NFL's Vick indicted in dogfighting probe *Caution: Graphic details!!

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury on charges related to illegal dogfighting.
Vick and three others are charged with competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting and conducting the enterprise across state lines.
The dogfighting operation was named "Bad Newz Kennels," according to the indictment, and the dogs were housed, trained and fought at a Surry County, Va., property owned by Vick.
The indictment alleges that the 27-year-old Vick and his co-defendants began a grisly dogfighting operation in early 2001 in which dogs fought to the death - or close. Losing dogs were sometimes killed by electrocution, drowning, hanging or gunshots.
If convicted, Vick and the others - Purnell A. Peace, Quanis L. Phillips and Tony Taylor - could face up to six years in prison, $350,000 in fines and restitution.
Telephone messages left at the offices and home of Vick's attorney, Larry Woodward, were not immediately returned. A woman who answered the phone at the home of Vick's mother said the family knew nothing about the charges.
"We are disappointed that Michael Vick has put himself in a position where a federal grand jury has returned an indictment against him," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said.
"The activities alleged are cruel, degrading and illegal. Michael Vick's guilt has not yet been proven, and we believe that all concerned should allow the legal process to determine the facts."
After an initial raid in April, Vick said he was rarely at the house, had no idea it may have been used in a criminal enterprise and blamed family members for taking advantage of his generosity.
On Vick's Web site, he lists his birthplace as Newport News, "a.k.a. BadNews."
The four men were accused of "knowingly sponsoring and exhibiting an animal fighting venture" and conducting a business enterprise involving gambling, as well as buying, transporting and receiving dogs for the purposes of an animal fighting venture.
Purses for the fights ranged from hundreds of dollars to the thousands, and participants and spectators placed side bets, the document said.
About eight young dogs were put to death after they were found not ready to fight in April 2007. They were killed "by hanging, drowning and/or slamming at least one dog's body to the ground," according to the indictment.
The FBI and local authorities have been investigating the allegations since an April 25 drug raid at the property Vick owned.
Authorities seized 66 dogs, including 55 pit bulls, and equipment commonly used in dogfighting. About half the dogs were tethered to car axles with heavy chains that allowed the dogs to get close to each other, but not to have contact - an arrangement typical for fighting dogs, according to the search warrant affidavit.
The indictment said dogfights were held at the Virginia property and dog owners brought animals from six states, including New York and Texas.
In a search warrant executed July 7, the government said the fights usually occurred late at night or in the early morning and would last several hours.
Before fights, participating dogs of the same sex would be weighed and bathed, according to the filings. Opposing dogs would be washed to remove any poison or narcotic placed on the dog's coat that could affect the other dog's performance.
Sometimes, dogs weren't fed to "make it more hungry for the other dog," it said.

Associated Press writers Bob Lewis and Kristen Gelineau contributed to this report.
Beaverton, OR (19 July, 2007) - Nike is concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations made against Michael Vick and we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent. We do believe that Michael Vick should be afforded the same due process as any citizen, therefore, we have not terminated our relationship. We have however made the decision to suspend the release of the Zoom Vick V and related marketing communications. Nike will continue to monitor the situation closely and have no further comment at this time.
Another great show at Lab Specialty and new RE Title
by Rebecca & Krystal with big red lab Sandy :0) (no login)
Well, this is how our Thursday and Friday Lab Specialty show held at Champoeg State Park went with Sandy. Thursday was predicted to be extremely hot and it was. The trial got behind schedule so we did not get into the ring until around 1pm. We had Sandy entered in Novice Obedience, Graduate Novice, and Rally Excellent for both days. He already has his CD, but we entered him to keep his skills up and I need the extra ring practice. Plus, Specialties are always a lot of fun and who knows you can earn a placement or even shoot for High In Trial. Graduate Novice is a non-regular class so no credit there towards a leg but it was a chance to test him on some more advanced open skills like out of sight down, drop on recall, dumbell recall, high jump, broad jump, etc.
Anyhow, there were 7 dogs entered in Novice B and we took 2nd place...I was proud of my boy since it was hot and most of the ring was in the sun....he scored 174/200 which was not bad since 1st got a 179 and she was an experienced dog with performance lines from a breeder. Then right after I had him perform his graduate novice exercises. He did better on the heeling but refused the broad jump and some other bobbles thus got a low score but hey you don't have to qualify. He got 1st out of 1 dog---me--so not a real win there but some great practice and learning. Then Krystal was up next to try for his RE final leg. Well, as you can guess that was WAY TOO much to be asking of any dog and he performed miserably. Lack of attention, whacked the jump twice and even almost broke the honor dog--so he NQ'd. Krystal was quite upset as to her usual NQ pattern so I had to convince her to get back up in the saddle on Friday. Hopefully, Friday will not be so hot like not in high 90's and at least have a breeze...whew.
We headed out Friday to the show feeling great... temperature was good and Krystal was resigned to the fact that he may not qualify at this show for his RE. She decided to try her handling skills with him in Obedience. Well wouldn't you know it. She went and beat all of his CD title scores that I put on him. 184.5 which was darn good and only (1.5) points from getting High in Trial. He was 1st out of 7 dogs. He got a nice blue ribbon rosette which I have secretly always dreamed of having one day...an AKC Blue ribbon...which Krystal earned for Sandy :0)
I then handled him in Graduate Novice and he did miserably with me on his heeling as he wanted to be with Krystal not me. He did alright on some other tasks but only got a score of 160 but improved over his previous score. He again got 1st out of 1 entery (me)...he also got Highest Score in Non-Regular class which I was the only entry so not hard to do and kind of embarassing to receive the prize and huge ribbon...but it looks nice on his wall none the less.
The real prize that day was his RE Title!!!! They broke for lunch so time for Sandy and all to rest up for the big RE run. HE QUALIFIED with a 176 which was great considering the distractions. Someone that won a duck call at the auction was blowing it at the nearby picnic shelter while Krystal was in the ring...Sandy froze and went into hunt mode...almost perfect pointing hunting dog stance. Anyhow, she told him no leave it...no duckies...no duckies...well anyone that knows retrievers they love the sound of duckies. She got him refocused though and was able to finish the course. He can not do his reverse steps well so he lost lots of points on that and then other points mostly for inattentive slow response stuff which is usual for him sometimes. Three dogs were entered and he qualified so he got 3rd place...not a bad way to finish his RE title.
Now Krystal wants to look into tracking with him in the fall/spring when that is when Tracking events are held and of course onward towards his Open Obedience Title which will take awhile since there is such a huge gap between novice and open. Maybe he'll be ready for Rose City in January :0) that is my goal.
Krystal's Minpin Sakura will also be out there doing stuff and she'll be trying for her RA at Stumptown and also a run in Pre-Novice. A lot of other fellow DogTown friend's will be there also working to finish up titles and even try for some new title legs. So I look forward to seeing you all there, though I will be like a ghost just floating around until Krystal and Sakura finish their events as Sakura does not do well when I'm around.
Just stick with your dogs and keep training them and you will succeed... be it for competiton or for a great companion to be around...training does make a difference. Sandy is only going to be three in August and he has come a long way since he started with Stacey when he was a 3month old pup. Her Rally classes are awesome and Krystal would not have been able to get Sandy and Sakura to where they are today if it weren't for DogTown's training and support.
What AWESOME NEWS!!! Huge Congratulations to you guys!!!!
You've worked so hard and come such a long way in such a short time!
CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN!!!!!
I'm so proud of Krystal, Rebecca and Sandy! Great work in the ring and it takes a lot of guts to get out there and try new things. Every experience, whether you qualify or not, is a learning experience. Since you're doing things the right way and with the right mindset, you're having fun with your boy at the same time he's achieving titles:)
A huge Congratulations on every run and especially the new RE title!
Can't wait to see how everyone does at the Expo Center next weekend! See you all there!
It’s summertime, and the living isn’t always easy for our animal companions. Dogs and cats can suffer from the same problems that humans do—overheating, dehydration and even sunburn—when the mercury rises. By taking these simple precautions, you can keep your animal companions happy and healthy in the hot weather:
* Exercise your dog in the cool of the early morning or evening—never when it's extremely hot or humid. Take care not to let your dog stand on hot asphalt, as his sensitive paw pads can easily burn.
* Provide plenty of shade and cool, clean water for animals kept outdoors. And during the hottest part of the day, please bring your cat or dog inside to rest in a cool part of the house.
* Never leave your animal alone in a vehicle. Overheating can be fatal. Even with the doors open, a parked automobile can become a furnace in no time. Parking in the shade offers little protection, as the sun shifts during the day.
* Some animals will need extra special care in hot weather, especially those who are elderly and overweight or have heart or lung disease. Certain breeds of dogs, including pugs, bulldogs, Lhasa apsos and shih tzus, also need extra attention on hot days. If your pet is showing signs of heat stroke or exhaustion, take him to your veterinarian immediately.

We would like to offer our condolences to the Smith family for their loss of Luv! Most of you probably know Luv as being attached to the side of Alexis most of the time. Luv was very lucky to find her way to Alexis and have someone give her all the love and attention that she lacked before becoming apart of the Smith family. Alexis participated in Agility, Obedience and Rally Classes, as well as being on her way with Luv in the Mixed Breed Club. Luv will be greatly missed and has left a hole in our DogTown family too! Our thoughts and wishes are with Alexis, Anne-Marie, Randy, Christina, Andrew and her fur sisters, Jewel and Meisha.
Luv was very fortunate to share her life with and you gave her a great life. She was always so happy and had a smile on her face for all to see all the time. She will be truly missed. Our thoughts are with you at this time.

KEEP YOUR PETS HAPPY AND HEALTHY THIS FOURTH OF JULY
This is the time of year when many pets are lost by being spooked by the loud noises of the fireworks. Shelters fill up quickly by pets whos owners didn't follow some simple precautions to help protect them. Remember to always microchip, license and have an ID tag on your pet. Keep your pet in a kennel or safe environment during fireworks, this includes cats as well.
For many people, nothing beats lounging in the backyard on the Fourth of July with good friends and family—including the four-legged members of the household. While it may seem like a great idea to reward Rover with scraps from the grill and bring him along to watch fireworks, in reality some festive foods and products can be potentially hazardous to your pets. ASPCA experts offer the following tips:
* Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.
* Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pets’ reach. Certain types of matches, for example, contain chlorates, which could potentially damage blood cells and result in difficulty breathing.
* Keep your pets on their normal diet. Any change, even for one meal, can give your pets severe indigestion and diarrhea. And keep in mind that foods such as onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes and raisins, salt and yeast dough can all be potentially toxic to companion animals.
* Loud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, so please resist the urge to take them to Independence Day festivities. Instead, keep your little guys safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area at home.
