserve a nod)
without Ridley my other pick would be:
Andrew Dominck: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Ridley Scott - American Gangster*
Joel and Ethan Coen - No Country For Old Men
Joe Wright - Atonement
Paul Thomas Anderson - There Will Be Blood
Jason Reitman - Juno
Even though I doubt that Ridley Scott is going to win (why is due? what has he done that's all that great?) he seems to be in the lead. The Coen brothers are on their way to a screenplay/director combo, but I don't see a Best Picture nod for some reason. Joe Wright is British, he's directed one of the year's best, and he's on his way to a nod. I think that this Director nod is what P.T. Anderson needs to carry him to a Best Adapted Screenplay win, so I see it happening. As for Jason Reitman, he's a wild card. It could happen if the film is awarded well.
ALTERNATES
Julian Schnabel - The Diving Bell & The Butterfly
He could be looking at a lonely director nod, he won Best Director at Cannes and that helped Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu last year, and it helped David Lynch in 2002.
Tim Burton - Sweeney Todd
From the trailer, it looks like a standard Burton flick, nonetheless, the buzz is there. I don't see it though.
Mike Nichols - Charlie Wilson's War
The trailer looks like a comedy, so I have no idea what direction he's going in. I'm really only interested in one person involved with this film, PHS.

The Coen Brothers- No Country for Old Men
Sydney Lumet- Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Sean Penn- Into the Wild
Julian Schnabel- The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Ridley Scott- American Gangster
I think the DGA nominations will give us what an indication of who the nominees will be. The Coen Brothers and Sean Penn seem like they are pretty strong right now and I think that the DGAs will embrace the veteran(Lumet), the mainstream(Scott) and the artistic(Schnabel).

Joel Coen & Ehtan Coen - No Country for Old Men
These two are just sweeping the precursers and I think there is little doubt that they'll actually be taking this award.
Julian Schnabel - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
He seems like a contender who's out of place, but his presence at all the precursers indicate that he's definetly in.
Sean Penn - Into the Wild
The Oscars have proven time and time again that their love afrair with actors who direct will never stop. I don't believe Penn will be the exception.
Paul Thomas Anderson - There Will Be Blood
His writing has always been praised, but I think his DGA nomination now says that they're ready to embrace his directing.
Tim Burton - Sweeney Todd
Despite his DGA snubb (I'm still very upset about that), I think Burton does have an edge over some of his other competitors. His film has gotten great reviews and he has a lot of name recognition as well. The same thing happened last year with Clint Eastwood for "Letters from Iwo Jima." Still, he's not on safe ground.
Possible Upset:
Sidney Lumet - Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
He will always be a favorite for the Academy, and that has a way of coming out of nowhere with a nomination. His major precurser abscence is alarming, but his own body of work could lead some voters to believe that he's ready for another nod. I wouldn't be surprised if his name ends up taking the fifth spot away from Burton or even Anderson.

*Sarah Polley - Away From Her
*Sean Penn - Into The Wild
*Jason Reitman - Juno
*Tim Burton - Sweeney Todd
*Joe Wright - Atonement
I've seen 4 of the 5 movies (not Sweeney Todd) and put Burton on there because it seems his movies get nominated alot and he has Depp in his favour as leading man. I'm surprised no one else said Sarah Polley, maybe they just don't think a woman will win or even if a woman director is allowed to be nominated -- but she did a phenomenal job directing her first film and she'a fellow Canadian like myself and I grew up watching her on TV so I hope she gets acknowledged in some way in either country (moreseo in Canada because that is where she is from and lives) for her work.
