R66 - Heroes of Pearl Harbor - Mastro's Lot 1475

This Mastro's 6-card lot is listed (incorrectly?) as a complete set, but is missing the two cards I have been fruitlessly looking for, for several years now, namely Niedzwiecki and Kidd.   The Benjamin white guide has a strange entry on this set, saying the set has 6 known cards but then lists details for 8 cards in the checklist.  This is probably what has given rise to confusion by collectors.

Hope nobody's Mastro bid includes a set premium component, because the winner is probably years away from finishing off this toughie.  Still, great cards and very desirable.

Question to the board:  Dan, Don, Chuck, Richard . . . you guys have those final two cards?  Please tell me they DO exist, so I'll know I haven't been wasting my time.

Lot Description

This series' blue-tinted photographs serve to memorialize American heroes who gave their lives in their country's service at Pearl Harbor. The approximately 1-7/8" x 3" collectibles, which feature "nubs" from one-time perforation at each of their sides, were available only as candy-box panels; as such, the rough-cut cards suffered a correspondingly minimal rate of survival. This full set of the un-numbered production's half-dozen known, "Killed in Action" subjects includes: Christianson, Kelly, Meslener, Northway, Smith and South. Grades mostly EX to EX/MT with two slightly lesser. This is only the second time that Mastro Auctions has offered a complete set of these scarcities. An extremely rare issue, easily one of the hobby's best!

Ralph ---they both exist & I saw them couple times when HJJ was selling them---it took him some time to sell them, & he finally took less than he originally asked----sorry I didn't pick them up at the time! Oh well----maybe someone else here actually got them? Anyway, good hunting!

Mastro auctions, in my inexperienced opinion, should be treated with the same caution as GAI slabs. Not yet PRO, but heading there.

Ralph: I have the Colin Kelly card in my type card collection, no others. I do remember, as Don mentioned, Hugh having the two tough ones up for sale. Since I wasn't going for the whole set, I wasn't tempted but I'm not sure who got them.

Thanks for that scan, Richard!  (And now that I see it, a murky memory was reawakened.)

But anyway:  Don, gee, at only a grand each, whatever stopped you from pulling the trigger on these?

I guess Mastro is just calling this "complete" much as you would refer to a 30 card set of R114's as complete.
