Michelle Pfeiffer- Cheri
Meryl Streep- Julie & Julia
Carey Mulligan-An Education
Marion Cotillard-Nine
Saoirse Ronan- The Lovely Bones
OR
Gabourey Sidibe- Precious
Marion Cotillard is either going to be nominated in Lead (Nine) or Supporting (Public Enemies). I expect her to be nominated for whichever film the Academy likes better. There is no way the Academy will nominate two teenagers. It'll be a battle between the two all season (Unless Ronan goes supporting).

Hilary Swank: Amelia
Helen Mirren: Love Ranch
Michelle Pfeiffer: Cheri
Saoirse Ronan: The Lovely Bones
Meryl Streep: Julie & Julia
As much as I cant stand Hilary Swank I think she will get a nomination but I feel the Academy will, rightfully so, give Meryl her third over swank any day of the week.

Swank deserved her 2 Oscars. I'm probably one of the few who think so and the fact that she's playing Amelia Earhart already gives her a spot. She's probably the only one who I can say will end up being nominated at this point. I was impressed with the trailer. AMPAS love their bios. And it seems this year will be filled with women in bios. Along with Swank - Emily Watson, Audrey Tatou, Amy Adams, Abbie Cornish, Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep are all playing real life women.
It does look like Meryl is going to recieve yet another nomination. She has two films coming out. Something Good (working title for Nancy Meyers' film) is coming out in December and Meyers did get vet Diane Keaton a nod for Something's Gotta Give. Plus, I remember back to when Meryl did an interview with, I think it was Letterman, and she said she was going to ask Meyers to write in a nude scene. If that happens, I say a win for Meryl just for coming out naked.

I agree, I highly, highly doubt there will be two teenage best actress nominees. I honestly think the only assured nominee is Carey Mulligan.
Here are my predictions:
Abbie Cornish, Bright Star
-She's been under the radar for awhile, and I feel like this role will finally give her her due.
Carey Mulligan, An Education
-Breakout star of the year. Could be the winner.
Saoirse Ronan, The Lovely Bones
-If she pulls this off (and if they have her in lead, which they should since she's the main focus in the book), then she will beat Kate Winslet as the youngest actress to acquire 2 Academy Award nominations.
Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia
-you KNOW they will put her in lead for this (like they did The Devil Wears Prada). It will be curious to see if she has competition from herself when Something Good comes out. Is Something Good "Something's Gotta Give" Nancy Meyers or "The Holiday" Nancy Meyers?
Hilary Swank, Amelia
-I think she's a default nominee. This role screams Oscar, and if she doesn't suck it up, then I think she's undoubtedly in. I doubt she'll win though.
Alternatives:
Michelle Pfeiffer, Cheri
--Just saw this today and she's absolutely fantastic in it. I'd love to see her get nominated, but I fear her and the film will be overlooked. But then again, she IS Michelle Pfeiffer and highly respected.
Gabourney Sidibe, Precious
--I'm on the fence with her. I agree with someone's post earlier--I highly doubt both Saoirse and her will BOTH be nominated. But I could be wrong. I have a feeling much of the critical acclaim will go to Mo'Nique.

Michelle Pfeiffer is not getting a nomination, her films reviews were terrible, her personal reviews were terrible, and the film bombed.
Emily Watson won't be nominated because her film has no North American distributor and it isn't looking very likely she'll get one by the end of the year.
I hope the studio does campaign Meryl for Lead for "Julie and Julia" since there really are no leading contenders for this award this year.
This year has got to be one of the worst years for lead roles for women. I mean we only have like 7 or 8 to choose from and none of them are really standing out, like we had Hilary Swank for Boys don't cry, Helen Mirren The queen, Charlize Theron Monster etc. Nothing like that this year.

Meryl Streep - Julie & Julia
Hilary Swank - Amelia
Penelope Cruz - Broken Embraces
Carey Mulligan - An Education
Rachel Weisz - The Lovely Bones
I think Saoirse Ronan will go supporting. I've just finished "The Lovely Bones" and, except for a few parts, she tells us what happens to her family. So maybe Rachel Weisz might go leading. But we have to see the film or at least read the script to be sure about that.

i think it will not be hilary swank! she had her time, she robbed anette benning twice, both of her wins were overrated, i think it will either be abbie cornish for bright star michelle pfeiffer for cheri, she is long overdue and the academy loves comebacks, steep is a show in for a nom but she wont win and same with penelope cruz def nom, but she already won and her time is not now, but i have to see these films first lol! that's an early assumption
