Mastro Auction

Would it be inappropriate to ask here if anyone would like to work together on Mastro lot 1414? The group is largely a big compilation of strip cards, and I am only interested in part of the overall lot. It doesn't make sense for me to pay for the whole lot for the part that I am interested in.

Hi Daniel,

I might be interested, depending on what cards you don't want. Please email me at alanrmoon at aol dot com. I tried to send you a private message but couldn't for some unknown reason.

Hi Dan & Alan.
I did not win lot 1414. $2100 without the juice was my limit. Lets plan better & sooner next time.

Had I known it was going to get this crazy I would picked up quite a few U.S. Caramel Presidents on ebay yesterday.

ANOTHER matter:
The E123 album set has not had a bid since it ended yet its still in "extended bidding"? as I write ...go figure

I was rooting for you big time Charley. If the winner of lot 1414 frequents this board, could you please contact me? I need about twenty cards from this lot (none from the cops and robbers near set). Thanks.

There is a thread on the Baseball side about how consignor's are not getting paid. The rumor is that they are in financial difficulty.

If they go bankrupt, and you paid but did not receive your lots, you're out of the money. And even if you do get the lots, if the consignor does not get paid, you need to return the cards and you are out of the money.

Caveat Emptor.

I followed that Mastro thread (on the Baseball side) for awhile. Guess I'm lucky I'm banned from Mastro.

I thought there were a huge number of lots that were a great deal for the bidder (provided they are able to complete the transaction).

I was following a few of the pre-war R-lots. Without knowing the card number for the 2 G-Men lots (I asked Mastro for a list of the card numbers, but as expected, no response); it is very hard to know what the value of those 2 lots were.

The priced realized for the R69 Horrors of War PSA graded cards (with 1 exception) were just astronomical - $4200 for a number 152 PSA 8??????
I'd offer any of my HOW PSA 8's to anybody for half that (try and keep the offer eMails down to a few dozen an hour please.....)

I didn't bother bidding because of the BB thread, also.

I am sick, knowing the lots I wanted went for half what I would have bid.

As posted above, I take solace in thinking that my high,
last minute bid would have been topped.

worth adding

I too am interested in some cards from lot 1414 if the winner does post/lurk here.

namely Strip card G-men and Cops and Robbers. Will pay 30.00 and up per cards I need for R36 if they are in exmt-nmint shape. Less for the g-men strip cards.

Just a stab in the dark here.

1414 has some cards I'm interested in too......the R132 airplane cards. I have about 1/2 of the set and could use more if they become available. Not sure what everyone else is looking for so I would defer but the interest is there. I bid on some lots and won some and am a little nervous about all the problems they SEEM to be having and maybe a little more nervous by the fact that no one from their staff is refuting them but the lure of the low price got me. My total's are less than a couple thousand, so I guess in the long run it wouldn't make a HUGE difference as I've lost many multiples of that in our great stock market over the last year but we'll just have to see how all the Mastronet stuff unfolds.

Well, I actually won a lot in this auction (the first since 2006) and now all this talk about maybe losing my money has gotten me a bit on edge as well. I had heard they were having some problems.

Wow! It seems that there were a lot of us who had interest in 1414 and why not. But as Dan and I discussed on the phone the other day this lot seemed to have a theme, but was poorly put together. Nobody (thus far) has expressed interest in any decent slice of the lot...Meaning= None of us could get there from here, thus eliminating everyone but ol dummy here who was going to "take 1 for the team" and somehow hope to recoup at least half of his bid!

Just my 2 cents: if you have complete sets, put them with other sets or let them stand alone..they will bring the money without all of this "buried treasure" "dangling carrot" nonsense.

How about a group of just WS issues?

They had cops and robbers spread out in 3 different lots..but could not make a set?

I used to tell auctioneers at auctions...."you pull that out by itself You got (i will open it /bid) 100.00
Most would jump off their stools.

I am not dealing face to face here so its different. My point is to get what I want without a bunch of other junk i don't need.
I'll pay more than its worth..just don't turn me into Charley the strip card dealer by forcinf=g me to take the nonn related junk.

Enough of my drivel!
I've had this fantasy about Mastro./heritage. Thats it..just a fantasy.

Yes, I received the pages. They are an interesting size; not too big and not too small. I'll send you an e-mail sometime tomorrow as time permits. May I say here, publicly, that I have met many great people through this site and look forward to checking back every morning and every evening. I had a great conversation with Charley yesterday and would have never run across the pages Mark sent me otherwise.

Back to business --> still waiting for the winner of 1414 to step forward, any willing to step up?

RE: wade's post above.

In an email to Mark just yesterday I was noting the "lack of invoice" from mastro too. Now, all of this baseball side mastro thread has me thinking. hmm

need to visit here AND the baseball side more often.

One of my ongoing complaints

No score for this post
March 1 2009, 11:45 AM

about Mastro is that they often lot items in non-baseball card arenas in ways that lump together cards that don't belong or that bury great items in the middle of a lot of mundan stuff. IMO that strategy drives away bidders because a good # cannot afford to pay say $2K for a lot that has perhaps $1k worth of cards they want, even if the rest could be sold. That's why so many dealers end up breaking down and reselling Mastro auction lots a few weeks after the close, which is a hige disservice to the consignors, IMO, since it means a large profit margin was left on the table.

A single PSA 8 Horrors of War card fetched 4,200 w/bp. I believe no pre-war individual baseball card surpassed this, has to be a first.
