Its been a long while since I've picked up anything worthy of posting here on the Nonsports side but I thought I would share the following card which I was happy to receive today.

It is a 4 3/8 x 5 5/8 card of Admiral William Sampson produced by Croft & Allen of the Philadelphia area.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_T._Sampson

If anyone knows whether this issue has an ACC designation or knows anything about the issue, I'd be very intersted in hearing about it.

about it is I cost Scott about 60 extra bucks and didn't win it! Que sera sera........shoulda got a little heavier on the snipe! Congrats. Never seen another. Uncatalogued in ACC but I could understand if it wasn't an insert. The size alone is larger but wondering if it's part of a 'set'. Anyway, good guy to win it and keeps it in the Philly area..........

Hi Tom,

I figured that it was likely I was bidding against someone on here. No problem on costing me a few extra $$$...

I was pretty determined to win this one since I had never seen an example of the card before and because of its ties to Croft & Allen. It is my personal mission to bring as much Croft & Allen material back home to the Philadelphia area as possible happy.gif

Based on the fact that the back states "see coupon in packages" it does sound like these weren't inserts but some type of premium or give away that you had to mail in for. I suspect, like you, that there are/were probably others available.

Scott

I saw this one too but forgot to bid. I have not dug through my collection to check but i am 90% certain that the same art work is used on a series listed in the ACC as H614 Spanish War Heroes issued by Hoff's Extract.
As for weahter or not it is an insert, my vote goes with insert, as it says at the top of the card "Distributed with..." That to me has always been a prettty accurate indicater that it was an insert with product.

Great card!

when you find a card that isn't catalogued in the ACC. I mean how difficult must it have been to find these if Burdick et al couldn't include them in any of the ACC's from the earliest inception through 1960? AND.....you'd have thought that if the artwork was similar to one of the H-issues, that the C&A's would have shown up or someone would have reported them between the earlier and later isues of ACC. Great stuff!

Hi Jay,

Thanks for the information. I'll have to look up the other set that you mentioned this evening.

As far as whether the card was an insert or not, I thought the same thing at first when I saw the "distributed with" line on the back of the card but then I guess I questioned the mention of the coupons at the bottom and whether one had to collect the coupons in order to obtain one (or more) cards or not.

Tom,

I'm always amazed that Burdick was able to catalog as much as he did during his time given the lack of resources that we have today.

Being that Croft & Allen was a very regional company and, given the supposition that the promotion may not have been very popular or was limited, it doesn't surprise me that it would lack an ACC designation.

There are a handful of Baseball issues from that time period which were "discovered" after the last ACC so I would expect that there would be at least a few on the non sports side as well.
