So IF I was going start to collect cards with a "PIRATE" theme say up to the 1960's how many sets would I be looking at getting? All types of cards Gum, Candy and cigarrette?

Tony--interesting topic---best advice is to get Benjamin guide & the new Non Sport Bible--half the fun is searching thru everything to find the Pirates! R109 Pirate Pictures, R124 Sea Raiders are the classic 30's sets---hi # SR prob run 100-200 in avg condition. 3 tough #'s in PPBG are 9, 34, 59---couple hundred in top shape? Other sets R110 not too expensive, "disc" subsets from Sealcraft/Leader tough to find, but not too expensive, R308 Tattoo wrappers & pirate smackers, even Majic Fold has a pirate theme for one. 50's cheaper---Novel Candy box subset, R790 Pirate cards, scattered pirates in variety of sets Look N' See, poss. Scoop, X Ray Round Up, even Davy Crockett fought the River Pirates (he won of course). Not familiar with 60's much but I know there are some Pirate themes----
good luck hunting for your pirate treasures!

Jim---if you can't hijack a Pirate post what's the world coming to?
have to run, but will try to find the other 5 when I get back
(PS --I was hoping to trap Dan some Sunday morning by claiming I had an original Goudey Premium Great Spirit Dallin print, but I expect he's too crafty to fall for it anyway)
Tony---I knew there was a Pirate in there somewhere---

Don: Those are beauties! Did you get those from Hugh? I recall he had some of those years ago and I passed as I was fixated on just getting the issues with an R number ala Burdick...probably not a wise decision.

Chuck---not entirely sure where I got them, but from an old auction, not from HJJ. I presume Lincoln is the one not listed in NSB---have to say, I kinda thought they were among the ugliest premiums/cards ever issued---origami gone mad?

Gil,
You mean my junker card went from NJ to NJ to wherever?
That's more traveling than I did all of 2007.
Good move, Gil.....why.....cause I've been saving you
many, many.....did I say many....Sweet Caporal plane cards
I'm trying to get you a consec. run, like 1-10 or 1-20
or 1-eternity.
Anyway, your choice of "giving" will result in more
"receiving"....just give me a couple more weeks.

Dan,
This card was not a junker.
I have never seen a more worn card, true.
But there was no damage: no holes, no writing, no stains, etc.
Just intense, relentless appreciation!
As I told Tony, I am honored to have been a part of its continuing history.
Gil
Edited to add:
We are smuggling it out of the country.
Hopefully, the Canadian Customs people don't read this forum yet.
Or they will try to charge Tony $75 again.
Like last time we sent him something.

In eight attempts in this thread Tony F was shut out from scoring.
Almost everyone else was able to score five points, apparently without even trying.
Except Anonymous (Login pacific-coast-cards - who also couldn't score.
Why is this?
Yikes! Now Im not scoring either.

To continue the skull & crossbones thread...Daniel Hollandbeck, aka "Pirate Dan," will have an article on Pirate cards(Novel Package Company)in the next issue of The Wrapper. Dan writes that he has been working on the article for 15 years!

Well, I don't want anybody to get to built up over this "article". It's really just my ramblings on the amount of time and diffuiculty I had putting this little set together. I'm completely new to this discussion thing, and I'm trying to post color scans of the cards and a complete box as well.
Happy New Year!

Daniel--what a great post---congratulations on finishing your set!! I have been looking for these for 15 years also, & only recently completed the set (assuming 12 is the final total), altho few of my cards are in such good shape as yours. Boxes very hard to find also.
If you are a "pirate" collector I wonder if you have run across this Mclean box-card before & if so how many are in the set. I only know of this one & 1 in Benj. guide
On your R 722-5 cards I have the same fronts & backs & have not seen any variations, altho total # of cards I have seen is small. Some of the other Novel candy box cards have variations-----here's a few from the Indian Series for example
You can see the difference in numbers/front titles as well as one card back coloration difference---ever notice this in the Pirates or other Novels?
Looking forward to your complete article in Les' Wrapper!

You have a complete set as well, that's great. I have been lucky to upgrade several of the cards over time. I have perhaps seven duplicates in lesser condition in addition to what are in the pictures. I have not seen any variations in text, picture, or card stock color.
I love the Indian Series cards; you have some real nice examples. For some reason I like all of the Novel Package Co. cards at this point. I have had a complete box of one of the kinghts series, but I traded it for some of the pirate series years ago.
I have seen the McLean box, but also just the one pictured with William Kidd on it. Are you dc19567? This box was on eBay recently and I was the losing bidder. I was out on business travel and couldn't get back to up my bid before the auction expired. This was a real heart breaker. Oh well, perhaps in another twenty years I'll stumble onto another one.

Daniel---yes I got that McLean box on ebay--haven't seen another one. I also enjoy the Novel series & have a few beat up dupes from various titles--if you are interested in trades I will email you a list of my doubles tomorrow & some numbers that I need----

I live about 45 miles from Grand Terre (noted on the reverse of the card of Jean Lafitte). I regularly kayak to the island and explore the remains of Fort Livingston and surrounding structures. There is not much left of the island these days as a result of coastal erosion. I believe the mosquitoes out number the grains of sand on Grand Terre!
