Hi Dan,

Mastro has sets of the Hassan and Canadian cards. The fronts look the same, but the backs are definitely different.

Hey Dan,
The Weber baking set has some interesting differences from the Hassan set. The most prominent being the inclusion of the "An Exciting Game" card that is not in the Hassan series.

The second difference is that all the images are mirror images of the Hassan series (card on left is Weber - right is Hassan).

The Weber cards are also printed on thin paper stock (like many of the bread cards).

Also, by reading the text on the back it is implied that the set length is only 40 however it is believed that all 50 were made (I can't confirm this as I do not have the full set).

Anybody out there have an example of the mail away premium "Riders of the Lazy 7"?

You are overlooking the basic rule of non-sport premiums. If the back says "send all 40 in", that means there are only 39.

information, information

June 2 2008, 6:44 PM

Information is the reason this Chat Board is so unique.

I asked for information, and it comes forward.

Thank you all.

Todd, I've checked and can't find a single Weber in my collection.
Sad, so very sad.

Yes, very cool sets, certainly a few difference, he is a good shot of the Canadian version but there is 50 in this set.

His Favorite Brand

June 3 2008, 7:03 PM

My favorite example in this case is "His Favorite Brand." In the Hassan case, the cowboy is holding up a pack of Hassans.

After talking about tobacco use in general and the trick of rolling a cigarette with one hand, the back of the card notes, "... Since the 'Hassan' brand has been put on the market, the cowboys, like smokers everywhere, have recognized the find quality of this low priced brand. They no longer have the trouble of making their own cigarettes, when such good ones can be bought cheaply."

In contrast, the Pullman Onist card has a blanked out name and no descriptive text. Also, they have no "His favorite Brand" title on the card.

Ganong "Rodeo" Bars, took it one step farther. Keeping it "His Favorite Brand," and with no descriptive back text, but making the object a package of Ganongs.

The Cowboy series takes the cake however. They call it "His Favorite Brand," they blank out the box,

But look what they say one the back:

Hassan/Weber "Exciting Game"

August 22 2015, 4:29 PM

Hoping someone can help. I work for a magazine that's looking to run an image of "An Exciting Game," the fabled "missing 50th card" from the Hassan "Cowboy Life" series. Todd Riley ran an image of the card on this thread. Does he still have the card? Does anyone else? And is someone willing/able to scan the card at high resolution (300 dpi) for publication? Happy to run a credit and web address of contributor. Thanks!

I have never seen anything that leads me to believe that the "An exciting game" card actually exists for the Hassan set. While I don't think that simply wanting to write an article about it will produce one I sincerely hope that it does.

The image that Todd Riley posted is from the Weber baking set, not the Hassan set. The image that Claude posted is from the Hamilton Gum set.

Daniel is right. The one I have is the Weber Bread one. Let me know if you want a scan of that one.

Thanks again to each of you who steered me in the right direction regarding the cards. I acquired a set (they are something else) and wrote that magazine article I'd threatened to write about the Hassan T53 Cowboy Series.

The story is in the April 2016 issue of Wild West magazine, available at most major newsstands in the States. If the subject matter interests you, you can also pick up a subscription through our website: We hadn't planned to put the story on our site, but there are plenty of interesting stories to browse online.

CLAUDE EMOND, I especially want to thank you for providing an image of "The Exciting Game" card. I wrote a sidebar about the card and credited you with providing the image. If you reply to me, I'll mail you a copy of the issue.

Much appreciated all!

to read the article, seems like it will be interesting. I went to Barnes & Noble
Booksellers today to pick it up but they are displaying February 2016. The article
is in the April edition, so we may have to wait a little while to pick it up. tm

Found myself near a Barnes & Noble today and I remembered this post. They had a couple of copies so at $5.99 I picked one up. The images are very high quality; very well done. It's great to see articles like this in non-hobby publications. Maybe it will bring in a few new collectors to the fold.

Great job Dave.
