I'm very interested in Ripley's cards & memorabilia (Sparked mainly by my 14 year old daughters interest in the topic). I was wondering exactly how many Ripley card sets were issued prior to 1980. I know of the following:
1. 1934 Carreras Set of 50 cards.
2. 1937 Wolverine Gum Set of 48 cards
3. 1953 Parkhurst Set of 100 cards
4. 1970 Fleer Set of 84 cards
Can anyone add to the above list?
Any help would be appreciated.

Jerry, as mentioned in a previous thread, there was a 35 card set of Ripley's BION issued in 1962 by Dymanic. They were issued two ways, one as a boxed set and also in individual packages. I have never seen a BION pack but have seen other Dynamic issue packs. Every once in awhile, you can find the boxed set at a flea market, estate sale etc for $10 - 25. Current NSU value is $175. If you can't find one (card) anywhere, let me know and I'll send you one - I have two left from my childhood boxed set.

Here is a very rare Canadian one, from Quaker Oats.(blank backed)
Now in 1955 Parhurst and Quaker Oats got together on a hockey issue. Quaker issued the same set of cards except with a Quaker speciific back and are extremely rare. Maybe this is something similar!?
Can't say I ever seen another one from Quaker Oats before, always Parkhurst. In 53' they issued packages of Ripley's cards from Parkhurst in Kellogg's cereal...

The 1970's unnumbered Fleer series was also issued by various bread companies in a numbered version. I think the different bakeries are: Colonial, Kilpatrick, Rainbo, and Sunbeam.

Jerry,
If you want a tough challenge, try completing the Milk Duds Ripley set from the 70's, especially in box form. These rarely surface, an ebay seller auctioned of many individual boxes a couple years ago. These are not to be confused with Don's Holloway's.

Tropical Storm Fay caused some flooding around here (in Tallahassee) and it got to my comic book collection in my closet. Most were bagged and okay, but a few were not and they were soaked. Fortunately, most of those have dried out well, so I was lucky. (They were just reading copies.) But it got me reading some of my old comics which I bought by the box load but never had a chance to read. My favorites now are THE TWILIGHT ZONE, BORIS KARLOFF PRESENTS, and RIPLEYS BELIEVE IT OR NOT. I think Ripleys is my favorite of the three because they actually include historical events in the mix. I just finished reading the true story of the Red Barron... who was shot down after his 81st kill and landed his plane perfectly, but was found dead with his hand still on the controls (believe it or not!) I have all the card sets mentioned, though not the high numbers of the Wolverton one (believe it or not!) How Ripley milked his idea and made all that money off that one trick pony is perhaps the most amazing and strange but true story in the batch!

My world is reeling... First, I heard they were selling a U.S. Senate seat to the highest bidder, and now, I hear that the RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT comic book I mentioned ealier had LIED to me about the Red Baron! He did not land his plane after being shot with his dead hands found still gripping the controls (as reported in the comic). Instead, he was shot down and crashed. Ripley! How could you lie to a young boy who wanted so desperately to believe BELIEVE IT OR NOT? Now, any time I see a story a little too good to be true, and you ask me to BELIEVE IT OR NOT, I'll have to believe it... NOT!

I had asked Les Davis if he would look into the situation for me (as a favor to his fellow Illinois neighbors who would benifit from my stewardship), but I did not authorize the use of any payment whatsoever. I'm confident that no quid pro quo was offered on my behalf nor given to Governor or any of his associates. I'm absolutely certain that no paypal payments were made to that end.
