Just what is Tom doing at 11:38 in the morning. Do you have a "corner office"?
Reading things like these are not just VERY interesting, they are also sad since they represent long lost chances to obtain rare pieces.
I would wager that a lot of these items that were purchased were thrown in the trash by wives or relatives along with collections of the deceased.
Paper gets no respect. I have been to auctions were they just throw all the paper out!
Nice post. Now, does anyone have the list?

Back around that time, my college tuition bill was something like $2k/yr and I bought an AMC Gremlin (bottom of the line economy car) for $2.5k.

But college tuition (state school) is NOW something like 7x to 10x more, I suppose.

And the cheapest of the cheap new cars THESE DAYS is still perhaps 7x or 8x the price back then.

So . . . . multiply those cardprices from 1969 by, oh, say 8x to get a crude approximation of prices in 2009 dollars . . . still cheap!

== >  Horrors of War, mint set of 288, for $1000 (2009 dollars).

Wow.

Tom, you're killing me. Actually, I have a similar list from a baseball card dealer around that same time and I still remember I could have (if I wasn't delivering papers at the time) gotten every Topps baseball set from 1954 to 1971 complete for less than $1000 total. I think Dan C has either shared on this board or has some good stories he can share about John Fawcett and the great Goudey find.
