In WW2 the US military contracted with a large number of suppliers who each used subconttractors, so much variation is posible.
Firstly, if you want to do the "airplane style" chipped paint on a US armored vehicle I owuld get a good set of photos and VERIFY the chipping. This has been a hot topic among US modelers for a while. I'm not saying that American vehicles didn't chip their paint, but not like the classic chipping that aircarft modelers love so much. A US tank might not even have a "primer" per se, many were primed and painted with good old OD and had it baked on like an automotive finish. Look at some of the tanks that have been standing in parks for 50 years. The paint doesn't chip as much as get rubbed down. The US finishes were generally pretty tough.
If you absolutely MUST chip paint then your primer would be either OD or a red-brown for an armored vehicle.
