I must say I only recently came across this forum. It has been real interesting reading.
I was thinking about buying a new Ruger pistol something like a 22-45 and putting a red dot sight on it. I am a big 45 fan but I wanted something that is cheaper to feed.
I have a Ruger Mark 1 target model that I have had for 23 years.
No modifications have been made to my pistol.
The trigger has only 1/6 inch of play in it and around a 2 lb pull.
This pistol shoots very good even with open sights
I gave 50 dollars for it used. This pistol has been bomb proof so far.
My problem now is after reading quite a few posts I am not sure I want a newer model.
There is post after post about jamming. What’s up with this?
My Mark 1 has never jammed on me in all the years I have owned it.
And yes I shoot all kinds of different 22 ammo in it.
I as of the last few years have been shooting mostly Federal ammo from Wal-Mart.
There is post after post about trigger replacement.
What is Ruger putting in their pistols now? Are the new triggers junk?
There are a lot of posts about damaging the Mark 2 pistols just by dry firing them.
I just don’t understand it.
I have snapped my pistol on an empty chamber a whole lot of times in 23 years.
On a Mark 1 if you mess up in counting your rounds it snaps on number 10.
The cleaning of the newer pistols takes on a new light in this form.
I was an Armorer in the US Air Force and I have cleaned thousands of weapons so I know how to clean a weapon. Even so, I have been cleaning my Mark 1 wrong for years.
All I do with it is give it a good bore cleaning. Spray some cleaner in the works like WD 40. I then blow it out with air and lightly oil it with some thing like 3 in One oil.
I always wipe the gun off before putting it up with a clean rag with a light coat of oil.
This method of shoot, clean, and store has been good for a long time.
My father always said, “If it’s not broken don’t fix it.”
I must be getting old so I may have to fix two things.
One- I might put a red dot sight on my Old Mark 1 if I can figure out which red dot sight will last as long and hold up as will as my pistol has.
Two- I may have to work on counting to nine a little better.
I hope I was not too long in the tooth.
Thanks,
Vanguard
