Don't Get Scammed Into "Free Trial Issue!" Mags

by

I had a bad experience last year myself. Was online and I got one of those "Free Trial Issue!" pop-ups for a magazine. Well, stupid me, I signed up for it. It said free, right? And there was a disclaimer that I owed them nothing, if I did not like it, I had to do nothing and owed them nothing.

I got the magazine, just like they promised. Then I go the expected letter asking me to purchase it. I read everything to make sure I wasn't supposed to send it in marked "cancelled." Nothing.

A month later, I received a nasty letter from a collection agency stating that I had been recieving this magazine for a year and had not paid the bill!?!

After numerous calls to the publisher, the magazine, and the collection agency (all of whom directed me to one of the other), I gave up. I sent a letter to the state attorney generals office, consumer fraud division.

They didn't have any more luck than I did. After their letters were ignored, the A.G. office sent the publisher a court summons for failing to cooperate. Suddenly everyone wanted to talk to me! The publisher finally admitted they had made a mistake and agreed to drop everything.

Needless to say, I'll never read RIFLESHOOTER magazine again.
