They are two amazing actors and they have to win the best actor. To be honest, I do NOT get why Joaquin Phoenix is getting a lot of buzz. I saw a screening of that movie and although it was OKAY...it was NOT a picture I thought he would be nominated for. He wasn't that great in in. Tom Hanks is an amazing actor in everything he does and so is Johnny Depp. Joaquin's performance was just average. It seems like the only reason he is getting buzz is because he is the "indie guy" who doesn't do a lot of mainstream movies...I PRAY he doesn't win.

Gladiator, Walk The line and Signs were all mainstream flicks that hes gotten awards attention for. Your the first person who really seems to think he wont get a nod. Tom Hanks wont win because he already has two oscars on his shelf. depp has a 50/50 chance with Sweeny Todd, he's never been nominated for working with Tim Burton. Joaquin Phoenix has the best shot right now, followed by Daniel Day Lewis, than Depp than Hanks. chill out man,

I don't thik Joaquin deserves to win at all. He is a mediocre actor to me. And it's kind of hard for people to say that he will win or be nominated, when depp's and hank's movie hasn't even been out yet. It hasn't even been through screening. And there is big buzz about depps movie. I hope he wins. He should have gotten one long ago.

I am not the only person who doesn't want him to get a nod. Look on the board of predictions, several people don't think so. I am not saying he WON'T, I am saying he SHOULDN'T. He doesn't deserve one. He isn't a bad actor, but he isn't the best out of the so far possible contenders. I think people pick him because he is the low profile type of celebrity. Someone else said that on another board and it made sense. They said, Johny Depp and Leo are better than Joaquin..but because years back Depp and Leo were teen idol heartthrobs(and still kind of are)...they didn't win. The academy doesn't like the young hollywood heartthrob type and that is the only explaination as to why those two haven't won yet. If you saw Leo's performance in "whats eating gilbert grape" there was NO doubt an oscar should have come. But at that time he was on the cover of bop magazine the old people who are voting don't like young teen idol actors to take oscars..even if they ARE good. Where as Joaquin is the "dark" indie actor who strays away from the spotlight and for the most part, that is the type of person they like picking. Half of the time they pick people I barely hear of as winners. Sometimes the oscars is about image and that is what I hate. If someone like paris hilton came out with an AMAZING performance (which would NEVER happen she sucks at everything) they wouldn't give her anything because she is paris hilton. And it shouldn't be based on your public image, it should be based on talent. I have seen several Joaquin movies and none of them were so jaw dropping amazing.

Well all im saying is, I went to a preview screening and most everyone there thought the preformance by Phoenix was very good, good enough for an oscar nod. And in case you havent read my predictions, i say that Depp also probably will get a nomination, and i hope he does but the fact is he is in a Tim burton film and Tim sometimes tends to go more for quantity than quality as he is a very visual filmaker. Phoenix on the other hand gave an impressive preformance in a film by the widely acclaimed and respected Terry george which gives him a slight edge. Tom Hanks on the other hand has a more probable chance than depp as he is a respected veteran.

It's okay everyone has a right to their opinion. I just hope johnny wins because he is long overdue and way older than Joaquin. So he has waited a bit longer.
