"Hollywood Picture Star Gum" - R68 and V289

I've held back on the USA SHELBY "Hollywood Picture Star Gum" and it's
somewhat similar CANADIAN HAMILTON "Hollywood Picture Star Gum"

Although I have the Canadian set complete, I never finished my USA set.
Ralph Perry's wonderful bidding always kept me at bay.

............A very brief tutorial........................

1. Although the two sets show the same 40 front images, the numbering
is different.
(ex: Canadian Jean Harlow is #8 -- USA Jean harlow is #39

2. Finding cards in ex+ is an arduous task. If you read Vin Minner's
description of the 1930s Tarzan/Isis in the current Wrapper, you will
find the Shelby card stock is similar.

3. These sets are possibly the most beautiful Movie Star sets issued
in the 1930s in the USA/Canada.

4. Ralph Perry is one of the most knowledgeable collectors of the USA
set; BobbyHockey knows much of Canadian issues and I hope they
and other collectors will post more information.

................. The Webpage(s) ......................
A. I think that since the fronts are the same, single front images are needed.
B. Back images for both sets are appreciated.
C. Wrapper images are needed.
D Advertising pieces (BobbyHockey, are you reading this) are appreciated.

I'd love to showcase a webpage showing the one line of each card...
the front image on the left
the USA backside in the center
and
the Canadian backside to the right.

Note there are 2 different Canadian backs, one bilingual, one not. There is also a color variation if you care about that.

I wish I could help more, I know there is an album for the R68 but don't know if there is a Canadian one?

Unfortunately with Gum in Canada, there wasn't much in the way of media advertisments and was mostly in-store and are extremely difficult to acquire or find.

I do know the owner of the Shelby Gum Company's son moved to Canada and started the Hamilton Chewing Gum Company, thus these two similar sets.

There are also two different backs for the American versions, one with ad advertisement for the album and one without. Here they are for the Stan Laurel card.

I'm not quite sure, but I think this posting has brought forth more
information than any of the other webpage requests I've made.

Thanks to all of you....and pre-thanks to the rest of you that might
be posting information/images on these sets.

Dan,

Hollywood Picture Stars has long been a top collecting interest for me, for exactly all the reasons you and others have raised:  a richly rewarding challenge, with wonderful card design, variation backs, American v Canadian sets, etc.  Long ago completed an initial US set and then a Canadian set, but only then became aware of all those pesky variations!  So am still knee-deep in this right now, going after variation sets.  Am presuming it would be possible to complete the US set in either solely the red ink backs (album ad version) or the other.  It's slow going at the moment.

There was a fellow on ebay 10 years ago and he was the unofficial custodian of the Shelby Gum Co. museum in Shelby, OH.  Some kind of archive sponsored by the city or country, not sure.  Anyway, you could always count on him to bid on every HPS lot to come up, also Shelby bicycles, etc and so forth.  At one time, he was sitting on a stockpile of sets in various permutations, albums, etc.  I was never able to convince him to sell me an album.  Still unable to ever add an album to my collection -- ANYBODY GOT ONE TO SELL/TRADE?

Also, some possible card front variations have been alluded to, in the text at the bottom of the page, under the star's picture.  Don't know if this variation occurs on what is otherwise the same card (meaning two cards to collect of a single star, one referring to specific Hollywood production or studio, one not) or if it is a difference noted between how different stars' cards were done across the set, but not generating more collectable 'targets'.

Lastly, the numbering is different for the American set vs the Canadian . . .  One of the reasons there aren't any mixed sets floating around, like there are for Sea Raiders, for instance.

On my Laurel and Hardy trading card tour, you can see fronts and backs for both American versions of the Laurel and Hardy cards, plus the front and back of one of the Hamilton cards for each. There are minor text variations on the fronts of these cards.
