Although only 16, Daniel is the brilliant criminal mastermind behind a hugely successful Ponzi scheme. He not only hoodwinked the directors, team owners, coaches and managers of the OMHA out of their life savings, he fleeced most of the GTHL folks as well. All this during while playing elite minor midget AAA hockey. He is currently living at large in his Honduras mansion, a country which has no extradition agreement with Canada. He may have swindled the Soo brass as well...story to continue...

For those of you who are internet impaired, the Cat is safe & sound playing for the Soo Greyhounds. The Soo has played 2 games and he has played in both as per the following.

http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/player.php?id=5453

Regular Season Stats
Season Team GP G A PTS +/- PIM
2009-10 Regular Season Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 2 0 1 1 0 2

It's obvious many of the posts in this thread are in jest, pretty funny ones at that, however it appears there's some folks out there that are really clueless.

Hey buddy, the kid is in the OHL not in midget hockey like u. Only jealous midget parents and players come on this site to put down others that have moved on to play junior hockey.

This is not intended as a slant toward midget hockey and players.

From what I know he is playeing for the Soo Greyhounds, and 1 assist in 2 games, If I am not mistaken Cousins has 4 points in the same 2 games. The fans in the Soo are quite critical and if Daniel dosen't put up some points soon there will be some very dissapointed fans and management, and they won't hold back on their critism of the 1st overall pick, they can be pretty critical of their players that arn't producing. I bet that Daniel won't last until Christmas in the Soo.

Cousins is the real deal. He actually played, contributed and improved during his minor midget year. Good thing for Soo that they had a second pick in the first round. Cat lived off his bantam results and then disappeared during all the key tournaments in minor midget but still kept pumping his tires throughout the year including the stupid banter on this site.

At the end of this season there will be no where else to hide and no more time.

Were you at the game yesterday???

Catenacci hasn't been putting the points up, however he's a better player than Cousins. PERIOD.

Cat is a far superior skater, has excellent vision of the ice, wins physical battles along the boards and is a 2 way player.

Cousins is very dangerous down low, however he doesnt pick up his defensive assignment and isn't very effective in his own end.

In regards to the depth chart, you have no clue. GM Dave Torrie just sent the team's top centre home, so Cat now centres the first line and is on the first line PP as well.

When Cat starts finding the back of the net you'll have nothing else to beak about.

Re: where is Catenacci

Sept 23/09 3:11, by your statement "wait a month and see" arn't the rest of the rookies going to get better in a month, so how does a month help Daniel? If he developes good for him, but no matter how you say it, he is struggling right now, and for the person who is defending his play and critizing Cousins, unfortunatly a player is as valuable as the points he gets and not for his play behind the play. Anyone that knows anything about HOCKEY will tell you that points are the first thing that is looked at when evaluating a player (no matter how unfair that is), so 1 point in 3 games is not very good especially for a first overall pick, and 5 points for Cousins in 3 games is looking pretty good, To the person that stated that the first line center was sent home and is implying that it was to make room for Daniel on the first line, you are full of s--t, the player that was sent home had nothing to do with Daniel, so stop trying to make Daniel out to be something he isn't, the stats speak for themselves, or in this case lake of them.

2:55, you're a stats clown. they mean nothing 3 games in. only a buffoon would say that Cousins is a better player. 4 months ago 20 teams took a pass on Cousins in the first round. so you know better??? this is exactly the same shyte that was spewed early on of mcfarland, gagner, etc. re: Michael Fine, i was making the point as to the depth of the team at centre (depth was the previous poster's point) > please s h o w me where i said Fine was sent home to make room for Cat???

Re: where is Catenacci

By your won statement you have IMPLIED that he was sent home to make room for Daniel, by mentioning them in the same sentence, I am trying to figure out why you would even mention the player sent home, if not for that reason. And to clear up something, I have been around Hockey for 18 years and have gained some knowledge, and it is a proven fact that POINTS are refered to in the assesment of any player, 1 point in 3 games is not great, and after a month of conditioning and adjustment he might find the back of the net, but don't forget after a month all of the other rookies will also improve, and adjust, so right know although hard to swallow, Daniel is not looking like a first overall pick.

Re: where is Catenacci

4:04, implied?? more like you assumed. you just proved what happens when you assume - i'll spare everyone the anectdotal word play.

fact: with Fine gone, Cat goes up in the centre position depth chart. what don't you understand about this??? finally, using CAPS and blithering on about it, is simply being argumentative to save face.

re: your "18 years of hockey knowledge", i can say i have more than you (and i do!), and like every other hot shot, ex-jock here that i was a knee/ankle/wrist injury away from making the show, yada, yada, yada ad nauseum. this amounts to jack squat on an anonymous forum.

stats do indeed mean something, however you are way too premature with your conclusions. i asked you how McFarland did last year. you either chose to ignore me, or you don't know shinola. fact: 7 games in, mcfarland had 1 point last year ... this year he will be selected within the top 15 of the NHL draft.

in terms of your astute: "1 month from now all rookies will be better", this is a meaningless generalization. most players improve. although it's far from being a linear thing as you make it out to be - some get better then plateau, some get better then really take-off ala mcfarland, gagner and countless other slow starters. based on what i saw last night, i choose the latter for the Cat.

it's always refresing to find 'knowledgeable hockey people' who draw conclusions & assess players based on desk analysis, rather than first hand evidence.

Oh and one more thing, just because you are drafted number 1 to the OHL dosen't mean you will be drafted to the NHL there are several top players in Minor Midget (or what was formally Bantam) that have not gone onto the AHL/NHL, and he is a tad small for the NHL, and that's one thing Mommy and Daddy can't fix.

Don't care if you are not a Cat lover or not. First of all the kid, pound for pound the strongest out there. My son had played with Dan for a few years until last season and have watched enough games to know. Don't like the dad's coaching style? The man has develops players, he has 6 players that are currently signed and playing in the OHL this season from our minor midget team. This is AMAZING and my kid isn't one of them. The kid is humble and one of the nicest kids around. You have a problem and it's called JEALOUSY. Me thinks you are the moderator of this forum that has a hard-on for this great player and his father. I read all your shit last season and you wouldn't let up. They don't read this crap and the only ones who do are us poor bastards that have to play another year of midget. Dan was the #1 pick and it burns your ass!

reading all this stuff makes me want to comment, the statements regarding stats or lack of them is true, example, the Rookie of the year in the OHL is given to the rookie with the highest number of points in his rookie season, in the NHL the rookie of the year is given to the rookie with the highest number of points, points acheived are the benchmark for determining a players worth, so who ever said it dosen't matter, it would seem knows nothing about the evaluation of a player. I don't think that anyone really cares about this so called Cat, where he plays, where he goes or where he ends up, the problem here is the fact that the parents and followers boosted this kid to be the next great one, and that my friends will never happen. Lets enjoy the season and see what transpires.

This is a learning year for all those 16 year old kids playing against men in the OHL. Give it a rest! All of them should be proud of just being on an OHL roster at 16. You have a problem when you have to come on this site and bash these kids in order to feel good about yourself or your son's short comings.
I might add that it's pretty amazing that 6 kids from one minor midget team were developed and are playing in the OHL. Winning and developing are two different things.

Nancy is the kid's mother who doesn't have to come on this midget site unlike the poor angry soul who continues to bash a kid that at 16 years of age is playing in the OHL against men. Who ever you are that contiueously keeps bashing this kid should seek help. You don't know a thing about hockey and need some help to deal with the shortcomings of your own or those of your son's. Also, for your information the top player up for the NHL draft this year did not have a goal until his 11th OHL game. The top scorer at the present time also did not score until his 12th game not that it means anything. The fact is that this kid is developing by playing on a team that hasn't lost in 10 games, 5 exhibition and 5 regular season. He has scored in a shootout win and continues to develop. I follow these kids and wish them all well. Go Danny boy and the rest of the 93s in the OHL!

6:16, i too agree with the main content of your message.

However regarding the upcoming NHL draft, the current leading scorer in the O will go #1 overall and scored 2 goals in first game as a rookie.

As for Cat, the stats are meaningless right now. I watched him play against the Petes and the 67's. Baring serious injury or falling off the face of the planet, he will NOT go any lower than the 2nd round of the 2011 NHL draft.

Canadian Hockey League Embraces Drug Education & Anti-Doping Policy Program

Toronto, ON -- The Canadian Hockey League (CHL) announced today that it was entering into an agreement with the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) to develop and adopt a CHL Drug Education & Anti-Doping Policy. The adoption of such a policy would be the first step in the implementation of a comprehensive drug education & anti-doping program that would apply to all three leagues in the CHL: Western Hockey League (WHL); Ontario Hockey League (OHL); and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The QMJHL has been running a similar pilot program since 2004.

"We have a responsibility to our players and the Canadian public," stated David Branch, CHL President and Commissioner of the Ontario Hockey League. "The CHL strongly believes that the health and safety of our players is vital to maintaining a strong and vibrant league that is doping free."

"The QMJHL policy has clearly demonstrated the positive effect an anti-doping program can have on our sport." Mr. Branch said. "This is a model that we believe we should be embracing, a model that focuses on education and provides our players with the tools to make the right decisions." The new CHL Drug Education & Anti-Doping Policy will replace the current QMJHL policy.

While the policy will reside outside of the Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP), it will see the CCES test for the full range of substances found on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. As well, any players who commit an anti-doping rule violation will be listed on the CCES violations registry. This list is shared with WADA. Those players on the CCES violations registry would then be subject to the World Anti Doping Code compliant CADP when involved in sport outside of the CHL. This would include being prohibited from playing hockey or any other sport at the university, college, or Olympic level for Canada. As a CHL player, depending on the substance, the league is looking at five to ten game sanctions for first violations.

"We're putting together educational materials for the players in anticipation of starting testing in January 2007," said WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. "Parents and billets of CHL players will be provided with extensive resource information and materials. No testing will occur until all athletes have gone through the education program."

The QMJHL worked with the CCES to develop and implement its anti-doping policy and program in 2004. The program focused on education, detection, and deterrence. In two years of operating with an anti-doping policy in place, 60 tests have been conducted. There was only one positive result during that period.

"Our focus was on education and deterrence," said Gilles Courteau, Commissioner of the QMJHL. "We believe that the combination of education and testing sends a clear message to our players that there is no place for doping in sport." Mr. Courteau went on to praise the CHL for its proactive commitment towards the development and adoption of an anti-doping program for all of the leagues.

The CCES will work with the CHL to develop and implement its anti-doping policy and program. The CCES will provide a full education program and will implement all aspects of testing. As an independent, ISO certified, national anti-doping agency, the CCES will ensure that the CHL program will be administered in an open and transparent fashion to ensure public confidence and to eliminate the vested interests that often undermine the credibility of in-house programs.

"We believe that the CHL and its leagues are demonstrating tremendous leadership in protecting their sport and the health and safety of their players," commented Mr. Paul Melia, President and CEO of the CCES.

The CCES is committed to working with developmental and professional leagues across the country in order to assist them with the implementation of anti-doping programs for their league. "We believe that by working with leagues, such as the CHL, bringing anti-doping programs to the developmental level and ultimately the professional levels," stated Mr. Melia, "we can have a positive impact on Canada's domestic drug education & anti-doping program."

The CCES is a non-profit organization which promotes ethical sport for all Canadians through research, promotion, education, detection and deterrence. The CCES conducts many of these programs through partnerships with other organizations.

It looks like Cousins has been doing what Cousins dose best "CHIRPPING". On that video, it appears that that he chirpped the wrong guy and now talks out the other side of his mouth because of the fat lip. My guess is that there will be many more of those before he learns to keep his BIG mouth shut.

Yep, two rookie centres playing on the first two lines of the Greyhounds, a team thats 5-0 and 10-0 if you count exhibition. Thats amazing! These two kids have contributed to the early success of the Greyhounds as we hear on the OHL website from their coach Denny Lambert. So stop chirping both of these kids as I only wish my son was in eithers shoes.

Momma bear, you do not multiple/flood post the St. Mike's thread. Only the "where is Catenacci" and "where is the 1st overall..." threads.

It's obvious you're too close to these Soo kids. You are doing way more harm than good with your flood of BS fluff posts. You are simply portraying them as divas and riling people up against them.

They have enough knowledgeable, articulate supporters, so go away and bake some cookies.

Three points is not four Four points, if you want to boost at least be accurate. Maybe part of his success is having strong players to play with and to help him along the way off the ice. Credit where credit is due.

Maybe credit should also go to Daniel himself. This kid (rookie) at 16 has played against the top lines in every OHL game he has played so far. He was put up against the hottest player in the league the other night and was first star of the game with 3 points. The previous night got 2 points and was second star. Whoever the jealous person costantly bashing him is please give your head a shake and try reading all the write-ups in the papers quoting his coach Lambert or GM Torrie.

Great job Daniel!

How does someone misstating facts boggle your mind? The team is doing well, his line is doing well, he has his first goal after 7 games of first line play, he appears to be doing well. No one wins by them self. Cousins is playing great as is Vern Cooper. Livingston is anchoring the line as he should as a big veteran just returned from an NHL camp.

Why bother defending the kid, if morons want to post negative crap let them, it is only you fanning the fire that keeps them going. The kid is doing fine. Hey, what about 92 born Tyler Seguin, now there is a story.

Re: Catenacci & Cousins Doing Great!

October 5 2009, 4:23 PM

This is for the D.C jealous jerk-off.

Sault Star:

Linemates Daniel Catenacci and James Livingston joined Muzzin and netminder Robin Lehner as standouts for the home team Saturday.

Catenacci, the first player taken in this year's draft, scored the first goal of his OHL career and assisted on two others. Livingston also notched a goal and two assists while Muzzin scored once, set up another and anchored the Hounds defence.

Though he didn't face a lot of quality chances, Lehner was again strong, blanking the Whalers until Tyler Seguin scored his 11th goal of the season, a power-play marker at 18:16 of the final period.

Matched against Seguin, the league's leading scorer, and wingers Tyler G. Brown and Myles McCauley, the line of Catenacci between Livingston and Tomas Rachunek played brilliantly at both ends of the ice.

Going head-to-head with

Seguin, Catenacci admitted, was a challenge he welcomed.

"We were lined up against that line all night and we had to worry about them scoring," the speedy rookie said. "We kept him (Seguin) down until the end and we ended up getting offensive success while defending him."

"Challenging him (Catenacci), drives him," added Lambert, whose club held a 33-29 edge in shots. "He played so well tonight (Saturday) with tons of energy."

"We're working so hard as a line," said Livingston. "We have a good combination of speed and grit and we're jelling as a line."

Catenacci beat the Whalers netminder to the blocker side and was greeted by a standing ovation from the Essar Centre faithful.

I'm not related to him. My kids didn't play in the OMHA. I'm not a fan of the Soo. Btw, every top 10 prospect is over-hyped, that's just the way it is.

If this kid continues as he is, he will represent Canada at the U-18's & U-20's. And he will also be drafted in the first round of the 2011 NHL draft. You can take that to the bank while waving the flag and thumbing your nose at the US.

regarding O'Reilly, have you been living in a cave for the past month, he is still with the Colorado Avelanche as could possibly stay for the whole season, in his rookie season playing in 61 games he had 52 points and in the next season had 66 points in 68 games, John McFarland in his rookie season had 52 points in 58 games, and this season has 13 points in 15 games, with Catenacci's 7 points in 12 games it's not even a fair comparison.

He is in a slump, and has not found his way yet, but don't go comparring him to others who have had outstanding rookie seasons.

Anyone who thinks that 16yr olds come into this league and dominate need to look at the facts. Mcfarland had 3 points in 10 games or so in his first month of play, its how it happens. Many players are lucky to get 10-20 points a year. Its an adjustment year for them. Id ignore all the ripping of cat on here, hes such a good player it doesnt really matter what they think.

"To the guy who knows it all you should go on the OHL web site to see that Tyler Seguin the current OHL leader did not score his first OHL goal until his 16th game"

Finally someone does research:

-Seguin had 0 goals 8 assists for 8 points after his first 12 games. He had 1 goal and 8 assists for 9 points after 17 games.

-McFarland scored his first goal after 8 games. He had 3 goals and 5 assists for 8 points after his 12th game.

-Skinner also had 8 points after his 14th game.

-Nazem Kadri had 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points after his 12th game in his rookie season. his final numbers were 62 games played 7 goals 15 assists for 22 points.

This is to put it all in perspective for those idiots who bash these kids on this site like Strome, because he has no points or Catenacci who's got 7 points in 12 games and others. These kids are doing great, keep it up! Those idiots will be writing jealous crap on this site while you boys are living the the dream of playing OHL hockey at 16 years of age.

Good luck to all our 93s in the OHL, you all should be proud of your accomplishments!!!

no one is knocking the acomplishments of these 16 year olds, the problem here is the constant pumping up of Catenacci, it happened all last year and is still happening, for goodness sake stop trying to make him out to be somthing he isn't. The constant comparisons to others means nothing, he has to do it on his own, in his own time, every player is different, but come on people stop trying to make him out to be so outstanding, because his stats don't show it, and unfortunatly stats are used when evaluating a player.

Wow, looks like I missed quite the party today. lol!

2:16, you're a hammerhead. You're judging O'Reilly now after 2 years in the O? This is an apples & oranges comparison. Making a judgement now is simply HINDSIGHT - it's non-sequitor to a comparison of players at a point in time of their development. It's as inane as saying Duchene is worth a bag of pucks because he doesn't produce like Iginla.

My point was his first month or so in the O, and basically his O career. Unlike you, I have not been living in a cave - please explain to me how "deserving" of the 1st overall he was when he was only drafted in the 2nd round of the NHL draft? Players, like point spreads in games are constantly being re-evaluated. Some 1st overalls like McFarland, Seguin and others start slow, and yet others (ie. true PHENOMS) such as JT and Stammer were great right out of the gate (in the O).

This crap about Cat is the same shyte that was spewed on the boards for Gagner when he was on the U-17 and playing in the USHL. It is so tired to people who have a clue.

There is no one (with half a brain) in the Soo worried at this point. Anyone saying otherwise is doing so thru their sphincter. Let's see how he does in Timmins.

Re: Catenacci & Cousins Doing Great!

October 29 2009, 1:56 PM

OK, dummies. Here's the math:

42--993's have played 10 or more games in the OHL this year so far

The leading scorers are:

Meurs, 12 points in 13 games = .923 ppg
Jenner, 11 points in 14 games = .785 ppg
Quine, 10 points in 16 games = .625 ppg
Cousins, 10 points in 16 games = .625 ppg
Catenacci, 9 points in 16 games =.563 ppg
Trochek, 9 points in 16 games =.563 ppg

Draw your own conclusions. Anybody who disses Catenacci or anybody else for scoring at a .563 ppg pace after 16 games as a rookie in the OHL needs a kick in the stones with a frozen skate. There ya go.

You are right. I posted the stats to prove that Cat IS the real deal. My point is that his pace is pretty damn good. Taken over 68 games, that translates into 38 goals as a rookie. And don't forget, unlike just about all of the other rookies, he is playing on the top line which means he's playing against the other teams best forwards and D. Any other morons want to try and argue that he's not the real deal? Sorry...the numbers prove otherwise.

October 29 2009, 2:32 PM

I think that the point is that he should be leading all rookies in scoring, after all he was the #l pick, and all the hype on him last year. 9 points in 16 games as a rookie is not great, as someone posted and isn't even that impressive, and you people who keep pumping up this kid really need a reality check, lines on a hockey team change all the time and he is not always playing against the other teams top line, and I don't have to watch a game played by the Soo to know that stats ARE the number one tool used to evaluate a players performance, and whoever thinks otherwise dosen't have a clue about how to evaluate a player, do you teally think that evaluators really care if a player can carry the puck up the ice only to lose it in the offensive zone, or carry the puck cause a turnover that results in a goal, NO they only care about points. Have you ever heard of an OHL player with ZERO points in his OHL career get drafted to the NHL? Absolutley not, because points are a way of determining a players ability ot play the game, and as muck as I disagre with that way of thinking, it is true, so unless you are able to put it in the net, you are not concidered a premier player in any league.

2:32, you're a poser and an ass clown.

stats are only part of the equation. go to any OHL game on any given night. there are at least half a dozen NHL scouts taking notes, analyzing player's strengths and weakness with & without the puck.

i've been thru this with you before. your 18 years of hockey experience can be summarized in a bottle of ex.

Jenner, 1st place team...Cat, last place team.
O'Reilley did amazing considering he played for Erie. If he had of played for Kitchener or Windsor or London he would have been right up there with Tavares.
Problem is you have to play for who drafts you or run the risk of not playing at all in the O (Lessio is the first kid to get out of his obligation since I started following the O (over 10 years).

Funny that you mention Mayer, he was drafted to the Soo and refused to report and was traded to the Mississauga St. Mikes Majors, and one more thing, in all the years that I have been following hockey, never have I heard such exaggeration of a players abbilities as I have with Daniel Catenacci, for goodness sakes people stop trying to make him out to be more than he is, let the season play out and make your judgements after the season is over, and to the ones boosting this kid, you are doing him no favors.

Not too many kids will be a Tavares or Hall but Catenacci is a damn good hockey player. Watched him play a few games this season and does not look like a rookie out there. Please stop your stupid jealous comments. As for points, look at last years totals and he is on above average pace after 16 games played. Tyler Seguin did not score his first goal until his 16th game. He now leads the OHL a year later. It's a package scouts look for not just points as points will continue to come as these boys get confidence later into the season. Most of the rookies scored 80% of their points in the last half of the season.

Give up your obsession with Catenacci, Strome...etc

I don't find my comments "Bashing", In fact mine are more truthfull than yours, last year when Catenacci was playing for his Dad, stats were exagerated to make him look better, sure he is a good player, but there is no way he acheived the points stated last year and everyone who had anything to do with the team he was on knows it. So we come to this year, and no Dad on the bench and his true stats are showing, how am I bashing him? The stats are there for everyone to see on the OHL website, in the games everyone sees how he plays, good or bad everyone who is at the games sees, and it's a metter of opinion if he is playing good or living up to the hype, and it's my opinion that he is not, now you call it bashing, I call it MY OPINION. If you have another opinion good for you, but don't say other people are bashing him just because they don't agree with you.

Catenacci is the simply the flavour of the month. the hype is no different than McFarland last year, or Hall (although he went 2nd, his 1st year in the league Cherry did a quick bio on him on coach's corner as he was a good ole Kingston boy and Bobby Orr fan), or Stammer, JT and Couture.

together with you not knowing about Fowler & Mayer in your 10 years of league experience, i'm smelling the reak of chanel no. poseur.

The Greyhounds have a game tonight, and with Jordan Nolan's first game of the season, it is quite possible that Nolan will replace Catenacci on the line with Livingston. Should be interesting as Livingston and Nolan have a chemistry on the ice and were their top line last year, and I can't see Coach Lambert leaving a rookie (with not a lot of scoring so far) on the top line with a veteran coming back. But as I said it should be interesting.

Not interesting at all as Nolan is a winger. Catenacci played very well with Nolan in training camp from early articles. The idea was to have an enforcer like Nolan play with the Cat being a rookie. So I wouldn't worry about anything.

There is a forum website called the NOOF (New OHL open forum) where people openly talk about teams and players and on that site there is a forum topic regarding Rookies and new talent, several posters have written about rookies and what has impressed them so far this year, and with 7 comments made, not one of them wrote of Catenacci, now I am not sure if they just haven't had the opportunity to see him play of they have and are not impressed. But you would think that the first everall pick would have impressed somone other than his parents.

Nick Cousins, a good Quinte boy I must add, has got himself straightened out from his party days while playing minor midget in Quinte. Both Nick Cousins and Daniel Catenacci are on fire with the Soo having reat rookie campaigns.

Your really gonna say that? Catenacci is having a pretty good rookie year as a 16 yah old playing in the OHL. Now aways with all the great players 19+ in the O it makes it awfully hard for a 16 year old rookie to break in the league putting up John Taveras like numbers. Give him a chance. He is in a good environment in the Soo playing with another reat young talent in Nick Cousins. Give them both a chance.

Could someone PLEASE explain to me how with 2 goals and 8 assists in 19 games Daniel Catenacci is having a great rookie season? It would seem that people are posting these comments and I am having a hard time trying to figure out what they are talking about, a first overall pick with 2 goals in 19 games it would seem like a medioker season to me.

Watch the games and how the kid competes playing against the top players in the league and not third or fourth liners and there you have it. The goals will come, it's the rest of his game the kid comes with the full package whether you like it or not. Watch one of his OHL games and you will see why announcers get excited watcing him play as the guy did last night in the Windsor game.

Honestly, I see him as an average player, but he if he turns things around, a player that could score 50 goals a season in the OHL, as far as the NHL draft, that is hard to predict, it all deoends on what NHL teams are looking for in that draft, teams that are looking for smaller, faster players would consider him, and teams that need bigger stronger players won't. But remember just because he was drafted first overall to the OHL dosen't guarantee he will be drafted to the NHL.

I agree. The OHL is not a league of first year players. The 93's will be good 2 years from now after their draft year. Not too many OHL players get drafted and go straight to the NHL. Obviously there are exceptions but even John Tavares played 3 years in the OHL.

I need to respond to the clow that continues to put down all the 93's.
Just to put things in perspective I've done research and The top 92 rated player in this coming NHL Draft is Tyler Seguin. He had 3 goals and 12 assists for 15 points in his rookie year after 23 games. He currently has 19 goals and 17 assists for 36 points in 18 games. Also to note Seguin did not register his first OHL goal until his 16th game of the season.

John McFarland the first over-all pick last season finished 9th in rookie scoring with 21 goals and 31 assists for 52 points he is currently ranked in the top 10 picks of the first round of the 2010 NHL Draft.

I can tell you that everyone in the Soo organization is very happy with Cat's game. Just like Barrie is very happy with Strome, Brampton is very happy with Goodrow, Guelph is very happy with Mitchell and Sandlak...etc. NHL scouts are not only looking at a players stats, if that was the case then Ryan O'reilly another first over-all OHL pick two years ago scored 16 and 19 goals in his two OHL seasons. At age 18 he is now playing in the NHL for Colorado and has 14 points in 18 games with a +13 rating. You see, there are other things scouts look for.

I'm just sick of this person that needs to bash these kids for his own, or his son's short-comings,
plus I have some time here at work it's a little slow this morning. Have a good day!

Re: Catenacci & Cousins Doing Great!

First of all 1:17 I am not bashing all 93's, as a matter of fact I am not bashing anyone, just stating the facts, If you can't handle the truth then find another hobby, I have not ever mentioned any player other then the one that this topic is about, so stop trying to make something out of nothing.

I am well aware of OHL players that have gone onto the NHL from the OHL in the last 2 years, Wayne Simmonds LA, Drew Doughty NY, Steven Stamkos TB, John Tavares NY, Matt Duchene CA, and Ryan O'Rielly CA, so no need to write about them. None of their supporters did what Catenacci's have done. If you really think that he really had all those goals last year in Minor Midget then you are the fool. The stats were inflated and everyone knows it well maybe except you.

Now on the topic of my son, he has gone on to have a very successfull OHL career, and thats the reason for my posts, it is not nescessary to continually brag about this kid who has not shown that he is the outstanding player you seem to think he is, 2 goals in 20 games for a first overall pick is terrible plain and simple. Instead of bringing up stats of others that have a slow start, why don't you bring up the stats of the players that have has great first 20 games and I am sure you will see a difference.

I don't know why all U guys get excited about a sport that can't draw a viewing audience. Take a look at all those empty seats down south. It is a true reflection of a poor developing system for the NHL.

There is a big difference between "QUALITY"and"QUANTITY" towards development.

Or any OHL rookie. Seguin had like 3 goals in 18 games last year, how is he doing now? Greg McKegg had 8 goals all year, and is now a point a game player.

Rookies struggle in the OHL, they always do with a few exceptions. It has been going on that way for years. To ignore that history and say that Cat is struggling is either

1. Ignorance, or
2. Purposely misleading.

I hope its #1, because #2 would just be what others have said, ripping on 16 year olds.

No points for Catenacci in tonights game, 2 goals and 8 assists in 23 games, he is on track for 6 goals this season. Now before we hear any exucses or comparisons to other players I would like to make something clear, I do not blame Daniel for his play rather the people who made him out to be something he isn't and put so much pressure on him, and all the stuff written and said about him over the last 2 seasons would seem to much of a boosting for the kid to live up to. Unfortunatly his stats speak for themselves, and I agree with the poster who said "If he isn't the best then why did he go first overall". There have been lots of 16 year old rookies drafted to the OHL who have had better seasons than would seem Daniel is having, and the difference is that NONE of their supporters come on a public site and constantly brag about how great a player they were, for goodness sake, all you are doing is putting pressure on a 16 year old kid, who isn't living up to your expectations. Leave the kid alone, and that would mean all the prople who are boosting this kid.

10 points in 23 games is good for a 16 year old. 6th in rookie scoring. *among the 93's.

2 goals in 24 games is not a great way to start the season, no points in the game tonights win the Soo won 7-0 and not a single point by the first overall pick, Cousins has a goal and an assist, he has 14 points in 24 games, and he is passed over for the U-17 team, someone said in an earlier post that when picking the U-17 team thay should look a performance and not the draft order.

doesnt really matter what anyone thinks on this site most people on here are not playing Junior hockey. He is getting great development by playing against top lines in the OHL and is on team Ontario, I only wish my kid was in his shoes or in anyone of the fortunate kds to have those opportunities...... Thats the skinny.

I can tell Mommy and Daddy are still coming on here trying to make everyone believe their son is better than he is. No one with any hockey sence would say that 2 goals in 25 games is great, except them.

Re: Catenacci & Cousins Doing Great!

November 25 2009, 7:10 AM

No points in the Soo's win tonight, had a little free time at work and I looked up some previous 1st overall picks and this is what I found.

2002 Rob Schremp C 26g 48a 74points
2003 Patrick McNeil D 14points
2004 John Hughes RW 13g 18a 31points
2005 John Tavares C 45g 32a 77points *15 year old
2006 Steven Stamkos C 42g 50a 92points
2007 Ryan O'Reilly 19g 33a 52points
2008 John McFarland C 21g 31A 52points
These are the stats that each player has for their rookie season and for the whole season.

At the current rate, Daniel Catenacci will have 7 goals and 26 assists for a projected total of 33 total points for his rookie year, only one player has less, Patrick McNeil and he was a defenseman. There is also a possibility that he could turn into a goal scorer over the second half of the season, as some of the players mentioned did, but for a first overall pick to have 3 goals in 26 games is buy no means a good first half of the season.

Unfortunatly, when evaluating players the goals/assists are what is used to determine a players worth so to speak, if you work your butt off in a game and have nothing to show for it, then it dosen't matter how fast you skated up the ice.

The 93's playing in the OHL this season do have some pressure on them to perform on the ice and the 1st overall pick has some added pressure to be the best 93 on the ice, having said that, the 1st overall pick should be the best 93 in the OHL and his stats are not reflecting that.

Good luck in the rest of the season, hopefully you can turn things around.

This was done for the first overall pick no one else, the camparison is between first overall picks, not a first overall pick and a 80th pick how would that be fair, then again it is quite possible that the 80th pick has more goals than the first overall pick.

Re: Catenacci & Cousins Doing Great!

November 25 2009, 6:28 PM

As someone stated in an earlier post, getting drafted to the NHL depends on what teams are looking for in that year, they could need more D, or a tough guy, if they need a speedy forward than he has a chance, he still has the second half of the season to find the back of the net. When you are the first overall pick then you are held to a high standard, one that follows around the player for his OHL career, but don't forget that when he was chosen both he and his family enjoyed the limelite that goes along with it, so it's up to him.

And the player that you are inquirig about is Hughes, a first overall pick not chosen in the NHL draft.

Both kids will be very very good pros.....neither are going to be franchise type players. There are no big prizes in the 93 age group for the NHL, maybe in Europe and this is not a disservice. But a frank reality....solid citizens and maybe more than most years.

Re: Catenacci & Cousins Doing Great!

November 26 2009, 1:21 PM

Do not rate these players by points they are putting up in their first season. It all depends on the situations your team puts you (the rookie) in. Many teams do not give their rookies ample powerplay time which is where most points are scored. The Soo has one of the best powerplays in the league so their rookies will not play it. Barrie is stacked so Strome will not be on theirs and so on. Other rookies that are fortunate enough to play on a powerplay will put up some good points. Whats important is to develop and have reasonable ice-time for your rookie season. Most rookies generally score the bulk of their points in the second half of the season if you look at statistics. If you watch the games you will see that Cat, Cousins, Strome, and many others are playing well and in different situations for development. I would rate this 93 group very strong over-all.

There had been talk months before the OHL 93 draft that the strength was at defense. Most scouts were questioning whether the d was as strong as it looked or whether the weaker offensive players were making the d look so strong!

1:21, I understand your points in your post, but the first overall pick goes to the worst team in the OHL, so therefore if you are as good as scouts say you are, then is it not resonable to say that, you should be the best player drafted in that year and therefore should be able to play on any line on the worst team?

that is not a reasonable statement.Being 16 and playing against players 1-4 yrs older than you makes a big difference. Look at 92 McFarland, on a bad team, not blowing the stats out of the water and ranked 6th overall in the nhl draft.Scoring points in your rookie year is a bonus. Kadri was a late cut for the Leafs and not exactly lighting up the league and he's no rookie. Stop the jealousy. It's getting old

How are your kid's stats in midget hockey?

You should spend all your energy helping your kid develop instead of giving updates on Cat every day, it is truly getting old. Whether you like it or not he is doing well and will also be playing on the Team Ontario.

Read papers in the Soo and watch games where his coach and manager praise the kids play as you can see on the feature on the OHL website. The kid is playing against the top lines in the O. Stop your jealousy for this kid and the others for that matter your shit is getting old.

Well what would you want the coach and GM to say? Of course they will talk about him and praise him, if they don't they will look like FOOLS for taking him first overall. And the comment made about helping my kid out of Midget, is that what his parents did for him? Spewing crap to the papers, arranging interviews just to get him drafted higher? Look the kid is a good player, but no where near the player he was made out to be, inflated stats, and never ending injuries. And as far as Team Ontario goes, a little politics I am sure, because we all know that there are several players outplaying him right now, but hey that is one of the perks of going first overall and his parents knew it thats why they pushed so hard for him to go first overall. If he was as good as he was made out to be, then why not be humble and let people see for themselves how good he really is and not push the media so hard? I really don't care if you agree with me or not, and the constant mention of jealousy is the furthest thing from the truth, what is there to be jealous of?

Re: Catenacci & Cousins Doing Great!

November 27 2009, 4:17 PM

Finally, the player that everyone wants to hear about is the first pick from the 2009 OHL Priority Selection, Daniel Catenacci (1993). The 16 year old forward has had a bit of a rough transition to the OHL, as his numbers are probably below a lot of people’s expectations at this point (27GP 3-8-11 -6). Catenacci is a very good skater and has a lot of lower body strength for only being 5’10”, 180lbs. He competes very hard and doesn’t back down in the corners and actually is willing to lay the body when he has the opportunity. Offensively, he has a lot of raw skill, but it hasn’t quite translated to the OHL level, and it might not to the extent that some people expect. He’s definitely more of a playmaker, but he lacks the natural creativity of high end players which limits what he can do. Next season will go a long way towards indicating where Catenacci might go in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, but at this point he could be anywhere from the late first to the middle rounds.

In the 7-1 Soo victory, Catenacci had 1 goal and 1 assist, and also ended up with a -1, so in theory his points were acheived on the PP, and he was on the ice for the only goal against. He now has 14 points in 29 games, on track for 32-35 points this season.

according to the gamesheet, he did have a chance in the shootout he was the 6th shooter out of 6, and didn't score, so the coach was just going through the lineup, it's not like he was first or second and they were hoping he would win the game for them. And everyone who plays in London plays infront of 9000+ fans so don't make it seem like they were there just to see him skate, because right now thats all he is doing is skating.
