Huge dropoff in bids, right after the winner and 'Dan The Underbidder'.  All it would have taken was for one of those two gents to have not seen this item . . . . and the seller would have seen his income drop by $2700!

Besides being unaware of one of the hobby's legendary cards hidden away in this lot, the seller was playing with fire by trying to sell something like this right on top of the Christmas/NY holidays . . . with a significant proportion of the audience on holidays, or less focussed on the hobby and more on family, gift-giving, football, etc etc etc.

I bid with 10 seconds to go,
just to eliminate all bids coming in,
unless they were higher higher.

One person emailed me today saying their bid didn't take.
cause it wasn't high enough.

I was just going to say that I set my snipes for 6 seconds left. It would not have registered.

And I think the Holidays are a great time to sell. I saw thinking about starting a thread about it. I had many end on January 1st just figuring that many folks had days off and a lot of buyers spent time looking at Ebay to get away from the in-laws. I did very well actually.

Good point -- there apparently were failed snipes which didn't surpass Dan's underbid, so there wouldn't have been a $2700 swing in the price.

Eric, can you share with us:  if your bid HAD dictated the sales price, how much would this card have gone for?   And are there other bidders on board who also had snipes fail . . .?

Think I've seen threads in the past about pro's/con's of selling during the holiday season, but it's always a good discussion.  Recommend you go ahead with that idea, Eric, and kickstart the topic over on the baseball card board, where there are a lot more active sellers who can chime in.  Would be interested to read their thoughts on this.  My view on this is mainly subjective/anecdotal ... it feels like I have snapped up holiday bid bargains, in the past, from what appeared to me to be an under-populated ebay . . .  of course nowadays the existence of bidsnipe engines probably would lessen the impact of this.

My Snipe didn't register either. I was also hoping people missed this.

Ralph, I think the holiday season is a great time to sell stuff. Yes, some people are on Holiday. But lots of others are buying things for themselves or others, and other people get money for Christmas!

For those of us who are not as wise in the ways of the NS hobby as you all are, can anyone tell me which card everyone was after?

I was wondering that also. I know nothing about the set but if I had to guess, I'd say it's the "free" cowboy outfit card. Probably was an insert card in only a few packs.

The Cowboy Outfit, #25, seemingly wasn't given with gum, but when store owners
wrote to Gum Inc complaining, they were sent a few cards to appease them.

The storeowner then could give the card to kids, who would redeem it for
the real cowboy outfit.

Yes, Wild West #25 is one of the Holy Grails of the vintage nonsports hobby. This is only the second or third I've seen for sale. That's why I said I don't know how much I would have bid if I'd seen it. Maybe one of my kids wouldn't be going to college.

This card fetched about 3600 (including BP) nearly 5 years ago in an April '04 Mastro auction. Then in December of '04 one was offered on ebay and reserve was not met. I did email the seller and would have taken 2K for it. However, with zero feedback and 99% certain he cropped the the PSA holder out from the Mastro offering, thanks but no thanks.

that I am quite impressed with the data and histories that many of the important people here (sorry Tom you too happy.gif) are able to maintain and subsequently access! My comments are precipitated by the snapshot provided by Richard L. of a long gone auction, but many here pull up feebay auctions from like 40 years ago and reference lots that sold in littletown usa. It reminded me that I am humbled often when viewing this and our sister board - as I can barely manage the actual stuff I have - forget about all the provenance and anecdotal information. I struggle to store pictures and information, get stuff, and keep it organized. Maintaing and filing information - even without actual paper trails - is daunting to say the least and I have catalog swatches all over the place. Add to the burden of compiling endless data - vetted, stored and even PUBLISHED by our authors here (I can think of at least 4/5!). I ralse my glass to you'se guys and to those that struggled before the computer age. Unfortunately I am still struggling a bit in 2009.... happy.gif
