Don, my humble apologies. I take back my posts where I chose the toughest
Goudey sets. This set must go to the head of the class.

I hope the NS community takes the opportunity to thank you for sharing
this set, whereas no image has never been seen before on the internet.
(no major auctions, no ebay, etc)

Don: Did you pick those up from Hugh? He showed me a handful of them at a Philly Show a while back and I passed (stupidly) because I was fixated on only the type cards with R numbers. They are beauties.

Dan & Chuck---I got the set way long ago at some auction & never really looked for them again, so frankly I have no real grasp for whether they are tough to find or not. I'm learning over the years that some material I think is hard to find only appears to be tough---largely because of my limited access to the shows where this stuff appears. I have seen forum members note with surprise how much some item fetched at a major auction, when they have similar material readily available at their own tables at the shows! (I have to get out more often)
I'm not surprised that Hugh had them at his table, if anyone did!

Don, After seeing those beauties I can see where Mad Magazine may have come up with their back page 'foldee' that I grew up with in the 1950's and 1960's.
I also wonder if the Strange True Stories card #24 The Bat Man led to the creation of the Batman character by Bob Kane in the 1930's.
Think about it for a few seconds and you could have non sports responsible for two highly popular American classics.

Bill: In a Wrapper article a few years back, Chris Watson (I think) made the same conjecture about the relationship between the STS #24 Batman and the superhero comic...seems to be pretty plausible. Maybe there are some Batman fanatics out there who know more about the origins of that character.

Chris Watson, Les Davis: PLEASE?!!

Bill, good catch!

-----------------------

Yeah, Chuck, I can remember Chris's article in The Wrapper . . . you out there, Chris

Chris, your series of 1930s card census articles were far and away the best material to ever appear in The Wrapper.  Not even a close race.  (Only some of the early Bob Nolan pieces were enjoyable enough to run second, but in all honesty, a far distant second, at that.)

They were simply WONDERFUL.  You stopped prematurely, though, with other sets to write up . . . Well, am sure all of us hope you and Les can now find a way to resurrect and continue this benchmark calibre series.  With NSB done, reducing that workload, this might now be possible again.

We would all need to update our card census data for you (it's timely, anyway, betcha a LOTS has come out of grandpa's attics over the past few years) and then you could take it from there?

Many sets never did get the 'Full Watson Treatment' and we're all still waiting .  .  . !!!

Chris? Les?? Puh-leeeeease???!!!

Ralph---those were tremendous articles/census (Richard L. has done some similar work here on forum---any chance appearing in the wrapper soon?). I would also add for all time honors some of Ron Wilsons articles (his were the first time I had seen such an exhaustive treatment/explanation of Indian Gum & the 3 tough PPBG numbers). I'm sure many other great contributions slip my mind at the moment---can anyone else reminisce?

This thread began with me needing an illo of Majik Fold for my Wrapper column. While Chris and I have had some disagreements, I would welcome more articles from him in a heartbeat. Or Ron Wilson, the author of the definitive Indian Gum survey. Or anyone in this Forum for that matter! And it's not that difficult; just email your thoughts and send a couple of illo attachments.I will set up the pages. Easy peasy. C'mon, Ralph; you did some great stories. So...any help out there?

In addition to the aforementioned authors, I would like to add Dave Owen for his Davy Crockett articles and his 'rediscovery' of his childhood Scoops cards as part of his greatest find.
Ralph's articles on Hoppy and Roy Rogers, Ron Wilson's on Wonderbread Wackys, Bob Nolan's on 'assorted' and Chris Watson's on 1930's 'anything' all have been excellent reading and informative oftentimes leading to me collecting those issues.
Chris, didn't mean to steal your Bat Man card/comic reference.

Oops, my bad!

Geez, how could I have ever forgotten to salute the fantastic run of Ron Wilson articles?

(Hi Ron, you out there?!!)

Ron was a prolific hobby writer and his work in THE WRAPPER was always, for me, a highlight of each issue.  While Ron did a lot of groundbreaking checklisting work and analysis of tuff sets (e.g., R73 Goudey Indian Gum), what I liked most of all was when he waxed philosophical and just plain talked about collecting, in general.  For example, his analysis of the different ways in which to collect (for instance, the stages collectors can progress through. such as card fans who build sets card-by-card vs those who amass multiples from a fixed universe of sets, etc.), were truly thought-provoking and educational.

Kudos, Ron!

One more:  For humor, nobody could touch Denis Kramer's stuff in our favorite hobby mag.  Too bad there isn't more, but looks up some of Denis' past articles for a good dose of dry wit and irony!
