Best Picture:

Winner: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Nominees:

Slumdog Millionaire

Frost/Nixon

Milk

The Dark Knight

Reason: Slumdog Millionaire was critical favorite, but Benjamin Button had starpower, a well-respected director, and a sentimental storyline. The Dark Knight does get a nom after all.

Best Director: David Fincher, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Nominees:

Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire

Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight

Gus Van Sant, Milk

Woody Allen, Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Reasons: Fincher is almost a lock for Best Director. He beats out the competition pretty handily and finally gets recognition. Woody Allen sneaks onto the board since he is a veteran, is beloved by Hollywood, and made his best movie in years. He bumps a more deserving Ron Howard out of the way.
