package vs. components?

July 30 2009 at 7:57 PM

I am an angler looking to get into fly fishing, and realize its not the cheapest sport to get into, but also there are affordable options out there. I would mostly be starting by fishing spring creeks and small streams, but would like a rod that's versatile and woul allow me to fish different types of waters. I have looked on ebay and looked @ the sporting goods websites. My question is if i buy one of the cheaper packages from cabela's or the like will I wish I had bought myself a little nicer setup. In which case I could continue to scour ebay for a nicer used rod and get the components to go with it. I'm not opposed to doing so if I will only want a bit nicer rod in a year or two anyways. Any experienced anglers opinions would be appreciated. Overall looking for a 5wt 8'-8.5' setup.

Yup, fly is not as cheap as brethren lure & bait fishing. Fly fishing outfits with component selection, i.e. reel, flyline, etc. offer the ability to purchase low-end products of high-end gear. You could not go wrong with such a setup; modest cost offering the chance of resale of major brand after establishing ability and gear choice. It will probably be more fun fishing aswell. You get what you pay for, usually. In the end, it's about getting out and playing...for me =)
