N309 - Presidents of U.S.

23 card series showing the presidents up through Benjamin Harrison. The names are facsimile signatures on the fronts. The bottom has a rectangular box which is used in some cases for advertising.

This is a stock issue used by many businesses. Burdick put the various tobacco advertising in the N309 category & put the non-tobacco in H600.

There are six tobacco companies known:

American Eagle Tobacco Co, Detroit, Mich.
Aug. Beck & Co., Chicago, Ill.
M. Hirsch
P.H. May & Borther, Richmond, VA (Mayo's Cut Plug)
Yarbrough

The presidents are (in chronological order):

George Washington
John Adams
Thomas Jefferson
James Madison
James Monroe
John Quincy Adams
Andrew Jackson
Martin Van Buren
William H. Harrison
John Tyler
James Polk
Zachary Taylor
Millard Fillmore
Franklin Pierce
James Buchanan
Abraham Lincoln
Andrew Johnson
Ulysses S. Grant
Rutherford B. Hayes
James Garfield
Chester A. Arthur
Grover Cleveland
Benjamin Harrison

N309 Bill Jones Cut Plug

Bob,

I posted a N309 with Bill Jones His Cut Plug stamped on the back in a thread a couple pages back here's the link:

http://www.network54.com/Forum/526604/thread/1231882727/last-1231883353/Unexpected++card+backs..

I've seen this (Bill Jones) listed as a distributor of some other N cards that came from multiple companies. As I think about it, that's the only place I've seen reference to Bill Jones His Cut Plug. Would/might this be another company to associate with these cards.

Also in the same picture is a an N50 ship with a Sir Toby Cut Plug back. I remember an earlier thread listing the different companies that distributed the N50s that did not inlcude Sir Toby as a manufacturer.. same question as above for the N50 card.

Thanks,
Greg

The only other sets I've seen or read about that "Bill Jones" is associated with are N501 & N512, both multi-company issues. It wouldn't surprise me that this stock presidents set was used by Bill Jones as well.

I'm not so certain about the N50 back. First, Sir Toby Cut Plug is a brand, not a company, & I don't have any info off-hand regarding who might have distributed that brand or whether the brand was associated with one of the companies that issued the N50's. Second, as it appears that this is some type of a sticker or piece of paper, it might have been added after the card was issued. Some of the N624's came with a pasted-on sticker stating "Smoke Sir Toby Cut Plug" which might have been transferred at some point to the N50. Hard to say for certain when that sticker got there - pre- or post-factory - we'd probably need more examples to make a better judgment.
