Solow Mounts - where to buy them?
by Big Bad Mojo
does anybody know where i can buy these mounts on the internet or locally? i live in san jose, ca. i tried using the order line at www.solow.com but it's been disconnected. thanks!
Well, I tried to post the pic and it just gives a link that goes to another page from Cabellas so here is the link to the cabellas page with the Tripple K:
The falling plates shoot is at 10 am on Sunday at western wayne county conservation assoc. It is open to the public and costs $4.00 for non-members. It runs until 3 pm. For more info, you can go to their website at www.wwcca.com. They have one the 4th sunday of every month.
I just gat a call late last evening from the Outdoor Pistol Chairman. I'm a member out there and just didn't want to send you on a wild goose chase. I haven't shot plates since the warm weather left. Guess I should have called the office instead of going to the Chairman. Will I see you there? I'll email you also.
In 1977 I watched a buddy "torture test" a brand new mk2. threw it in the sand at the river with a full mag and the bolt open, kicked sand over it, dug it out, shook it out, racked a round, gave it a "bolt assist" with the heel of his hand and squeezed of 10 rounds with nary a hiccup. we shot a couple more boxes, no stovepipes, no nothing. went bang every time. I wanted one ever since. Yesterday i bought a barely used one along with winchester, remington and federal ammo. it ate the win. ammo with 2 fte`s, the remington with 1 ftf and a couple fte`s. the federal ammo caused over 50% fte. My question is for oldtimers who have owned older and newer mk2`s- did they just build them better back then? Perhaps the tolerances were a bit looser? This is the first ruger i have owned that i wasn`t thrilled with. thanks for your comments.
I am a "youngfeller", I guess. I have only had my MK II since October. But I do have a possible reason for your problem. If your gun was "barely used," it might not be broken in yet. I was told by members of this forum not to worry about any feeding/extraction/firing problems until I had a brick or two of high velocity (breaks the gun in better) ammo through my gun. For me it only took a box or two until I stopped having any trouble that wasn't caused by the ammo.
If you get some more rounds through your gun and are still having trouble, and you are sure it isn't a cleaning issue or something, you should give Ruger a call. Their customer service is excellent, and used or not, they would probably let you sent it to them to be tuned up for no charge.
I recently bought a Mark II and also noticed that there were several jams of one type or another when I first started to shoot it. I did notice that the failures became less the more I shot it. Now after many rounds it seems as reliable as my Old Mark I, which rarely ever fails.
You can get a BSA RD30 for around $33. Their inexpensive but you'll also have to factor in the cost for a scope mount. There's several no-gunsmithing versions available that will run you between $30 - $50. Just depends on what you want for your gun.
This is the first time I've posted to this forum. I have been reading for a couple of weeks (I started at page 111 and worked forward). I've learned alot and wanted to say "thank you" to everyone who posted.
Happy to hear you've enjoyed the wealth of knowledge deposited here over the years on this forum. Please allow me the opportunity to cordially invite you to the new home of the Ruger Mark II & 22/45 Forum as eventually this website will be transferred to the new location.
It is cycled by gas. It it a blow back design. The bolt is delayed from opening due to the weight of the bolt itself and the brass sticking to the chamber.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask them here, I will do my best to answer them.
You others are getting a little rude with telling people to go to the other site. People probally dont want to go there because nobody is there, its a ghost town. Probally better off sending them a site that is active like www.rimfirecentral.com.
It is a link to a thread on this site. It tells about how J. Adams decided to move this forum to a better provider. It is not Rimfire Addicts. I am not trying to steal members from this forum, I am trying to direct them to the new home of this forum. Most of our forum members no longer check this site.
I asked J. Adams earlier this evening to post something at the top of the page with a link to the new site. Hopefully that will happen soon.
The new site is very nice, it has a link to click that shows you all of the new posts since your last visit, and it even has a search engine.
Bud, please post your question there. Bullseye and all of the rest of the old gang is there and post regularly. I could be wrong with my recoil answer. I am pretty sure the same question has been asked on this board before and that was the answer, but maybe I am confused.
The cycling of the bolt in a Mark II pistol is due to both gas and recoil forces being exerted on the pistol.
It is a blowback design as are most semiautomatic rimfire pistols. This just means that the bolt isn't locked and held into place by a set of locking lugs (like a M-1911). Since the Mark II doesn't have a gas piston it isn't technically a gas operated weapon. Also, since the barrel is fixed and cannot move, it isn't strictly recoil operated one either. However, the forces of recoil play a part in cycling the bolt of the Mark II, since this recoil force is actually created by the backward pressure generated from the expanding cartridge gasses forcing the projectile forward down the barrel. So, these two forces act hand-in-hand to overcome the recoil spring tension and operate the Mark II bolt, thereby ejecting the empty cartridge casing.
To be a strictly gas operated action, it would need a certain amount of escaping gas to be syphoned off and sent rearward through a tube or vent to operate a gas piston, which in-turn cycles the bolt mechanically (like an M-14). Another form of gas operated action doesn't use a piston but the bolt has the piston feature built-in to it and is directly cycled by the vented hot gasses(like an M-16).
To be a stricly recoil operated pistol, the barrel would have to move and break free of a set of locking lugs, which holds the breech closed and the empty cartridge in place until after the projectile has cleared the barrel muzzle (again, like the M-1911).
Here's some useful definitions at the end of this post, to help validate the information I've provided.
Hope this helps,
R,
Bullseye
RECOIL OPERATION: Method of operating an automatic of semi-automatic firearm by making use of the force of recoil due to firing a bullet from the barrel. The barrel recoils under this force, and this rearward movement can be used to cycle the action, ejecting the spent cartridge and reloading the firearm.
RECOIL: The rearward motion or "kick" of a gun upon firing. Recoil in shooting, is the practical effect of Newton's Third Law of Motion: for every action there is and opposite and equal reaction. Recoil is typically explained in 3 separate terms: Generated Recoil; Physical Recoil; and Anticipated Recoil. For more information on recoil see the information block below.
GENERATED RECOIL: The amount of force exerted on the firearms action, stock or grip. The factors affecting this force are the charge or amount and type of powder in the cartridge and the weight of the projectile. The internal pressure is created by the rapidly expanding gasses that are created when the solid propellant or gun powder ignites and turns into a gas. The only way to modify the amount of force is to reduce the charge or the bullet weight. Generated recoil is a constant if all variable are left unchanged.
BLOWBACK: A type of semiautomatic or fully automatic gun design in which there is no mechanical locking of the bolt. Instead, the breech is held closed only by the weight and inertia of the bolt, with some slight assistance from the recoil spring, until the bullet leaves the muzzle. Classic examples of the blowback semiautomatic pistol designs are found in the Browning series of pocket-sized pistols in .25, .32 and .380 calibers as well as the famous Walther PP and PPK series of handguns. Nearly all successful submachine guns, including the popular Uzi and Ingram or MAC 10's as well as the HK MP5 family, use the blowback action. 2. A gun malfunction in which the powder gases escape rearward and into the action.
GAS OPERATION: A method of operating an automatic or semi-automatic firearm by diverting some of the propelling gas behind the bullet into a cylinder where it drives a piston. This piston is connected to the firearm's bolt and, under gas pressure, extracts the empty case and loads a fresh round. Alternatively, the gas can be channeled so as to strike the bolt or bolt carrier directly and thus move it.
GAS OPERATED: A type of firearm design commonly found on semi-automatic rifles, where propellant gas is used in a manor that cycles the action. The most common type of gas operated firearms are the AR-15 / M-16 family of rifles.
With special thanks to the Gunnery Network for this reference information.
I wouldnt worry about it. I have sanded, used a router, drilled, and tapped several grip frames with no problems. They are great once you have installed 1911 .45 grips on them.
Can the average user remove the trigger from a Mark II target pistol? I would like to attempt to adjust the trigger screw, but I don't know how to get the pin out. Can anyone advise?
At the top of the page is a link "Diss/Reassemble for internals" that gives detailed instructions and pictures. The site was created by forum member, Yzguy.
We have pretty much moved our forum to a new location:
Sorry, I've been tied up. The match is Apr 27, Sunday. It's at Western Wayne County Conservation Association (that's a mouth full!) What I'm trying to find out if it's still open to the public. It's usually the last Sunday of the month. Problem is they'er trying to make it a league that runs May through August. I don't think it's a problem, but I want to make sure I don't lie to you. As soon as the chairman replys to me I'll get the info and directions to you.m You'll have a ball.
My Mark I's bull barrel is .870" down the length as measured by a Mitutoyo Dial Caliper. I suspect calibration is the reason for the deviations noted in the responses.
Can anyone help me with advice or info on whether the Clark pins will even fit AND improve the functioning of my Mk I? I'm using the Vol. sear and trigger now.
I'm the proud owner of a new/used Ruger MKll stainless, bull barrel. The previous owner had a gunsmith drill, tap and install a Tasco scope rail. This rail is 13/16" wide and the mounting holes are different than my 5/8" weaver rail.
Anybody have an idea what Red Dot will fit this?
The other thread is getting kind of long and disorganized. I would like to start a new one and try to get a good, organized outline form going. Instead of doing one long post, I am going to do several sub-posts on different topics. Hopefully that will make it easier to find the information when I go to put things together.
I like the idea of letting people choose the distance that they want to shoot. I can add a column indicating their shooting distance.
The targets should all be Official, or reasonable copies of official, NRA Bullseye targets.
I am having trouble finding Timed/Rapid Fire targets locally. Can someone let us know where targets can be purchased over the internet?
I have created some targets based on the official ring size and colors posted in the NRA rulebook for 50', both Slow Fire and Timed/Rapid fire. They are currently in MS Word format and fit on 8.5x11" paper. I should be able to convert them to .pdf files readable with Acrobat Reader. The only problem is that the Timed/Rapid Fire target extends to within about 1/8" inch of the edge of teh page, so a small part of the outer ring probably won't print. But for our purposes, we should be able to tell whether to score it as a 6 or a miss. I would post these files on the web site, or send by e-mail if the web site is not available in time.
I would be happy to post any targets that anybody would like to share.
Here are the 50 Foot Slow and Timed/Rapid Fire targets that I made. The rings are all regulation NRA sized. They are available in Acrobat format and I can post them if anyone wants to use them. The Timed/Rapid fire target is just slightly too large for my printer to handle, but I think one could tell if it whether a hit towards the right or left edge should be scored as a 6 or a miss.
i just printed the targets, they are just fine!! hopefully, i won't have to worry about the outer ring!! "some days are diamonds and some days are stone"! something like that- i think that was john denver?
thank you!
I've got some for the longer distances that someone else made, but the only problem is that an 8.5 x 11 is not large enough for most of the target. The 50 Yard Slow fire black part barely fits on the paper.
If any of you want actual targets (printed on heavier paper) I have made several purchases on-line from TJ Target in Ohio (www.tjtarget.com). I can get B-16 25 yd. slow fire's for about $0.12-.13/ea., including delivery. TJ offers a pretty good selection of targets and both of my orders were shipped very promptly.
I plan to register a domain in the next week or two. And I have asked my Wife, who has two domains and has designed several web sites, to help me create a site to post information about this league.
Some of the information I plan to post includes:
Detailed list of "rules"
Roster
Scores
Any files that would be useful
Any targets or comments the shooters would like to post regarding their shooting sessions.
Most likely anything anyone else would like to suggest.
That will be great for us to have a place to discuss our shooting without cluttering the rest of the forum up.
I would still like to create a web site to have a central location to post information, so we bon't have to wade through threads to find the information we want. Anyone disagree with this?
The point is; you can have a separate listing forum for the postal match right on the general MKII&22/45 Forum. Rimfire Central has one going on right now their site. Check it out at the link above & just below our banner, then click "goto forums."
But I am not sure that the forum can do what I have in mind. I would really like a table where you can look at one glance and see all of the competitors and all of their scores at one glance, for instance. Does that maks sense?
Maybe I am just used to how this forum gets all cluttered and disorganized. Perhaps the new forum would be better?
I guess with our own section of the forum, you wouldn't even have to e-mail your scores to me. We could start a thread called, "Week One Scores" and everybody could post their scores in it. And we could stick a thread at the top with the rules and stuff.
What do you guys think? Should I do a web site? Should we just use the forum? I really don't mind making a site, but I will do what everyone wants.
I like your idea of seeing all the scores on one organized page. It doesn't matter how this is accomplished, via a website or forum I guess. I think the ideal format would be a " chart or graph " like you have in mind, but have it so people could log on and when they post scores they would in up in the chart. Or email the scores to you, and you eneter them into the chart every week. Just my thoughts....
radar,
how about we try it on the new forum before you spend the time and effort.
- first off it will keep all of us together, when were online to discuss matches, etc.
- secondly it will give the "new veiwers" more of an incentive (so to speak) to join in. "conglomeration"
man that is a big word!! i should be in a spelling "b" what do ya think!!haha
bottom line, it will keep people from jumping back and forth. lets try it. it doesn't work or do what we need then you can exspell some of your energy?
I have been thinking about this all day and I think that we can make it work.
We could post the rules and sticky them at the top of the page.
Under the rules, we could perhaps sticky a topic called "Week one scores", maybe up to four posts at a time and people could post their scores as they get them. Then after the fourth week the scores could be collected and put together into some sort of easily readable format, posted and stickied to the top, right under the rules. The Weekly scores could then be allowed to sink and the next four weeks could be stickied to the top.
It would require a moderator to keep up with it. I would be willing to do that if J.Adams (I guess he is "Rook" on the new forum) didn't want to.
It's an old internet alias I've had for a few years, use it for almost everything.
As for the Internet Postal, I was figuring on a subforum under the Ruger MKII area. Also, I can make you a moderator of that forum to keep things up, if you wish of course. I probably won't be participating for a while and I haven't got all the time in the world right now. Let me know via PM on the new boards or through email.
it would be great to have a froum with different links such as:
- ruger repairs, Q&A, suggestions (similar to this)
- photo gallery
- shooting format, qualifing, events, etc.
- a page for matt! discussion of whatever, however, etc.
- anything else you guys can think of?
Wait let me pick myself uo off the floor....Now that's funny....lol.... I think that's the best line I've heard on this forum:)...... Matt...gotta love him though, he sure sticks to his "guns" so to speak.
Those Q/A or FAQ would be easy to put in a sticky topic that hangs at the top of the page and can be edited frequently to keep it up to date. The galleries though would need to be something seperate.
i think that would work fine. having a seperate area with downloadable info, such as:installing new voquartzen trigger-replacing your grips, etc. that way any viewer could go to that area and scroll through and find the information needed.(like a manual- if you will)to get the information. keep the forum seperate for expert advise, suggestions, or just to talk ruger stuff!
this will give forum members more time enteract vs answering the same question every other week. i know several members are sporactic to the site- this will keep the repeated info from entering over & over!
thats my 2 cents
Well, new users will get two easy answers before repeating questions: a user made FAQ on the board and Rugers as well as advice to use the search engine first, especially now that we have one.
I think I would like to make it a weekly event, but allow people to shoot as many target sets in advance as they like.
Twelve weeks has been suggested, and that sounds good to me.
I was thinking of startinf with the first week in May, but perhaps we could start a little earlier. The web site may not be ready by then, though. How about if we start on Monday, May 19th and have the first scores due on Monday, May 26th?
Since I will need to receive e-mails from everyone and then update my site, I would like to request that I only receive one score per week per shooter or possibly two. I would prefer not to have to post scores retroactively. Then maybe when we total and/or average our scores we could count the highest 8 or 10 scores, and that way if someone misses a week or two, those scores can just be dropped.
that would be fine. if you want, you can send me (by e-mail the targets you have, when you get time.
i'll look on the internet for a free downloadable rapid fire target if you want? just let me know.
That's basically how it works in a league. There is a total number of possible matches, total number of required matches, and anything over the reguired is dropped. Example = 12 total matches, top 10 matches count for final score. So in this scenario, if you only shoot 10 matches, you don't get any drops. If you shoot 11, then your lowest score does not count.
so i could shoot 40 matches and keep my best ten? i like it. As i mentioned under the cci minimag heading last friday i shot a 99. Thats the best one yet!! and i was sick with sinus infection!! so i need that hadicap-i don't get sick very often!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before you shoot a target you decide that the next target that you shoot will be your, for example, 50 yard slow fire target for week 1. No matter how good or bad that target turns out, that is the target that you submit for your score.
You will submit 12 sets of targets, but for your final average, the lowest two or three or four or however many we dicide will be dropped.
Just wanted to bring up another point. We could go 12 weeks, but have 24 matches. In the indoor league's I'm involved in, we shoot 2 matches a night, once a week. I would think anyone that can make it to shoot one match, could take the time to shoot two. Really it only takes 30 minutes or less to shoot 2 matches. But, on second thought maybe less matches are better so people don't get bored? It would also be more work for Radar. I don't know, just throwing idea's out there. Nice thing is, if it works out good we could always add more mathces next time.
for me its no problem. i only get my gear out to "do some shooting"!! an afternoon of it (if you will). As you know i am a clean nut when it comes to my guns (and most other things) so i figure, if i'm going to spend 30-45 minutes cleaning, i'm gonna make it worth my while.
I think we can "sticky", maybe four posts at the top of the League Room that J.Adams has offered to make for us. These posts would be for posting your scores. One for each of the first four weeks. At the end of the four weeks, All of the scores could be compiled into one easy to read post that can then be stickied to the top for everyone to see. Then we could start over with the next four weeks.
That would give everyone a month to shoot their four matches.
If we can do this, it would remove the necesity of my posting a web site to keep track of the league. (I am not trying to get out of it, but this way would probably be easier for everyone involved.
For this first time through let's go for a 12 match season - so that any bugs we have can be worked out. Heck, I'm not going to stop shooting after 12 weeks and will probably sign up again.
Besides, since I volunteered to be the ultimate looser I may not try to block this web site from my children if my scores are not too embarassing.
sometimes it not the winning that counts!! its just having fun!!
If this is a tool i can use to spend more time with my dad, it will be the best present i can ever ask for!!
I was just reviewing some of the details we worked out and realized that I made a mistake when I suggested a date. I was thinking that this was May! But it is only April!
So the date I had in mind would be more like starting on April 28th.
I apologise for the error. Everybody let me know if April 28th is OK or if you would rather start later to have more time to get ready.
ready whenever the majority of you guys are! other than i'm tring to get my grass seed to germinate so i'm not walking through the mud to retrieve my targets!!
I don't think we need to be super regimented on this topic. People could use whatever method they are comfortable with. I tape recording would probably be ideal, but some sort of timer could probably work as well.
For those of us that don't have any experience with organized shooting, can someone post a script of the commands for us to refer to. Or maybe even Make a recording that I could distribute or post?
Radar, you must have had a problem with your setup
by Bullseye
I didn't have any problems listening to the range commands from the link you provided to Bullseye Pistol.com The directions say to play it on your machine and set up a tape recorder to record the sound. Perhaps you attempted to save the digital file and that's where the problem was.
And got a page not found error. Both times I tried it. I will check it out again. Maybe there is more than one link for it? I tried on the page: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Dreyer_infonet/ibpl.htm about three quarters of the way down the page where it says, "Download the Range Commands."
Did you get it from a different location, perhaps?
Maybe, But I used the link you posted on the "Range Commands" message you wrote earlier, which appears to be a different link than this last one you just posted.
It goes to the Bullseye Pistol main index page. Under "The Reference Room," there's a listing for "Audio Files of Range Commands" and it functions well on my computer.
I'm not sure where you picked up the link but that one is giving me the same "not found" error you saw. Why not try the other link I posted above and see if you can retrive the audio files from there.
I think one "match" per week would be sufficient. But the question is, how many points should we have a match be? I would think that the answer should be either 300, 600 or 900 points.
Each set of 300 would consist of 10 shots fired at a slow fire target, 10 shots fired at a timed fire target and 10 shots fired at a rapid fire target.
Personally I like 300, but that's only because I'm used to it. (2) 300 matches are the same as (1) 600 match. The 600 is just adding the two together. So it is the same amount of shooting. Really it doesn't make any difference. Either is fine by me. I would not be able to shoot a 900 every week though. And many others may not be able to. Many leagues only shoot a 600, and you can't shoot another practice match during a match night, so a 900 would reguire (2) trips to the range a week instead of (1)for people like me. I would do a 300 or a 600.
I did not see this brought up. Are we settling on 50' for rapid fire and 25yrds for slow fire. I shoot inside and 25 yrd is a limit. Also, as it is my skill level drops at 25 yards as it is.
I believe we settled on 50' or 25 and 50 yrds. Or any combination you normally shoot in a league. Since it is for fun. That way everyone can shoot what they are used too. PLEASE NOTE I don't think anyone will be allowed to shoot less than 50'. I'm sure Radar will verify this.
We are letting people shoot whatever distance that they like as long as they use the appropriate targets for the distance chosen.
The plan is for everyone to shoot one handed like an official bullseye shoot.
If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask, it will help get us organized. I plan to have a preliminary list of rules for everyone to look at by Saturday.
is that 1 handed one a benchrest? i probobly know what your response will be! oh, darn!!!
that will definately make it more of a challange. personally, i always shoot two handed!! can i have a handicap? oh, darn!
I have been practicing lately. And a funny thing happened last time I went shooting. I bought some official 50 yard slow fire targets and I shot once one handed at one. I scored something like an 80 or something. Then I decided to try it with two hands. I tried it twice and couldn't break 70 points!!! Usually I am a lot better with two hands.
I don't know what the deal is for sure. The only thing I can think of is that I probably take a lot more time and concentrate harder when I hold it with one hand.
If you need any tips for shooting one handed, go to http://www.bullseyepistol.com. Scroll down to the "Perfecting Technique" heading and click on the "Army Marksmanship Training Guide."
That is what should happen. When using one hand, many people don't realize there are many "negative things" that you remove from the equation. Recoil, arm movement, joint movement, all are better for "accuracy" shooting with only one hand. I can not out shoot myself with two hands. When sighting in I use a rest only to get in the ballpark, all final adjustments are made shooting one handed. Remember it's a "handgun" not a "handsgun". That's the qoute that a top bullseye shooter, told me at one of my very first trips to the range after buying my first hand gun. Been shooting one handed ever since, and loving it!
i live in melbourne fl so if anyone close is interested i have some stuff for sale.Ruger mk-512 5-1/2 bull bar.,hardley used(maybe 100 rounds)with extra clips, case for gun and clips, homak locking gun cabinet, bushnell spotting scope, riffle vise,ect.....just another hobby and stuff i had to have.this stuff is really brand new!e-mail me if interested and give me your phone number and i'll call.NOT interested in shipping
Got out today shooting for first time since last November. Went to a creek about 12 miles from home and found a spot that had melted off. Zeroed in my new Ultradot (took under ten shots to get it to dead center) and proceeded to stink up the place. Best I got was an 83 on a 40 foot slow fire with Federal Bulk, but at least I didn't have to squint like Clint Eastwood and contort my eyeballs like Reba MacIntyre to focus. Red dots really do feel like one is cheating. How high do my scores need to be to rated as better than stinky??
