Happy Birthday, Tony!

by Tami (no login)

I wanted to wish Tony a Happy 1st Birthday. I am sorry I won't be at your party tomorrow with all your friends but I know you will have lots of fun. I am pretty sure you had a great celebration with your family tonight and was a very happy boy. I look forward to all the pictures!

I have enjoyed all your milestones and hope to have many more to come.

Re: Happy Birthday, Tony!

Tony wanted to thank you for wishing him a good b-day! He is trying to be a "big boy" now. Something we will be working on for quite a while, I'm sure. He had a great B-day on Friday and the party on Saturday was wonderful! He was exhausted on Sunday from all the excitement. Can't wait for next year!

Poison Prevention Week-DO YOU KNOW HOW TO POISON-PROOF YOUR HOME?

by DogTown (no login)

Ready to do a little homework, pet parents? National Poison Prevention Week is almost here©¤March 16 to March 22©¤and because our pets depend on us to keep them safe, we think it¡¯s the perfect time to review the harmful substances your furry explorers may encounter at home. Here are just a few ways to ensure that your household is pet poison-proof:

Keep prescription and over-the-counter drugs such as painkillers, cold and flu preparations and antidepressants behind tightly closed cabinet doors.

Make sure chocolate, coffee and other potentially dangerous foods are kept out of pets' reach.

When using products to eliminate fleas, ticks and other pests, follow directions exactly. Be sure the item you¡¯re using has been formulated specifically for your pet, and check with your veterinarian before using it.

Many common household plants such as lilies, azaleas and kalanchoe can cause surprisingly severe, even life-threatening effects in pets. Please check our complete lists of toxic and nontoxic plants.

Take care to use cleaning products that have been proven safe for use around pets. If you do use bleaches, detergents or disinfectants, keep your pets away from the cleaned areas until the product has dried thoroughly, and be sure to store the products in a secure place.

Visit the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) online for lists of specific items that could be dangerous to pets. And if you fear your pet has been poisoned, don¡¯t panic. Call the APCC hotline at (888) 426-4435. Please note that a consultation fee for this service applies.

Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pet
- Alcoholic beverages
- Avocado
- Chocolate (all forms)
- Coffee (all forms)
- Fatty foods
- Macadamia nuts
- Moldy or spoiled foods
- Onions, onion powder
- Raisins and grapes
- Salt
- Yeast dough
- Garlic
- Products sweetened with xylitol

Warm Weather Hazards
- Animal toxins¡ªtoads, insects, spiders, snakes and scorpions
- Blue-green algae in ponds
- Citronella candles
- Cocoa mulch
- Compost piles Fertilizers
- Flea products
- Outdoor plants and plant bulbs
- Swimming-pool treatment supplies
- Fly baits containing methomyl
- Slug and snail baits containing metaldehyde

Medication
Common examples of human medications that can be potentially lethal to pets, even in small doses, include:
- Pain killers
- Cold medicines
- Anti-cancer drugs
- Antidepressants
- Vitamins
- Diet Pills

Common Household Hazards
- Fabric softener sheets
- Mothballs
- Post-1982 pennies (due to high concentration of zinc)

Non-toxic Substances for Dogs and Cats
The following substances are considered to be non-toxic, although they may cause mild gastrointestinal upset in some animals:
- Water-based paints
- Toilet bowl water
- Silica gel
- Poinsettia
- Cat litter
- Glue traps
- Glow jewelry

- Don¡¯t panic. Rapid response is important, but panicking can interfere with the process of helping your pet.
- Take 30 to 60 seconds to safely collect and have at hand any material involved. This may be of great benefit to your vet and/or APCC toxicologists, as they determine what poison or poisons are involved. In the event that you need to take your pet to a local veterinarian, be sure to take the product¡¯s container with you. Also, collect in a sealable plastic bag any material your pet may have vomited or chewed.

- If you witness your pet consuming material that you suspect might be toxic, do not hesitate to seek emergency assistance, even if you do not notice any adverse effects. Sometimes, even if poisoned, an animal may appear normal for several hours or for days after the incident.

Call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center

The telephone number is (888) 426-4435. There is a $60 consultation fee for this service.

Be ready with the following information:
- the species, breed, age, sex, weight and number of animals involved
- the animal¡¯s symptoms
- information regarding the exposure, including the agent (if known), the amount of the agent involved and the time elapsed since the time of exposure.

Have the product container/packaging available for reference.

Please note: If your animal is having seizures, losing consciousness, is unconscious or is having difficulty breathing, telephone ahead and bring your pet immediately to your local veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic. If necessary, he or she may call the APCC.

Be Prepared
Keep the telephone number of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center¡ª(888) 426-4435¡ªas well as that of your local veterinarian, in a prominent location.

Invest in an emergency first-aid kit for your pet. The kit should contain:
- a fresh bottle of hydrogen peroxide, 3 percent USP (to induce vomiting)
- a turkey baster, bulb syringe or large medicine syringe (to administer peroxide)
- saline eye solution
- artificial tear gel (to lubricate eyes after flushing)
- mild grease-cutting dishwashing liquid (for bathing an animal after skin contamination)
- forceps (to remove stingers)
- a muzzle (to protect against fear- or excitement-induced biting)
- a can of your pet¡¯s favorite wet food
-a pet carrier

Always consult a veterinarian or the APCC for directions on how and when to use any emergency first-aid item.

Play Night Tonight!

by DogTown (no login)

From 6-8pm or anywhere in between, you can join your dog in a playdate with their friends! It's just $5 per hour per dog. We will have a separate area for small/calm dogs with plenty of things for them to do too without getting caught in the chaos of the crazy kids:) Dogs that haven't been to DogTown are welcome too, but you must bring vaccine records showing DHLPP(or equivalent), Rabies and Bordatella. We hope to see you tonight!!

Dog parks

by (no login)

Hello. I and my dog Draper are new to Dogtown, excited about all the offerings available for my very social GSD. We moved from Ptld to Gresham 2 yrs ago; am wondering why no off-leash dog parks, or if you know of any plans for this? I've emailed "askGresham," their only rec was the "wonderful dog parks available in Portland?" Laura

Re: Dog parks

by DogTown (no login)

A lot of people have contacted the City of Gresham and asked the same question. We are usually told it is a funding issue. The parks that are located near the Gresham area would be on 174th and Hagg (just off Powell) and the one located in Rooster Rock State Park, which are not fenced, and the fenced in park located in Happy Valley.

Most often we have many people who do not pick up after their dogs in all the other parks which kind of ruins it for the people who are responsible, therefore, many places are not eager to encourage an off-leash dog park for fear of the feces issue.

Dog Park in Troutdale

by Anonymous (no login)

Near Thousand Acres is the Lewis and Clark Park. They have some nice trails that the dogs like to run on, and have an offleash exercise area in the back of the park. It's a nice place in the summer. It's dark and creepy in the winter. =(

My Dogs Live Here

by DogTown (no login)

My dogs live here, they're here to stay.
You don't like pets, be on your way.
They share my home, my food, my space-
this is their home, this is their place.

You will find dog hair on the floor,
they will alert you're at the door.
They may request a little pat,
a simple "No" will settle that.

It gripes me when I hear you say
"Just how is it you live this way?
They smell, they shed, they're in the way.."
Who asked you? is all I can say.

They love me more than anyone,
my voice is like the rising sun.
They merely have to hear me say
"C'mon, time to go and play!"

Then tails wag and faces grin,
they bounce and hop and make a din.
They never say 'No time for you',
they're always there, to GO and DO.

And if I'm sad, they're by my side;
and if I'm mad, they circle wide;
and if I laugh, they laugh with me;
they understand, they always see.

So once again,
I say to you come visit me, but know this too:

My dogs live here, they're here to stay.
You don't like pets, be on your way.
They share my home, my food, my space-
this is their home, this is their place.

Another good show weekend!

by Stacy (no login)

Albany was good, the dogs handled being in a dirt floor barn in a way to make their people proud.

Cindy and Harley did an awesome job getting his first Novice Obedience leg on Sunday and his Rally Novice Title! He came in 2nd place in Obedience and 4th in Rally. Way to go Cindy-all the hard work and practice you put in with him really shows.

Maddy was brave and managed 3 dogs in the ring, not at the same time of course:) She walked away with Jax's first official Rally Novice qualifying score and Athena's second one. Not bad considering there were birds in the barn and that wonderful smelling dirt every time they did a down. Jax was listed as a miniture Schnauzer in the catalog, but that didn't faze him and he walked tall for a little dog;)!

Anne-Marie and Jewel did an awesome job on Saturday, coming in 2nd place in the Rally Novice ring. Then she finished up a long, tough Sunday by getting her 3rd leg and Rally Novice Title! It was a thrill for a dog who has always been sensitive and not always eager to work. She did great and between her and Jax, they did the Staffy's proud!

Storm got her first leg on Saturday and if you ever think that you can't do this, ask to see the tape of her performance on Sunday. If she can do it, anyone can! Midway through the course, she decided we were done and it was time to box:0 After a couple well placed punches to my stomach, she decided (with a firm hint from mom) that maybe we weren't done and then continued on halfway behaved until we left the ring. Guess we'll be in Albany again in March!

Hmmm... I wonder what Tony would like for his birthday?

Is there anything that he particularly likes?
Is there anything that he particularly shouldn't have?
