Hey Rob,

Since you posted in 3 different threads I thought it would be easier to respond to you in a new one.

Reb reads these messages so he is really the best person to respond about his tone.

However, being a Reb-fanatic I can help you with what I know about his tone happy.gif

1st, Reb played on Dokken's Erase the Slate album. Jon Levin played on Lightening Strikes Again.

2nd, Reb has said many times on this forum that he uses EMGs but that he put in Dimarzios ( pretty sure ) for the Dokken years to get closer to Lynch's tone.

3rd, Voyager vs. Suhr. Reb mentioned in his Homegrown DVD that he used Voyagers predominantly for their low end. They have a mahogany body with a Koa top whereas the Suhr's are all Koa.

4th, the amp. To get Reb's current tone it does make sense to get the amp he uses which is the OD-100SE+. I have tried to show in my clip how close it sounds to the Winger IV tone.

5th, EMGs combined with tuning down 1 whole step are larger factors in how Reb sounds ( IMO )

6th, no matter how much equipment I own I will never be able to play like Reb. LOL

7th, my experiences with the Suhr model. This guitar from a playability standpoint is unmatched. Its just a fantastically engineered instrument.

8th, I would probably be willing to sell the Voyager but Javier really wants it and I'm going to give him a chance to complete a trade.

Conclusion, a Suhr RB model loaded with EMGs plus the OD100 will get you as close as possible to Reb's current tone.

Hope this helps.

Alex

One other thing...I purchased my OD100 from MattsMusic.com.

You can email Matt at sales@mattsmusic.com.

I don't like publishing pricing because prices change.

Peace

To chime in, I'm under the impression that most recordings have been done with the trusty old Pensa/Suhr.

embarrassment

December 30 2008, 5:42 PM

Hi Alex, I am feeling so stupid after your post as I have been on a quest for the last 3 weeks to track down the awesome guitarist that played on lightning strikes again album, the songs lyrics and musicianship on that album left me obssessed to the point that I've played that album everyday for 2months and do not get sick of it.

I found info on a website and the search began for the guitarist and obviously due to the site not stipulating which album reb played on I got my wires crossed and found reb, idolised him, and wanted the gear he plays with,I now am left wondering what gear he would have used had he actually been the player on the lightning album.

Having said all that I still think I'm on to something good with the od100 amp and the suhr guitar but of course will now go searching for jon levins setup.

I would still love to hear from reb regarding how close he would be to the sound of that album with his gear, hoping he reads this, and by the way alex you sound great on the clip, those dirty power chords, hope to be able to play them soon.cheers rob

Hey is Matts Music in NYC?

I just saw a comedy sketch on TV and they were using a music store called "Matts Music"

comparison rebs suhr vs levin's charval

December 30 2008, 9:12 PM

Hi again Alex, thanx for not flaming me for the misinformation I got, seems like a great forum, can I ask it's members and Reb if he's reading, how his suhr would compare in sound to whatever jon levin is using, I think it's either a guitar called a jester hand made by a guy called gajic guitars, whose website isn't working, or a strat charval,if they both were used with the custom od100 amp, hyperthetical I know but I would be interested in veiwpoints as info is very hard to come by on jon levins gear.Cheers Rob

Re: tuning

Rob,

Tune all of your strings down 1 whole step. Then tune your 6th string to equal your 4th string. That will give you "Drop D Tuning" a whole step down from regular pitch.

Hope that makes sense!

Peace

Alex

Rob,

I have the OD-100SE+. It is supposed to be the model with the highest gain on channel 2. There are several different models and its really hard for me to say what the differences are because these amps are not sold in stores.
Your best bet is too just do research online. Look on YouTube. There is a forum on the Suhr website where you can ask these type of questions. Also, http://www.hugeracksinc.com is a great place to post because Suhr answers people frequently over there.

Peace

Hi guys¡¡

Well... nothing more to say. Alex make a great explanation.. WOW¡¡¡

Only some comment to Rob about the amps... Reb as you probably know was using Marshall 1976 modofoed heads for a long time. This heads basically will provide you the Reb´s tone in songs like the one he plays in the Dokken era. They are not quite expensive and you could may be able to find one in good condition for around 100-1200 dollars. The bad thing in my opinion, well.. not so bad.. is that probably you will need to bring the amp to tech for some modifications on the gain of the amp and rebiased.
Also you have a couple of chances depending what you want to get as your sound.... You have new Cameron amps providing you a great 80´s hard rock tone. Also old Laney AOR heads are really nice jard rock sound. This rwo opnes are keeping very similar features and sounds as Maeshalls JCM series, really warm and clean tones but with more gain on the distortion perfect to rock in hell. NOt the kind of such modern distortion for playing new metal genres like Soldano or Mesa but enough for evrrything else.
On the otehr side OD100 from Custom Audio Amps peovide you in my opinion a more brown and dark power sound ala Mesa or high gain amps.

So depedning what you looking for here you have it... this are only my two cents.

Cheers¡¡

Javier

PS: Cameron amps were the develop of Mark Cameron´s personal amps after a big time becomeing popular making Maeshall amps modifications.
